Re: Absolutely at my wit's end with web browser busy nonsense

2018-08-15 Thread 'Alex Hall' via MacVisionaries
Christine, you may have said earlier, so forgive the repeat. What's the status
of your hard drive? Specifically, how full is it? If you open Activity Monitor,
how much ram is in use?

In Activity Monitor, interact with the toolbar, then with the tab view radio
group. Choose the memory tab, stop interacting twice, and vo-right to the
table. The processes here should be sorted by highest memory usage, so look at
what the top ones are. If you vo-right past the table, you can find the total
ram, used ram, swap details, and other information that may shed light on the
problem. Thinking back, I seem to recall some similar problems on my 2012 Air
when its drive got really full, but I may be mis-remembering that.

Hi,

I believe that it was mentioned earlier, but, the best way to determine what's
going on here, would be to create a new account on your Mac. If this new
account has the same issues with Safari, then it is something to do with the
processing pwer of your Mac, otherwise, if things seem to work fine in this new
account, then there's a conflict of sorts in the existing account. This is
much faster and easier than a total clean install and will give you a good
answer. To create a new user, go into System Preferences, Users & Groups,
unlock the lock, then press on the Add user button. Once the user has been
created, logout of the current user, log into the new one, then try Safari.

2018-08-14 Thread David Chittenden
Yes, this is one of the reasons I decided to upgrade to the latest Windows
machine rather than a new Mac.

However, my primary reason is: Apple refuses to upgrade the Mac to touchscreen,
and Windows Narrator is now quite useable. It is the only screen reader I am
currently using on my new machine.

All that said, my primary devices are my iPhone X and my iPad Pro 10.5. And, I
will most likely switch back to Mac if Apple ever makes it a touchscreen device.

Oh, and no busy busy problems on my iOS devices.

Kind regards,

Re: Absolutely at my wit's end with web browser busy nonsense

2018-08-14 Thread Jonathan Cohn
To be a little more clear, VoiceOver is a completely separate application from
Mail, Safari, Chrome or other programs. When VoiceOver says “Mail busy” it
means that VoiceOver has asked for something from the other program and after a
reasonable amount of time (perhaps one half a second) VoiceOVer will tell you
it can’t get that information right now by saying Application Name busy.

So all this is saying is that your application is not talking right to
VoiceOver. Sometimes it is because that application is too busy sometimes it is
because the operating system itself is too busy and not giving enough time to
your primary application. Though Sierra Apple made strides to give the
frontmost application more resources.

If your memory on your computer is full, then the computer will try to push
some of that information to the hard disk this is called swapping and
significantly reduces performance. If there is very little space on your hard
disk than swapping can take even longer to perform or might fail. Also web
sites that are constantly updating with new information can cause the browser
to go into busy mode, the web site pushes new information the browser has to
incorporate that information into the screen that is already there and then it
tells VoiceOver hey I have a new layout and it is even possible that VoiceOVer
and the browser might chat a bit to get all the details of the new layout.
Though you might have noticed in El Capitan and newer systems that if you ask
for a list of items on the page it does not immediately say 5000 items, but
instead waits until you type a couple of characters. This can certainly help
with constantly updating pages but there can still be issues.

Hope all this information helps,

Some other possibilities:

1. Use the reader function of the browser (Safari cmd-shift-R).
2. Turn off JavaScript for the browser (this will be in the developer tools.
3. Increase the memory or decrease the number of windows you have open.
4. Make sure you have enough disk space so that the computer can both swap and
rearrange files as necessary. It used to be the rule to have twice as much swap
space as you have memory, and to have 10% of disk free. (Though in BSD Unix,
that 10% used to be taken care of automatically in the fact that the disk was
full when you got to 110% full.

I don’t believe you mentioned any of the specifications of your system. Age,
memory size, memory used OS version these can all effect performance.

I had a att tech guy tell me that att updates its software every once and a

Re: Absolutely at my wit's end with web browser busy nonsense

2018-08-14 Thread Christine Grassman
It happens with Google Chrome as well, and it freezes completely and does not
allow me to do a thing, no matter what I press. It’ll say “VoiceOver off,” but
not “VoiceOver on,” and it will be silent for a long time, or say “busy,” no
matter what I press, though I can almost always get out and can do something
with another application. But as soon as I go back to the web, it freezes until
it is good and ready. Sometimes, this will happen in Mail: busy, freeze, click,
and “VoiceOver on”.

Hi!
Can this maybe help.
If you open vo utilities and go to the category web and change how Voiceover is
handling the web.
THere is something there called navigate web pages with and here we have 2
radiobuttons which are dom or group by object or something like that.
I use a swedish version and its hard to translate but something like that.
I have mine set to dom order wich seems to work great here.

Re: Absolutely at my wit's end with web browser busy nonsense

2018-08-13 Thread CHUCK REICHEL
HI Christine,

Heres what I do once in a while to clear sluggish VO movement & the "busy"
issue, by deleting the Caches folder.

To empty out the Caches folder on your computer, you’ll need to open up Finder
first.

With Voiceover on, you can press V O D, and it should default to Finder. Then
press V O Space.

Once Finder is the focused application, press V O M to get to the menu bar,
then V O Right until you reach the Go menu. In the Go menu, select Go To
Folder.

The location is ~/Library

Once you’ve typed that in, press Return.

In the Library folder, you can select the Caches folder and then press Command
Delete to move it to trash.

I recommend restarting the computer after you do this.

Absolutely at my wit's end with web browser busy nonsense

2018-08-13 Thread Christine Grassman
I have tried everything: cleaning out unnecessary files, doing a disk utility
first aid check, PRAM and SMC, numerous reboots: no matter what web browser I
use, no matter how close to my router I am, no matter what I do, whenever I
perform searches, try to fill anything out, read through headings or other
information, busy becomes a monster and is costing literally taking hours out
of my days to cpmplete the simplest tasks to more involved ones.
Is there a darn thing I can do, and/or is there something visiting the Genius
Bar might accomplish?
Christine
