Yes. In VO settings, on both devices, there is a setting for how you want VO
to indicate Caps. I have mine set to use pitch, so Capital letters are spoken
at a higher pitch. I think the other options are play sound and speak Cap.
That setting is under Accessibility, Voiceover, verbosity.

Thanks donna,

I have my sound effects off so will turn them on till I get comfortable.
But that brings me to hopefully my final issue for today (smile).

Hi KerryAnn,

Re Quicknav, I don’t use it on the Mac, either, but it’s absolutely essential
for working on the iPad. After you press the left and right arrows, you will
know that it’s activated because you will hear a little upward trill. You’ll
hear a downward trill when you deactivate it.

No, not sure why this doesn’t work, but it doesn’t. I press Ctrl up arrow to
jum to the top of the scrreen, and then click the All Inboxes button. Then
arrow over to the message list. Like I said, it works, but it’s less efficient.

 Hi KerryAnn,

If you are thinking your iPad will replace your Mac, I assume you’re
thinking you’ll use it with an external keyboard? Here is a link to some
 info about that:
 https://support.apple.com/guide/ipad/use-voiceover-with-an-apple-external-keyboard-ipad9a246749/ipados

Keep in mind, though, that there’s a fair amount of variation among
different keyboards, so commands and options may vary, depending on your
keyboard. If you are a braille user, I highly recommend the Mantis from
APH as a good qwerty keyboard/display combo. If you prefer Perkins style
input, here is an AppleVis link discussing that:
 https://www.applevis.com/guides/using-braille-display-ios-introduction
I also think that Kliph, who is on this list, has some resources for that,
so hopefully he can respond to your question, too. If none of this
information is what you’re looking for, you might give us more details
about what you are having trouble with.

FWIW, I have both an iPad and a MacBook Air. I love my iPad, and I use it
a lot. But I find the Mac to be far more efficient. I can generally get
things done more quickly and easily on the Mac. Personally, and of course
this is subjective, if I had to choose one or the other, I’d choose the
 Mac.
 Good luck,
 Donna

Re: Advice needed

2022-08-23 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi KerryAnn,

I’m unable to duplicate these issues, at least the mail issues. I’m typing on
my Mantis now, and it is paired with my iPad. Tab and Shift-Tab move through
the message fields. One thing to remember is that when typing in a text field,
you need to have Quicknav on. then, when you want to move around out of that
field, you need to turn Quicknav back off. It’s a little bit of a hassle, but
like I said, the iPad is less efficient than the Mac. By that I mean that it
takes more keystrokes to accomplish a task in many situations. I agree that
navigating to the send button is kind of slippy. That’s one of those instances
where I just reach over and tap that area of the iPad. That will
autoomatically move focus to that area.

I’ve never tried to create an agenda in Pages, so I can’t help you with that.
Best,
Donna

I'll try to explain.

I have an email to send, I go to compose (this is on the ipad).
I cannot navigate around the various areas. I can input the body, but its a
pain to locate the "to filed. If I get that done, editing the subject is
another stres. and then locating the sned button.
I know where all these things are supposed ot be and I'm very good wiht
tech, but the ipad is really driving me crazy.
In pages, I was trying to write an agenda and number the items. I listed
them but I cant seem to navigate by line.
I selected all the items, but when I go to formatting, I can't get the
numbering to work.
Its a series of issues like these that are not functioing in the way I
expect from suing ht emac and hte iphone. I had an ipad eons ago and I
don't recall having these kinds of issues.

Any advice?

Hi KerryAnn,

Mail is definitely one of those things that’s more efficient on the Mac.
Remember that the iPad uses containers, so you’ll have one thing, for example
your message list, in one, and then the currently open message in another.
Honestly, when I’m working in Mail, I often use a combination of the keyboard
and just touching the screen if I want to move quickly from one container to
another.

I hope that helps. If you want to let us know specifically what your problems
are in Mail and Pages, we can probably help you a little better.
Cheers,
Donna

Hi Kerryann,
John, who is on this list, has a terrific site, mac for the blind,
which has entire sections of guides by device and usage, including
some for the Ipad.

Depending on your setup and IOS, you may find many treasures there.

Hi KerryAnn,

If you are thinking your iPad will replace your Mac, I assume you’re thinking
you’ll use it with an external keyboard? Here is a link to some info about
that:
https://support.apple.com/guide/ipad/use-voiceover-with-an-apple-external-keyboard-ipad9a246749/ipados

Keep in mind, though, that there’s a fair amount of variation among different
keyboards, so commands and options may vary, depending on your keyboard. If
you are a braille user, I highly recommend the Mantis from APH as a good qwerty
keyboard/display combo. If you prefer Perkins style input, here is an AppleVis
link discussing that:
https://www.applevis.com/guides/using-braille-display-ios-introduction

I also think that Kliph, who is on this list, has some resources for that, so
hopefully he can respond to your question, too. If none of this information is
what you’re looking for, you might give us more details about what you are
having trouble with.

FWIW, I have both an iPad and a MacBook Air. I love my iPad, and I use it a
lot. But I find the Mac to be far more efficient. I can generally get things
done more quickly and easily on the Mac. Personally, and of course this is
subjective, if I had to choose one or the other, I’d choose the Mac.
Good luck,
Donna

2021-01-24 Thread Kerryann Ifill
Hi all:

I’m seeking some advice. I sent my Mac in for a battery replacement 2 weeks ago
and since its return my internet connectivity seems diminished.

Someone suggested I should reset to factory defaults. Oh I forgot I’m running
Catalina; having read the various issues on here with Big sur, I have decided
to stay away from it.

Any suggestions?

Kerry

Re: Advice needed on creating a utility installer

2009-07-26 Thread Esther

Hi Doug,

If your utility is command-line based, but shell scriptable, you might
be able to wrap it in an Automator workflow. Automator lets you run
shell scripts and AppleScripts as individual actions in the workflow.
There may be better solutions that others can suggest, though.

Cheers,

Esther

Advice needed on creating a utility installer

2009-07-25 Thread Doug Lee

I have a utility, written in Python, that I think a number of blind
Mac Skype users might want to use. The problem is, it's currently
rather complex to install: It requires the Skype4Py module, which can
be had from the Skype Developer Zone web site. It's command-line
based and so tends to require you to start the Terminal to use it. It
is also something I think people will want to have started
automatically, either at boot time or when Skype is launched. The
utility has several features, but perhaps most interesting to most
people here are its ability to make the Mac produce sounds indicating
online statuses of contacts as you arrow through the contact list, and
its provision of some shortcut commands for common tasks, like "pvm"
to read the oldest remaining unplayed voicemail.

Because of the installation complexity problem, the utility is not
really ready for public consumption at this point. However, I welcome
advice on how to create an easy-to-use installation system for this
thing. I'm not sure if it should be a .dmg, a .pkg, or what. I do
want the user to have easy ways to do at least the following though:
Install the utility, update the utility, install and update Skype4Py,
launch the utility, arrange for auto launch of the utility, and remove
the utility and possibly Skype4Py. I'm wondering if a .dmg containing
both the utility and Skype4Py would work, but I don't know how one
makes a .dmg that just installs normally, or one whose application can
be auto-launched.

Thanks for any assistance.
