Hi Karen,

I agree and believe that Apple Accessibility has been notified.  That shouldn't 
stop anyone from adding their voice to the problem though.  Mostly, all that I 
was saying, was that after you know the issue, it's not a big deal of a 
workaround.  I've certainly had much more problematic workarounds to either 
determine, or remedy.

How would a user even know to look there given the label though?  After 
all, as I understand it  the voice quality  on other devices is degrading, 
so  they might think the quality is poor and cannot be fixed.
So, without a clear indicator that activities, which could mean  any 
number 
of things, for example a place to assign voices to certain tasks, actually 
refers to advanced voices, why would anyone check?

its not intuitive until you work in that area. If you have not upgraded

Is that where all voice downloads are located? I have been traveling the last 
two weeks and have avoided upgrading my MBA until my wife has resolved her 
issues with mail indexing that appeared in El Capitan and still plague her in 
High Sierra.

Hi E.T.,

Well, I'll say this, the process is certainly not intuitive, at least, not in 
my opinion.

Were it not for your quick reply to my question, I would never have thought to 
look any further than the voice activity table.  

To be even more honest, I thought that the label, Alex, Compact, was some kind 
of VoiceOver typo.  I had no idea that Alex had a compact version.  (smile)

I made the big plunge and installed High Sierra on my primary partition.
Everything is working well except that Alex sounds a bit strange, kind of.
(smile).

Anyway, upon exploring VoiceOver utility, I noticed that the Alex TTS is
listed as Alex, Compact.  Can this be right?  

If there are now two separate Alex voices, how, then, can I obtain the
non-compact version?
