Re: An accessible place to create my Website
Then probably your best bet is to use a WordPress or Drooble environment. Is the web site mainly going to be content, or are you wanting to sell items or schedule events? So in general the first step is consider all the features you would like the page to do, and then you can start considering candidates. If you are just putting out a place people can find out about your business and maybe download samples of some content, then you can probably get away with just a linux server and some basic HTML though it will not look as nice as some sites unless you can get a designer to manipulate CSS for you. For that matter, I recently heard of a place that had the name coffee in it that was supposed to be a way for people to contribute to artists. I expect such a site will essentially be free, though you won’t have a personal domain and the site itself would take a percentage of your money. RE: An accessible place to create my Website
Hello Ramy, You are most welcome. You've gotten some good advice on this thread. For example, I took a look at Sharons' suggested website hosting company and, at first glance, it might be what you need. The site she posted was http://www.siterightnow.com. You say you simply want a website so that you can showcase your portfolio. May I assume, then, that you have some vision? If this is the case, then you will have more options as some web hosting solutions do not play well with screen readers. Regardless of how you proceed, the first and most important step is to register a domain name. I cannot stress the importance of this, enough. If you want to be taken seriously, on the web, you must have your own domain name. For example, I own about 22 domain names; many of which I am not currently using but which I may use, at some point in the future. Two more points on this: (1) register your domain name for at least 2 years. (2) and this is important, be certain to pay the little extra fee for private registration for those first 2 years. You will not need to renew the private registration when it expires but you definitely need to use it when first reserving a name. Trust me on this. As for the web hosting, itself, since your needs appear to be minimal, you might consider a free solution such as www.wordpress.com. This site, which is actually owned by WordPress, allows one to setup a web site for free, provided the user agrees to allow ads to be displayed. It's not a solution I would use but ... Otherwise, you can do what another list member suggested and search for sites that cater to those wishing to showcase their portfolios. If all else fails, I do trust both TigerTech.comand Web.com as good hosting companies but I cannot speak as to how competitive their rates are, these days. As you conduct your own research, you'll develop a feel for what kind of price point and feature set will work best for you. I strongly suggest that you only consider web hosting companies that offer 24-hour a day free telephone technical support. RE: An accessible place to create my Website
Ryan, You ask a very good question. I suggest using a separate domain registrar because this makes it much easier, down the road, should one choose to change hosting companies. When one registrars a domain name with Network Solutions, one can be certain that no one else has the rights to that domain name. I have seen scenarios where one uses an inclusive domain name registration package only to discover that the hosting company holds the rights to the name and if one wants to keep using it, she/he must stay with that particular hosting company. It is always best to keep certain aspects of website ownership and management as separate as possible from other aspects. There are other top-level registrars available, such as Go Daddy, but the only one I trust and have been using for the past 20 years is Network Solutions. Re: An accessible place to create my Website
Hey there, I think WordPress is the solution you're looking for here. If you plan for your website to just be a static portfolio, meaning you won't be updating it on a consistent basis, WP would have quite a few templates that would suit your needs. If WordPress and all its features are too intimidating, there are numerous portfolio creators on the web where you just enter your desired info and it makes a generic albeit well-presented page. What About SquareSpace? I heard that was the easiest way to build a website. This is good advice. I’m just wondering why he should use Network Solutions for the domain? Most web hosting companies such as Green Geeks or Dream Host include 1 domain in their web hosting plans. RE: An accessible place to create my Website
Hello Ramy, Like so many things on the web, website creation is a highly personal affair. I have no idea as to how you want your website to look or to function; nor do I know how much backend knowledge you already possess. Having said this, were I you, I would consider using WordPress as my website platform on a hosted sight. A lot of people think of WordPress as a blogging tool but it also makes a fabulous dynamic website interface, as well. Here are the three broad strokes you may consider following: 1. Reserve a domain name. If you have already done this, great. If not, then I suggest that you use Network Solutions as your domain registrar. Do not use them for anything other than domain registration as their rates tend to be a bit higher than other web hosting companies. 2. Find a company to host your website. Depending on your needs you can get web hosting for as little as $6 a month or as high as $70 per month. Compare various companies such as web.com, tigertech.com, etc. 3. Either create or install a website interface. All of the major web hosting companies will offer software, at no charge, to install on your account/site. In many cases, this is done by clicking a series of buttons and answering several general questions. This is where you will install WordPress, should you wish to do so. Don't worry, if you don't like it, you can always uninstall it. Finally, be certain to take your time in determining what path you will follow because once you invest time and money into your decision, it can be quite challenging in switching, down the road. Re: An accessible place to create my Website
If you're comfortable setting up a Linux system, you can buy a virtual machine from a provider such as linode.com, install Apache or Nginx, and use your preferred text editor to write the HTML for your web site directly. There are also tools that can generate the HTML for you from Markdown or similar formats that may be easier to edit. If you don't know how to configure a Linux system and how to use the command line, and if you're not in a position to read a book or two, experiment, and learn it - then there may still be accessible solutions around, but I'm not the right person to advise on those.
