Re: Capslock and VMWare Fusion

2019-11-01 Thread kelly ford
Hi,

A bit more of an update here.

My preference when I use JAWS on Windows is to use the laptop layout. As I
said, I originally had mapped a function key to insert. The bluetooth keyboard
I was using had extra function keys so I mapped what showed up as F19.

But my ultimate goal is to use the MacBook’s keyboard directly. There are no
function keys, just the Touch Bar. While I can press function keys using the
Touch Bar, I have no idea how you hold them to also press a second key.

So now what I’ve done is remapped the Accent key (left edge of the numbers) to
be Capslock in Fusion. I then ensure the Windows screen readers are using
Capslock as a modifier.

Then when I want to issue a Windows screen reader command, I just press and
hold the accent key with what ever key I want, such as t for Window title.

I’ve tried this now with JAWS, NVDA and Narrator on the Windows VM while
running VoiceOver on the Mac and so far it is working well. I can control both
screen readers (Windows and Mac) and use just the MacBook’s standard keyboard.

The only customization I had to do in the end was open Fusion preferences,
choose Keyboard and Mouse and then the profile my VMs use and add this one
extra keyboard mapping.

Hi,

I haven’t tried this with Capslock yet but since my end goal was to control a
Windows screen reader, did want to mention one discovery. In VMWare Fusion, I
used the key mappings feature to remap one of the function keys on my Mac to
the Insert key. So now I can press that key and the appropriate Windows screen
reader key with success. I didn’t have to jump through other hoops here.

of a problem and you will need to jump through a number of hoops to make it

is as follows.

1. You need to disable caps lock function on the mac side in system preferences
then keyboard, then press the modifier key options button. In the dialog that
will appear, you can specify what actions various modifier keys can perform on
the mac. These are popup buttons. Caps lock key must be set to no action
because Mac OS doesn’t release caps lock actions to windows installations under
VMWare Fusion as far as I understand.

2. You need to download a utility for mac called Karabiner Elements from the
link below:

https://pqrs.org/osx/karabiner/

This utility once installed will allow you to remap the function caps lock key
to act as an insert key. As you know, mac doesn’t have insert key so you need
to remap it so that caps lock key is recognized as insert key.

Once you install Karabiner Elements, depending on your version of OS, you may
have to grant it permissions in system preferences security & privacy, under
privacy tab.

Also, Karabiner Elements, once installed, will create an icon for itself in
menu extra. That’s how you will always find the app and activate it. Its
window easily disappears once you command + tab away from it so I thought I’d
warn you.

In Karabiner Elements you need to again reassign the function of caps lock key
to insert key. This is relatively straight forward but you will need to do
some exploring. There are basically two popup buttons in a table left column
says something like from key, and right column says something like, to key.
You need to choose from caps lock and in the right column to insert key.

This will be all for Mac OS side.

4. Now once you’ve started Windows in VMWare Fusion, you will need to search
via google for a small utility called sharpkeys.exe by Randyrats, if I
remember. Download it and install it. Once you launch the sharkkeys.exe
application, you will need to again reassign caps lock to insert key and insert
key to caps key. This should do it. I can’t be more helpful on all the steps
of how you’d do this in sharpkeys as I’m not able to look at it while typing
this message but you probably have enough experience to work it out after
you’ve explored sharkeys windows. Basically sharkeys will change reassignment
of caps lock key and insert key in Windows registry. You will need to restart
your Windows for the reassignment to take effect. I don’t know exactly why you
need to reassign caps to insert and then again insertt to caps but when I did
only the former, it didn’t work. It only worked for me when I did the insert
to caps reassignment as well. Of course you need to tell Jaws to use capslock
key as Jaws key.

Hope this will help, and please anyone chip in if I have made a mistake in the
above or omitted anything.

Kelly,

It’s annoying problem, and I guess it’s been around for a while. I did some
research after getting your e-mail, and what I’m seeing so far is that, in
VMware Fusion, you have to go to Virtual Machine > Send key > Caps Lock, and
when you press it once my screen reader (JAWS) does say Caps lock on. I tried
it, and it does work, but then it seems like Caps lock on the Mac and Caps lock
on the VM are no longer in sync. I’ll try doing more research today if I get
time and will report back.
