Redirect is like a forward but instead of encapsulating the message in a new
message the redirect-to: and redirect-from mail headers are added. This is not
used much these days, but would be useful for example if you wanted to forward
all messages from John Smith from your personal e-mail to your work e-mail. A
significant advantage of redirecting is that reply will still work correctly.

I’m wondering the difference between move and redirect.

I think I’ll delete the rule I created and start over. The first go round, did
help me clean up my inbox, which was greatly needed. ;)

Maybe creating a new rule with an empty inbox will make the difference.
Otherwise, I’ll just log onto gMail on the web.

2017-03-13 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Are you making the rules on your macintosh, or on the Gmail site?

I don't think there is a "skip inbox" function on the Macintosh rules, but
I haven't played with them lately. The Macintosh mail rules have a copy and
move function. So the move function would be like the Google's skip inbox.

Most likely what is happening is that the Macintosh rules only run on
unread e-mails when Mail is retrieving messages. So if you first read a
message on your IOS device and than it gets retrieved by the Mac the rule
does not run.

Re: Creating email folders and labels

2017-03-10 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi, as far as I know I have done things correctly, but the rules aren’t
automatically running. I came across a groupon email in my inbox and hit run
rule, then it moved to my deals folder, but it didn’t do it without my input.

Do you think I need to add a rule to skip inbox? What I have is a list of
addresses to move into deals folder. Since sales emails sometimes use
different email addresses, I set it up from contains groupon.com
. Another example is from contains propellants.com. I
went to the original emails to make sure I had the letters in the URL correct.

What are your thoughts? In the mean time, I’m going to look at the rule
options again.

Thanks,

If you create a folder under your Gmail account on Macintosh Mail, and you
are using the IMAP protocol to retrieve e-mails then this will create a
label on the web page.

Let me know if you need more details.
