Re: Sudden battery Drain on Iphone Xr.

2020-02-11 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Have you restarted your iPhone? A couple things to note. Battery Optimization
is a software check that monitors your normal charging behaviour and determines
when to charge it to 100% not long before you'd normally start using it. For
example, if you plugged your iPhone in before bed, and you normally awake at
6:00 am, the iPhone will charge to about 80% in the first one to two hours,
then turn off the charging process until about an hour before you wake in order
to complete the charge to 100%. Turning it off can sometimes hurt battery
health. Yes, I have heard some mention that turning it off improves how long
the iPhone retains a charge, but I believe that this is no longer the case.
Your battery gets the equivalent of about 500 charge cycles of life. No matter
if you charge it to 50% 1000 times, or to 100% 500 times. Losing 17% from noon
to 7:40 is not really that bad. At that rate, you would get approximately 48
hours on a full charge. Any time you can get two full days out of a phone
battery in normal use cases is excellent.

Later...

Hi,

Note that these instructions only affect conversations on the Messages app on
your Mac. Muting a conversation on the Mac does not mute the same conversation
on your iOS device. They are independent, even though they are linked in other
ways.

Once in the messages app move over to the list of messages since it is the only
table on the aap screen, I usually use control-option-command-shift-T.
Now interact with that table.
Find the muted conversation and use control-option-shift-M to bring up the
contextual menu and you should find "Do not disturb" checked. Uncheck the item
and the conversation should now be unmuted.
Note, it might be possible to mute a person in the contacts application.

do myself. Now I can not use 85% to 90% of the iPhone. So, where is

Hi,

If you used an app like type two phone, you might be able to use the Mac
keyboard to do those sorts of commands. Otherwise, I suggest that you acquire a
Bluetooth keyboard for your iPhone.

Re: Chargin Iphone Xr.

2019-03-21 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Agreed. It could be charged twice a day if that's what is needed. It's kind
of a cycle thing, not a number of charges thing. For example if you charge it
from 30 to 70% one day, and from 20 to 80% the next day, then you've charged it
one cycle. That is, you charged it 40% the first day, and 60% the next day,
which adds up to 100%, one cycle. Phone batteries have a optimum number of
cycles and once it reaches that point, battery life is not particularly useful.
Aslo, unless theres' something wrong with your device, there are controls
within that reduce the amperage so that the phones do not over charge. So,
basically, you should be fine. In Settings, Battery, there's a way for you to
check how well your battery is doing. If it's at 100% in there, then your
battery is like new. If it's at 80%, then it
s still fine. If it's at 30%, then it's near the point of needing replaced as
it is only able to do 30% as good as a brand new battery.

There's probably more technical explanations, but that hopefully helps.

Chargin Iphone Xr.

2019-03-21 Thread Anders Holmberg
HI!
As i want to take very good care of this new Iphone XR i am not really sure on
how to charge or when to charge the Iphone?
Normally i sued to charge my other Iphones every day but is that really good
for the battery?
I am really unsure about this and i don’t want to destroy the battery on the
Iphone.
I know there are tons of info on this thread on the web but who is right and
not right?
So i am curious on how you all do about this?
I think it will take a lot to destroy the battery on the Iphone but you never
know.
Blessings from Sweden.

Re: thoughts on iPhone XR?

2019-03-04 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Actually, I've decided to sit tight. I'm really worried that I won't like the
size. I have smaller hands, and even the X is a little big for my taste. I'd
love the S, but I don't love its price-tag. So, I think I'll see what next
year's phone lineup looks like.
Cheers,

RE: thoughts on iPhone XR?

2019-03-03 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Donna and Anders,

Yeah I believe that the XR is a size between the XS and XS Max,
But the screen and camera are the big difference, For the price they've
offered you Donna I'd say go for it

I guess to someone with average male sized hands the size isn't bad,
But it's all an individuals view on things.

Good luck with your choice.

Hi!
Well, so far i do like it more than my old Android phone.
BUt yeah i wish it could been smaller.
I sometimes have problems unlocking the phone with faceId as its to fast.
They say this beast is having good battery power and yes it has but it could be
a lot better i think in regards to how big it is and the Lcd display.
But i am no engineering so what do i know?
Its a hole lot better than my Iphone Se though.
There is no stereo speaker which from my perspective is not a problem but you
should be aware of that if you’re getting used to that.
But the sound of VoiceOver is really great even though i think it sounds a bit
boxy or something like that.
You’re always welcome to ask questions about it if you have any.

I heard the top speaker is made the left or right speaker in landscape mode.
But you do get decent separation in portrait mode as well.

Re: thoughts on iPhone XR?

2019-03-03 Thread John JD Denning
The EXR does indeed have stereo speakers. They work just fine. Though I seldom
listen to stereo music from the speakers it does work. Really the differences
are the camera in the screen. And I can’t see the difference in the screen
between my EXR and my wife’s ex S.

Thanks, Anders. That's strange about it not having a stereo speaker. I'm glad
you mentioned it, I just assumed that would come on all the phones. I have
sort of gotten used to it, guess I'll have to think about how much that matters.

Thanks for responding.

But i am no engineering so what do i know?
Its a hole lot better than my Iphone Se though.
There is no stereo speaker which from my perspective is not a problem but you

But the sound of VoiceOver is really great even though i think it sounds a bit

I have a friend who has the iPhone eggs are, and when he showed me, I didn’t

which I have. I’m not sure what the phone is if it’s a eight or 10 r or

I like my XR quite a bit. It’s only a little bigger than the X, and yet, way
more comfortable to hold than my 7 plus was. Face ID is a bit finicky, but when
it works, it’s really very elegant!

Hey Simon,

I like being on the second phone of the cycle, because that's the phone that
gets the faster processor. And, I'm thinking that if I trade in my X and
upgrade now, it'll still be cheaper than buying a new model next fall.
Cheers,
Donna

Hi Donna,

I've also got the X and even though the xs and xr sound like great phones, I
couldn't see any reason for now to update,
So I'm waiting to see what the next version brings.

Hi all,

I know that some of you out there have the iPhone XR. How do you like it?
Anything you don't like?

I had planned to skip upgrading this year, but I just got an offer from Apple
to buy an XR for $249 if I trade in my iPhone X. It's tempting. And it'd be a
lot cheaper than whatever upgrading when next fall's phones come out will be,
so I'm kind of thinking about it.

One specific thing I'm curious about is the improved face ID. I don't like it
on the X, but have read that it is faster on the newer phones. Does anyone
have experience with this? Also, how is the feel? I've read that it's wider,
and that's something I don't really need.
TIA,
Donna

Re: thoughts on iPhone XR?

2019-03-02 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi Mary,

Thanks! This is helpful.

As it turns out, the Apple promo won't be good for me b/c I'd still have to pay
off my VZ balance on the X. But, it does look like trading in my X might be
advantageous, so I'm exploring that.

I went to the VZ store today to look at the phones. I do like the smaller
size of the S, but completely agree with you that it isn't worth the higher
price tag. So if I do go through with this, it'll be an R.

Thanks again for sharing your experience.
Cheers,
Donna

Hi Donna,
I do have the XR, and I do like it. I especially like the great battery life. I
can’t see any big deal about getting the 10 S or the max except cost. Not worth
it. If you use 3D Touch a lot, then that could be important. But since I don’t,
there was no downside for me I came from a 7+, which is a larger phone of
course. The hardest thing to get used to it for me is the bezels or lack there
of. But with your 10, you are already used to that. I can’t compare the older
face ID with the newer one, since I have no experience with the old one. I
don’t have any problem with it, and it is pretty fast. I still prefer touch ID,
but this does work. So I would say go for it.

thanks, John. the size is one of the things that worries me - I like the
smaller phones. :) May have to go to Verizon and see just how much bigger it
actually is. I'd probably rather have the S, but I do like this price a lot
better.

Re: thoughts on iPhone XR?

2019-03-02 Thread John JD Denning
Hi, I have the XR, and love it. I love the face ID. It’s very fast, and very
convenient. I like the size of the phone I like everything about it. Can’t
think of any drawbacks whatsoever. My wife has the 10 S, and it’s just smaller
than I like. Hig

thoughts on iPhone XR?

2019-03-02 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries

TIA,
Donna

Re: Problems with Logitech K380 Bluetooth keyboard and iPhone XR

2019-02-14 Thread Michael Busboom
Thanks for all the feedback, everyone; it really helped.

If I ever discover a way to reconfigure the keyboard in such a way that truly
gives me the feeling of an iOS keyboard experience, i.e. Command Key right next
to the spacebar, and Option to the left of that, I will share that nugget with
the list.

My thanks to you for your input,

Mike

If the keyboard fails to correctly detect the operating system of a device, you
can manually select the operating system by performing a long press (3 seconds)
of a function key combination.
Makes me want to purchase one of these keyboard!

RE: Problems with Logitech K380 Bluetooth keyboard and iPhone XR

2019-02-13 Thread Simon Fogarty
Mike,

The power switch is on the left hand edge near the top,
This needs to be pushed UP to be on,

Then once on press the f1 or f2 or f3 key to turn your Bluetooth option on,
note the f1 f2 etc keys are second third and forth keys in from the left end of
the top row, the most top left key is escape or home.

So once the board is on press and hold down the f key you want to use
Hold it down for approx. 3 seconds and key watching your Bluetooth devices on
your device
If the device is an IOS device like iPhone
Then under Bluetooth the k380 will show up to the very right of the Bluetooth
connected devices.

Thank you very much for your feedback, Simon. I tried associating my iPhone
with all three possibilities, but the keyboard layout remained the same. It’s a
pain using it this way, but I guess I will just have to live with it.

Take care and thanks.

RE: Problems with Logitech K380 Bluetooth keyboard and iPhone XR

2019-02-13 Thread Simon Fogarty
Yes on the lowest row of keys you have from left to right:
Ctrl, function (fn), Command Key, Option, space Bar,
No the keys don't change if you press the function keys, f1 f2 etc.

If you press the Fn key with f1 or f2 f3 etc then you get different things with
the f1 etc keys happening.

If you use option and some keys give you different commands to ctrl key and the
same key as before command key and f gives a search in some apps is different
to ctrl f or option f.

If your using voice over then try pressing ctrl and option and k to get the the
keyboard help which will let you press all kinds of key combinations to find
out what things do what.

I am wondering if the keyboard layout is different, depending if F1, F2 or F3
is initially pressed. Currently, Option is closest to the spacebar, Control is
the furthest from the spacebar, and Command is one of the two remaining. I
hope that I can change this somehow. This keyboard is otherwise really nice,
and it goes forever on two triple-A batteries.

Re: Setting up Iphone XR.

2019-02-12 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Setting up Face ID is quite easy from a VO prospective. If you were not able
in the initial set up screens, you can do this under the Face ID section in
Settings. With VO on, you will be guided through the steps with audio
assistance and the Attention aspect of things whereby eye contact is needed
will automatically be disabled. Basically, you will face the screen, then turn
slightly right or left and do an eight point recognition cycle where the iPhone
takes note at the bottom left/centre/right, top left/centre/right and mid left
and right. Once all those points have been sufficiently noted,, Face ID is
ready to use.

You will still need the pass-code every once in a while, as in after an iPhone
restart etc.BTW, there is the ability to change the Pass-code to a four digit
or more complicated. I don't recommend a four digit code as it is not
particularly secure, but it is doable.

Re: Problems with Logitech K380 Bluetooth keyboard and iPhone XR

2019-02-12 Thread Michael Busboom
Thank you very much for your feedback, Simon. I tried associating my iPhone
with all three possibilities, but the keyboard layout remained the same. It’s a
pain using it this way, but I guess I will just have to live with it.

Take care and thanks.

Re: Problems with Logitech K380 Bluetooth keyboard and iPhone XR

2019-02-12 Thread Michael Busboom
I am wondering if the keyboard layout is different, depending if F1, F2 or F3
is initially pressed. Currently, Option is closest to the spacebar, Control is
the furthest from the spacebar, and Command is one of the two remaining. I
hope that I can change this somehow. This keyboard is otherwise really nice,
and it goes forever on two triple-A batteries.

Hi Anders,
Now I’m no expert but I have a couple of thoughts. Have you held the XR above
the iPad with the back camera of the iPhone facing the iPad? Once the process
starts then you can lay the two devices next to each other. At least that is
how I remember doing it when I upgraded from my 5s to my 8+. But I could be
remembering wrong.
And is the iPad running the latest IOS?

RE: Problems with Logitech K380 Bluetooth keyboard and iPhone XR

2019-02-12 Thread Simon Fogarty
Yeah I have this same board.

The f1 f2 and f3 keys all allow you to pair with a different device.

I've got my iPhone on f3
Windows computer on f1 and mac book on F2

I did notice when first pairing with my phone that the keys from the bottom
left corner to the space bar worked this way:

Ctrl fn, option and nothing,

On windows it went,
Ctrl, fn, windows key and then alt / option

On the mac book:
Ctrl, Fn, Command & Option.

So something in the IOS version on my phone appears to be screwed up.

As for pairing your devices,

Just hold down the F1 F2 F3 keys one device at a time for approx. 5 seconds
than then see if it shows in your devices available Bluetooth devices for
pairing.
Hope that helps.

Hello.

For quite some time now, I have happily been using a Logitech k380 keyboard
with various iPhones. Yesterday, however, when installing new batteries,
something went wrong.

Basically, the keys for Command, Option and Control were switched around. While
this isn’t necessarily a showstopper, I am wondering if there is a way to
reassign the keys differently. There is also apparently a way to use the same
keyboard with several different devices, though I haven’t quite figured out how
this is accomplished. Any thoughts or pointers to a manual for this keyboard
would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Re: Setting up Iphone XR.

2019-02-11 Thread Petrus Tuerlings
Hi Anders,
Now I’m no expert but I have a couple of thoughts. Have you held the XR above
the iPad with the back camera of the iPhone facing the iPad? Once the process
starts then you can lay the two devices next to each other. At least that is
how I remember doing it when I upgraded from my 5s to my 8+. But I could be
remembering wrong.
And is the iPad running the latest IOS?

Setting up Iphone XR.

2019-02-11 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
Since i have both an Ipad mini 4 and Iphone XR I try to make the Ipad mini to
quick setup my Iphone.
However it does not seem to work.
It says that i should put them beside each other and i do that with no luck.

Problems with Logitech K380 Bluetooth keyboard and iPhone XR

2019-02-11 Thread Michael Busboom

Mike

Re: Iphone XR some questions before i start.

2019-02-03 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries
Yes, pressing the power button three times quickly (it's now referred to
by Apple as the "side button") should start VoiceOver.

To reach the Home Screen, slide one finger up from the very bottom of
the screen until the second beep is heard. (There should be a slight
vibration as well.)

For App Switcher, it's the same gesture, but continuing further up the
screen until the third tone.

Searching for iPhone X discussion should reveal anything on Applevis.com
or elsewhere that is relevant.

What Reviewers Are Saying About the New Apple iPhone XR
By David Marino-Nachison

When Apple 's (ticker: APPL) first two new iPhones-the XS and XS Max-came
out, many reviewers suggested that shoppers wait a few weeks until the
slightly less-expensive XR came out.
"Good news, Apple loyalists: You won't have to burn $1,000 on your next
iPhone," Brian X. Chen wrote for the New York Times. "That's because for
about $750, you can have the iPhone XR, which is just as fast and nearly as
capable as its more expensive counterparts. The cheaper iPhone, which
becomes available this Friday, is the model that most people should buy."
We already rounded up reviews of the first phones. Here's a selection of
highlights from reviews of the newest one.
. First off: What's the difference? Edward Baig collected some of the
distinctions, including different screen technology and some cosmetic
changes, for USA Today. There's also screen size:
The XR, he wrote, "has a display size of 6.1 inches, putting it in between
the XS screen (5.8 inches) and the XS Max (6.5 inches). Accordingly, the
phone is slightly larger than the XS and slightly smaller than the XS Max."
. Nilay Patel, writing for the Verge, went pretty deep on what the screen
technology differences really mean to users.
"The iPhone XR LCD definitely shifts a little pink and drops brightness
quickly when you look at it off-axis, which often leads to a bit of a
shimmery effect when you move the phone around," Patel wrote. "I noticed
that shimmer right away, but I had to point it out to other people for them
to see it. (It's one of those things you might not notice at first, but you
can't un-see it.)"
. Power users of phone cameras may wish they had the more expensive models,
according to The Wall Street Journal's Joanna Stern.
"The XR has the same great wide-angle camera as the XS phones, but lacks the
second telephoto lens for true optical zoom..With just one camera, Apple
still enables Portrait Mode-the setting that tries to mimic SLR cameras by
applying artificial blur around a subject. Instead of using the two cameras,
Apple uses software tricks to try to distinguish the main subject from the
background," Stern wrote.
"As crazy as it seems, this is actually a deal breaker for me, as I snap
tons of photos of my son and dog together. (I did confirm, however, that the
front-facing selfie camera will work for those animal portrait shots.) On
the plus side, portrait shots in low light on the XR were better than on the
XS since the wide-angle camera lets in more light," according to Stern.
. And the phone doesn't share a touch feature with its more expensive
siblings, noted Scott Stein for CNET.
"The iPhone XR doesn't have the pressure-sensitive 3-D Touch feature that
lets you do things like preview links, messages and files before opening
them, as the iPhones 6S, 7, 8, X and XS series do," he wrote. "In its place,
the iPhone XR gives little pulses of vibration feedback-called 'haptics'-for
the lock screen camera and flashlight icons. Instead of pressing down,
holding a finger on them will open them. Same for the Control Center's
deeper controls. It kinda feels the same as 3-D Touch."
. The XR may be the least expensive of the phones, Chris Velazco wrote for
Engaget, but that doesn't mean it's "cheap."
"The XR is a little wider, thicker and taller than the XS, but it never
feels unwieldy," he wrote. "In fact, since it in sits in a nice little sweet
spot between the XS and the massive Max, the XR arguably offers the best
blend of size and usability. Build quality is up to Apple's usual standards,
which is to say it's impeccable. The iPhone XR may cost less than the phones
I reviewed a month ago, but it doesn't feel like it."
. If you care about phone colors, read Raymond Wong's review for Mashable.
"I've been using the yellow iPhone XR for a week, and oooh, is it gorgeous,"
he wrote. "Besides pairing well with my yellow sunglasses, the color just
makes me happy. Imagine that: In 2018, when phone anxiety is real and tech
companies are inventing new ways to make us use our phones less, a gadget's
brightly colored paint job actually puts me at ease. The five other colors
the iPhone XR comes in are just as fun. I have a soft spot for the coral
after yellow."
. From a buyers' perspective, Lauren Goode's take for Wired seems to sum up
what many reviewers think about how to choose between the three new iPhones.

"The iPhone XR is not the most technologically advanced iPhone; many of
Apple's superior components have been reserved for the costlier device," she
wrote. "But the iPhone XR is still a moderately great phone. It's great not
in the way that super-futuristic,

Hourly chime on iPhone XR

2018-10-27 Thread Angus MacKinnon
I will save my 6 Hour Tech Gremlin at the Apple Store story. I have a brand new
Black iPhone that I enjoyed setting up and customizing. I was wondering if it
is possible to have the iPhone XR chime on the hour? Or do I need to export my
Westminster Chimes App to the iPhone XR? Thank you.
