Re: Printer/Scanner

Can I mess up your printer? Heh. Actually I cannot think of a good
reason for me to send a job to my printer remotely, but ar home over
wifi, yes. And I will give it a go.

Re: Printer/Scanner

2019-03-02 Thread 'E.T.' via MacVisionaries

Janina,
I should have read all new mail. Usually I do. (smiles) While adding
my Epson in Windows, it brought up a list of almost 400 models. Good
grief. And my model was not included. Solved that with a driver
installation. The Mac was much easier.

I think now that the printer is connected to the router I should try
sending print jobs from my iPhone. Just in case I need to print text
messages or emails for Judge Judy. She loves that. :)

I will be looking at these printers and decide what I want and save
pennies. Appreciate your input.

Here's what I know from personal experience about HP. They build lots of
printers, many models. Some of them are wonderful. Others are dogs.

Moral of the story is that I cannot swear that every Brother model will
be accessible, so protect your ability to return for a refund--just in
case, even if there's some kind of restocking fee.

I hear you about limited funds. I've been there, my friend!

I can tell you that I can access all configuration functions on my printer via
browser, even an ancient
browser like Lynx. However, I have been unable to get scanning to work
via the network connection, though I haven't tried very hard because I
have another scanner closer to where I sit in my office. The printer is
where my sighted assistant sits when she's here.

I expect that connecting to the device via USB would make scanning
trivial, but I particularly want it network connected as I sometimes
send print jobs to it from afar. I particularly like that it supports IPv6,
because that makes it easy for me to access it securely from afar. You may not
be
into IPv6 yet. However, rather than define NAT for it, should you have
this need, I would suggest checking out IPv6 instead. Apple, Microsoft,
Linux, Android all support it very well these days, so it's only a
question of whether you can get IPv6 from your Internet service
provider.

My model was classified as a "small workgroup multi function device." In
the early days of owning it, the default drivers didn't work with it,
but the driver for the next, slightly larger Brother worked just fine,
including for printing graphics. That issue has been fixed for some time
now, though.

Re: Printer/Scanner

2019-03-02 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
BT will only work in the printer's environs.

Mine is connected via ethernet cable to my router. My router also serves
as my wireless access point (WAP) for wifi in my home.

Result: I can access my printer anywhere in my home, even beyond where
BT would work.

Also, I can access my printer from across the planet, should I so
choose.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for a much for her learning me to the HP Smart application. I just
installed it on my iPhone. I gave it access to my dropbox folder. I think it’s
really going to be great to print documents from HP Smart. I think I may have
lucked out on this one. I would agree with you that this is the nicest printer
I’ve ever owned.

Hi Bill,
I've had many problems with wifi printers over the years. What I just
purchased was an HP Laser Jet Pro 281FDW all-in-one color laser
printer. I plugged it into my router, brought up system prefs and hit
add new printer. Wallah, I now have a networked printer that works
from mac os, windows and IOS. And it was the easiest printer I've ever
set up.
One last note the model I mentioned is quite pricey but HP does make

My HP printer has its own WIFi hotspot showing up in the network choices. I am
not positive, but I believe I was able to use a connection to the printer with
this SSID to do initial configuration.

2019-02-27 Thread 'Bill Gallik' via MacVisionaries
Hmmm, the fact that initial set-up for a Wi-Fi printer is not accessible is not
so much an issue so much as what happens to the configuration after a power
outage. If I need to ask a friend for help setting up a printer the first time
- well, that’s is not such a big deal. But if the set-up needs to be done each
time the printer loses power; well, that’s an entirely different kettle of
fish. And, may I add, such a situation would exude about the same smell as a
week old kettle of fish!

Can anybody hear advise that the set-up is in non-volatile memory?

Fax? Who uses fax anymore! Mine isn't hooked up, but the machine
does support fax. It's all the same technology after all.

PS: Mine is the model 9840DW. I got it from Newegg about 10 years ago as
an open box resale for $150. In the early days I had some issues with
Linux drivers, but no longer. I've never had issues on Macintosh or
Windows with this machine, and it works with my Android just as well.
It's a network printer, so I share it out on my network via my OpenWRT
router.

Best,

Re: Printer/Scanner

2019-02-26 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Yours truly is on her second Brother multi function device in the last
decade plus. Should my current printer/copier/scanner/fax die, I'm quite
certain I'll just get another Brother.

It's a network printer, so I share it out on my network via my OpenWRT
router.

Best,

Janina

Printer/scanner/copier recommendations

Yes, I do seem to spend more time cleaing the nozzle than anything else.

I have no experience at all of laser printers, is the toner difficult to

Re: Printer/Scanner/Copier recommendations

2018-11-15 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I don’t know the relative costs of things, but Ink Jet printers do better when
they are used fairly regularly. Since the ink is liquid but needs to be fast
drying I understand that it can clog the printhead and/or dry out if not used
regularly. With a laser printer, the toner is a powder that sticks to the drum
and then is sealed with heat, so there is no ink to dry out. Also, although my
HP system has a fairly extensive touch panel, most of those functions can also
be done via a web connection or the print driver when downloaded from Apple. I
get alerts on my computer when the ink is low in our family printer even if
another family member is printing. I expect the same is also true of other
vendors, but I do not have any experience with them.

Printer/Scanner/Copier recommendations

2018-11-15 Thread 'Adrienne Chalmers' via MacVisionaries
Hi

I have a relatively elderly Epson XP series 20 something or other. I tend to
use the scan/copy function more often than printing. Occasionally I need to
print mailing labels and this seems to be getting increasingly difficult.

I can’t see at all, so I suppose touch screen controls won’t be much use to me.
I also have bother with my hands, so the less fiddly the ink cartridge, the
better.

I don’t think a laser printer is justified because of the low volume of
printing I do, but am happy to be corrected on this.

BTW, I have an iMac and an MBP, both on Mohave and I have the printer attached
to a Time Capsule, although I’m sure Airprint would be preferrable.

All recommendations gratefully received.

Best

If you’re still using one, which Model number do you think is best these days?

All in one printer/scanner/copier

2015-10-31 Thread Jim Gatteys
Hi all!
I guess the subject says it all but I am in the market for a new black and
white laser printer and was wondering about getting one of those all in one
printer/scanner/copier beasts. My scanner is 15 years old it is an epson 1660
and I just wondered if anybody had experience with one of these all in ones.
Also, what about accessibility with mac drivers? I guess wireless would be
nice so it would work from either mac or iPhone.
I'd appreciate any info or experience out there.

Re: All in one printer/scanner/copier

2015-10-31 Thread Scott Berry
Hi Jim,

I suggest that you may want to go with the Epson printers. They now have one
which handles ink cartridges for two years. I have a Workforce 2530 and once
you learn the buttons it’s not bad but entering in the wireless you almost need
someone sighted. I am uncertain what printers are really easy to use. I have
a friend in Minnesota I’ll ask him if he is not on here and see what he
recommends.
