Yeah Donna,

My Rhaspberry pi 3 is going to be used for security cameras aroud my house,

And the simple thing is they are just USB web cameras to the pi with an OS
called Motion eye OS which lets you setup all the features you need

Very cool and for next to no cost.

Hi Donna, you can do a lot with them. People run phone servers, bitcoin
mining, cameras, media centers, video game consoles, and a host of other
things. They make great micro controllers do to the I/o bus and you can even
parallelize them. Someone built a 98 member Bayo Wolf super computing cluster
with a pile of pis and some small ethernet switches.

You can run speak up on them as well as the Orka screen reader with a USB sound
dongle. You can also access them remotely via ssh and use the accessibility
tools on your native machine.

The Mac is great working with these small devices because of the Unix
filesystem under the hood. You can drop to terminal and build your cards and
work with the files with out needing to install extra software.

Good stuff.

Re: OT: Re: Adventures with Raspberry Pi

2017-03-10 Thread Scott Granados
Hi Donna,

Raspberry pi (pi as in the ratio of the circumference to radius of a circle and
all that), is what we’re talking about. A raspberry pi is a small, credit card
sized PC on a board that you can program yourself. It uses a micro SD card for
file storage / disk and includes 1GB of memory, a quad core ARM processor,
video processor, WiFi, Bluetooth, Audio, 4USB and an ethernet port. In the
case I have for it the whole thing is about as big as a deck of cards. I have
a full featured phone system and fax server on mine. They also include a 40
pin I/O port that you can break out for other devices like serial lines,
printers, extra fans, and so on and so forth. Cost is about $35 for a pie and
you can get in to full kits for $70 or so on Amazon.

There is a good list already that’s raspberry...@freelists.org

And there’s the raspberry-vi.org site which is a good starter. I’ll answer
some of the questions here and if the mods want this to go away I’ll happily
comply.

Re: Adventures with Raspberry Pi

2017-03-10 Thread Alex Hall
I'm very interested. I've had one for months, but each time I try to load the
OS, I do something wrong. More than that, I don't know how to pre-configure my
network details on the Pi so I can SSH into it after boot, which is the only
way I'll be doing anything on it.

RE: Adventures with Raspberry Pi

2017-03-10 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Scott,

I'm actually about to start using one

I've been looking at setting up a security camera or 3 around my place and this
was given to me as an option which was cheap and useable.

So I got the PI 3 and have downloaded the motion eye os which is the security
cam OS version and have installed it to the sd card now I just have to
configure it.
I'm going to have to use the command line as the web interface is really badly
done
But yeah I might be up to listening

Is there any interest in a review of and a little discussion around raspberry
Pis? I’m using one now which I set up entirely with out assistance using my
Mac and I can make the post Mac centric if there’s interest. To be clear
though it is a non apple product and in terms of the topic of this list
probably skirts the edges but if the moderators are willing and there’s
interest I’d be happy to post here. If not I’m happy to close the thread if
there’s objection.

Thanks

2017-03-09 Thread Pete Nalda
Jfyi there *is a Rasphberry-VI group, but that being said, I have a Pi-top I
was given that I need to find someone to help me put together. I've used
Debian' s universal access in class, for zooming, not sure how the screenreader
works, and even if raspberrian includes universal access.
