Re: Apple Ceases Development of 'AirPort' Wireless Routers as Engineers Reassigned to Other Products - Mac Rumors

2016-11-23 Thread Jonathan Cohn
If they are providing this as an Xcode sample, then there is a good chance that
any developer could incorporate it into their IOS tools.

I still have my V1 Apple AirPort Station that looks like a flying saucer. It
was very simple, a phone line connector a Ethernet connector and a power jack.
Yes, it had a 56K modem built in. I bought it with a Tangerine Orange Apple
laptop that you had to pay extra to get a wireless card in.

Best wishes,

Jonathan

2016-11-22 Thread Barry Hadder
You can enable apt-x on macOS with the bluetooth explorer tool. It is on the
Apple developer site as part of the io tools for xcode package so you migh need
to create a free acount to download it. And no you don't need xcode to use it.
I don't know of a way to enable it on IOS though, but I doubt anyones is
storing lossless audio on their iDevices yet..

2016-11-22 Thread Scott Granados
Look at the Nighthawk series especially the X10-7200AD model. Stay away from
links’s, they don’t forward very well, TP Link also has a few good models one
that supports AD networking. Not much supports AD yet so that’s a gamble and
that speed is only good in room but the rest of the protocols are supported
very well on these higher end models which is why I suggest them. I doubt you
have any AD clients but you may in the next year or so.

Re: Apple Ceases Development of 'AirPort' Wireless Routers as Engineers Reassigned to Other Products - Mac Rumors

2016-11-22 Thread Scott Granados
Jessica, the thing is the Apple routers were good but they aren’t great and for
the money they should be great. The part of them that is great is the access
point side. They have held up well on the wireless side but I haven’t used
their routing functions for years now. They don’t have the forwarding rate to
support the modern high end connections, they don’t have the advanced routing
features and while they can add a drive for time machine I can do that for a
fraction of the price with most routers today or with network attached storage
like the Seagate MyCloud boxes. They just aren’t a compelling product any
more. They could continue innovating and updating the router but why? Cisco,
Dlink, TPLink, Netgear, Buffalo, and on and on are all doing this better and
cheaper along with the fact most network providers include a router with their
service now. I agree with Eric, it just ain’t worth the scratch Apple wants
you to spend. Put the engineers and development effort in to better WiFi
clients in the laptops and phones etc and let the router guys do what they do.

Re: Apple Ceases Development of 'AirPort' Wireless Routers as Engineers Reassigned to Other Products - Mac Rumors

2016-11-22 Thread Erik Burggraaf
Just my two centts worth, I'm sure this wasn't a snap decision. I don't
think apple makes many of those no matter who the CEO is.

Apple routers aren't just expensive, they're out of site expensive. The
hardware is nice, but nothing you can't get in a router for 1/3 of the
price. Similarly, hard drives capable of time machine can be had for a
fraction of the price of the extreme.

In terms of software, you are OK as long as you only want to set up apple
devices. You're in trouble if you need to set up airport using windows for
any reason, or if you want to connect non bonjour printers or other
unsupported perripherals. Non-proprietary, standards capable routers from
linksys, d-link, and TP-Link do a much more universally accessible, less
proprietary job for between 30 and 50 bucks a shot.

I loved my mac and my IPod, but I'm not such an apple fanboy that I'm
willing to waste money. Some of apple's stuff is just not worth it. The
usb super-multi drive is one such, also the bluetooth keyboard, and the
routers.

Best,

Erik

Re: Apple Ceases Development of 'AirPort' Wireless Routers as Engineers Reassigned to Other Products - Mac Rumors

2016-11-21 Thread Scott Granados
Everything is going to go to a WiFi standard I suspect. With AD coming out for
high speed in room access and AC becoming pervasive it makes sense to handle
everything natively over WiFi. You can also prioritize each class of data
nicely.

Bluetooth won’t be the spec, it’s to short range. Only 10 meters or so and 15
- 20 meters at most depending on the class of transmitter used. WiFi has you
out to 100+ meters even more in some conditions. I’ve done 30 miles point to
point with 5 GHZ WiFi outside on towers.

Well, the Play 5's have line in, so you wouldn't totally be screwed. I get that

said it still could be done.

I think it was the Airport Express that Sonos and others recommended to use
to bring Airplay audio into other setups by way of that line out jack it had. I
don't know that other routers have that.

Well I’m not sure it’s a real big deal. Granted I have, use and like the
airport routers a lot but they aren’t really that full featured. I personally
use a different router and use the airports as access points but I was just
starting to think it was getting long in the tooth and head in another

Re: Apple Ceases Development of 'AirPort' Wireless Routers as Engineers Reassigned to Other Products - Mac Rumors

2016-11-21 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
I could see Airplay going away. I mean, it's not universal. It's generally not
cross platform. Look at what Sonos is doing by simply using standard wifi. Not
only that, but Bluetooth is really becoming more the thing now.

I'm still using an old 4th gen and it still works like a charm.
I never had any other brand last this long. Then there's the question of the
future of air play.

Yes, the airport express works extremely well for this, and I don't know any

I think it was the Airport Express that Sonos and others recommended to use to
bring Airplay audio into other setups by way of that line out jack it had. I

Well I’m not sure it’s a real big deal. Granted I have, use and like the
airport routers a lot but they aren’t really that full featured. I personally
use a different router and use the airports as access points but I was just
starting to think it was getting long in the tooth and head in another
direction like a new TP Link AD router or Netgear model which have much much
more advanced WiFi features now.

  They were good products though.

Re: Apple Ceases Development of 'AirPort' Wireless Routers as Engineers Reassigned to Other Products - Mac Rumors

2016-11-21 Thread Scott Granados
Hahaha in all seriousness I’m completely down for very easy to use home models
and for that matter with very good easy to set up security options. I’d much
rather see a more secure home and that made as simple as possible for the end
user. People like my mother who shouldn’t have to depend on the free tech
support from her son to set up her home network.

There’s plenty of room for the double cream filled option up stream in the
provider networks. Sometimes, that simplicity down stream comes with more
complexity up stream. Until google builds a network engineering robot I should
be fine. (Although I’m sure that’s in the works)

Oh definitely, for you Scott you would want the double crème brûlée stuff

welcome to it. Smile.

I'm still using an old 4th gen and it still works like a charm.
I never had any other brand last this long. Then there's the question of the
future of air play.

As long as the major backbone routers stay complicated well I’ll be good.

Seriously though, the airport was one of the easiest to set up. I was hoping
for a nice MIMO TRI band option but I guess that’s not to be.

Well I'm really sorry to see it happen. I was hoping for new Apple routers. I
know they charge more than some others. But setting up one of those on a Mac
was a total piece of cake. I'm all about pieces of cake when it comes to

Re: Apple Ceases Development of 'AirPort' Wireless Routers as Engineers Reassigned to Other Products - Mac Rumors

2016-11-21 Thread Scott Granados
Well I’m not sure it’s a real big deal. Granted I have, use and like the
airport routers a lot but they aren’t really that full featured. I personally
use a different router and use the airports as access points but I was just
starting to think it was getting long in the tooth and head in another
direction like a new TP Link AD router or Netgear model which have much much
more advanced WiFi features now.

They were good products though.
