Re: ftp server clients for the mac?

2018-03-28 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I feel a little silly answering this, but there are a few incorrect statements
here and some expansions:

1. FTP is a protocol and has been available in some form on Macintosh computers
since the beginning, ftp the original protocol available since 1985 and
probably earlier was not very secure, the password was transmitted in exactly
as you typed it, there was no encryption available and it had several other
faults. Several of those problems with the protocol were fixed in newer
releases but sftp which is essentially a specialized version of ssh has long
been considered a better solutions for transferring files between two systems
where you don’t need much synchronization and can be used as an underlying
protocol for git.

What is git? It is a way to keep various versions of files around in a
distributed system where one can fairly easily go back to an earlier version.
And yes there are git clients and servers for the Macintosh.

In terms of finder and FTP it is possible or at least it was inTiger to have
the finder open a ftp session but if for any reason the TCP connections that
ftp was using failed, than the finder had a tendency to hang. So Transmit and
several other clients have been created with better fault tolerance (note that
transmit can use ftp which is still insecure or other protocols that are better
secured for privacy). Most of the commercial file transfer clients support
several protocols and therefor e can make them all appear pretty much
equivalent.

I believe that in most cases today when people are asking about ftp they are
really either thinking about sftp or are using a very limited use case, perhaps
uploading a new article to a wordpress site or downloading the archives of
software or documents from sites that want to ensure that the downloads that
are started are supported by the most ancient of file transfer protocols. (FTP
uses port 20, and SMTP the original mail sending protocol uses port 25 so as
you can see FTP has been around a very very long time.

I don't think Finder does FTP. Command-K is for connecting to either another
Mac running as a server, or a SAMBA server, like a NAS box.

If you're serious about FTP, particularly if you want a good and secure

Well, you can use the Finder, just press Command+K, enter server details, and
press connect. I believe there are also command-line ftp clients in the
terminal, and there’s always Emacs.

Hi,

I stand and sit here corrected. Thanks. Yes, as long as Remote Login is
enabled in the Sharing pane of System Prefs, sftp is a viable option. Sorry

Re: Ftp server using the server app

2014-01-06 Thread Chris Blouch
For #2, I found this hint which says you have to hack the login user's
ssh shell to use the sftp server so even if they come in that way they
get the same service.

http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20020913055647558

For #1, I would think that the logged in user's access is restricted
through judicious use of permissions.

I had attempted to set up regular ftp to a mac behind a firewall some
time ago and never could get it to work right. The ssh stuff seems to
work without a hitch, as far as firewalls and connections go. I just
portmap 22 on my public ip side to 22 on the mac behind the firewall. Of
course, since it was just for me, I never played with all the shell
login hackery. I imagine you would hit bandwidth constraints before any
kind of sftp server performance issues would arise.

Re: Ftp server using the server app

2014-01-03 Thread Chris Blouch
Depends on which vintage of OSX you are running. FTP was dropped from
the sharing control panel a while ago but some variant of

sudo -s launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ftp.plist

will get it going again. The port issue will still exist along with
security problems with FTP in general. It's been a while since I checked
into this but in addition to opening port 21, once the connection is
established the FTP server will do all future connections through one or
more other ports chosen from a pool of available ports, usually ports
1024-5000. So you have to have in and out traffic allowed on all those
ports in your firewall, which is why security people frown on FTP. sftp
only needs port 22, which is the same port as ssh. Also ftp sends all
text in the clear such as usernames and passwords while sftp encrypts
everything. Just some stuff to google and think about. If you're just

Re: ftp server usable in os10?

2011-09-26 Thread Chris Blouch
Apache is generally known as a web server and is the built-in web server
you enable when you turn on web sharing. There is also ApacheFTPServer
which is also from the Apache Software Foundation but is not
pre-installed on OSX.

http://mina.apache.org/ftpserver/

While you could install this on OSX, the tnftp server is quite capable
and is already installed by default. It is also the default for FreeBSD,
NetNSD and SuSE Linux so setup info shouldn't be hard to find.

Can I use an alternative port instead of 21?

Re: ftp server usable in os10?

2011-09-24 Thread Mark BurningHawk Baxter
I use Transmit, but I don't actually use the app, just put in the FTP
information and have it mount as disk, in finder. While FTP (command K)
doesn't set the right permissions (even after selecting to log in as
administrator), and as you say it's pesky slow and sluggish with anything
large, Transmit seems to be able to mount it with the correct permissions and
make it run much more smoothly.

Mark Baxter,
If transmit is capable of making ftp servers available in finder, then that is
just the solution I've been hoping for. I'm going to try it. Chris Blouche,
thanks for your help along the way for mac fuse, mac fusion and finder. I'll
let you know how transmit turns out so that we all can benefit.

Re: ftp server usable in os10?

2011-09-24 Thread Chris Blouch
Yup. Sounds like you need to use ftp outside the GUI or add on a third
part one. Years ago I used Rumpus but I have no idea if they are still
good. If you're not afraid of mucking about in the unix underbelly then
do a man ftpd to find out about all the bells and whistles actually
possible in the tnftp server package that comes with OSX. Only some of
this stuff is exposed in the comfy GUI. In other words, you can probably
poke around and use what you already have.

Hi Chris, Sorry to speak for someone else but the ftp-server-under-lion-thing

The problem with the built-in server is, that, if you have a very large
userbase, which I know Paul does have it will be a hell of a job to add them
all one by one. Thats why he (and I too) am looking for a third party ftp
server application for the mac.
I have searched yesterday but coudnt find one in the appstore or through a
quick google.

Re: ftp server

2009-11-04 Thread Ryan Mann

Hello. Mac OS has a built-in FTP server. You should be able to
enable it by doing the following:
1. Go to System Preferences.
2. Once you are in System Preferences, go into sharing.
3. Interact with the services table.
4. Arrow through the list of services until you get to file sharing,
then check that service.
5. Stop interacting with the services table, then use your usual
VoiceOver navigation to get to the options button.
6. Check the checkbox to share files using FTP.
After that, you should be able to log into the FTP server using your
regular username and password.
I hope that was enough instruction.
