Re: Nisus writer pro 2.4 for sale today.

Hi,

Just letting everyone know that I had troubles creating a MacUpdate account.
The website isn't particularly VO friendly. But I emailed c...@macupdate.com
and he very promptly created an account for me. So if anyone else has
difficulties creating an account I suggest you do the same.

Cheers,
Nic

Hi, I do not have a word processor on my mac except for text edit. How does it
compare to pages? Why should or would one consider this over pages? Thanks so
very much. I do need to purchase a full fledged word processor but I have not
done so because I wasn't sure about accessibility.

Thanks,

Re: Nisus writer pro 2.4 for sale today.

2013-06-25 Thread Nicholas Parsons
HI Christina,

I have both Nisus Writer Pro and Pages, but I have not used Pages that much. I
found Pages a little complicated and confusing. I have unfortunately not yet
taken Anne's course, which I hope to do someday, but if I did I'm sure this
would resolve many of the issues I have with Pages.

That said, my impression is that Nisus Writer Pro is simpler and easier to use
than Pages. For instance, I like the fact that I can simply highlight text and
then use the VO-SHIFT-M keystroke to change the formatting, mark it as a
heading, add it to the table of contents etcetera. It also seems simpler to me
for adding footnotes. VoiceOver seems to misbehave a bit for me when I try to
add footnotes in Pages. Not so with Nisus.

Those are just my impressions though. I haven't done any serious comparison
between the two apps.

Cheers,
Nic

Hello Nick,

Is it possible to read the contents of tables in Nisus Writer Pro? Pages has a
menu item Convert table to text which makes tables readable. So if Nisus
Writer doesn't have something like this, then Pages is a much better option.

Re: Nisus writer pro 2.4 for sale today.

2013-06-25 Thread Esther
Hi Nic,

This isn't Annie, but the Nisus license states You may use a copy of the
software on a second or portable computer, as long as the extra copy is
never loaded at the same time the software is loaded on the primary
computer on which you use the software.

This is a pretty good deal -- the lowest price that I've seen for Nisus
Writer Pro except for the one time that it appeared as part of a MacLegion
app bundle of 10 apps for $49.99 back in 2011, when the current major
version update was first released. If you haven't purchased a MacUpdate
promo before, you should be aware that you'll need to create a user
account, and that requires a one-time negotiation of a CAPTCHA. Once you've
created an account for your MacUpdate purchases, you can access all your
previous receipts and registration information, as well as links to the
product, from your account login. The current promo runs for about another
10 hours, and can be found, while the deal is active, at this web page:
https://deals.macupdate.com/

Note that you buy this from the Macupdate site and not through the Mac App
Store.

They may also extend the period at which the app is available at a lesser
discount (like 25% instead of 51%, for a few more days), but that's at the
discretion of the developer who is offering the deal.

I particularly like using Nisus Writer Pro for creating of ePub versions of
documents. Although Pages can create ePub output, Nisus Writer Pro has
more features, such as the easy creation of table of contents from headings
(which requires the Nisus Writer Pro version, as opposed to the Express
version). For example, I created an ePub version of Justin Romack's blog
article about using the Kindle app by adding the headings to a Table of
Contents that I could use to navigate through the article, when I read the
new version in iBooks. Although I also use Pages, I find Nisus Writer Pro
a bit more intuitive to use, and I also like the PowerFind features that
additionally let you use regular expressions to search for matches. The
Nisus Writer Express version does not have support for features such as
Table of Contents, Indexing, Cross References, Bookmarks, Track Changes,
Comments, Watermarks, Export to ePub, and Export to .docx (though it can
import .docx format Office documents).

You can check out the 15-day free trial download at:
http://www.nisus.com/pro/

Christine asked earlier about other word processing apps. For simple
operations, the third party app Bean, or iText Express (available from the
Mac App Store) can offer a few more options than TextEdit, in terms of
support for headers and footers of pages, and footnotes, or page/word
counters. TextEdit is quite useful. But if you need more options, such as
bibliographic references, etc. Pages or Nisus Writer (in the Express or Pro
versions) will do more.

I also like the PowerFind features of Nisus. You can search for terms
using regular expressions, if you are used to using this in linux or unix.
This allows you to craft more detailed searches using other information
that you know about the search strings or their attributes.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Hi Anne.

I am not working much with tables, especially not on mac, but you can copy the
text from a table. The people behind nisus writer pro will be glad to improve
accessibility of tables, but they do not know how or if that can be done.

I have both pages and nisus writer pro. I am sure pages can do some things, but
to me pages is to difficult to use.

Nisus writer pro is quick and easy especially for what I need it is often to
make a table of content and make an epub. I have tried that in pages, but it is
much easier in nisus writer pro, but you would maybe find it easier in pages.
It depends on how you work I think.

I am an old windows user, who got tired of windows, maybe nisus writer pro is
an easier switch.

Cheers Annie.

 Hello Nick,

Is it possible to read the contents of tables in Nisus Writer Pro? Pages has
a menu item Convert table to text which makes tables readable. So if Nisus
Writer doesn't have something like this, then Pages is a much better option.

 Cheers,

 Anne

 HI Christina,

I have both Nisus Writer Pro and Pages, but I have not used Pages that much.
I found Pages a little complicated and confusing. I have unfortunately not
yet taken Anne's course, which I hope to do someday, but if I did I'm sure
this would resolve many of the issues I have with Pages.

That said, my impression is that Nisus Writer Pro is simpler and easier to
use than Pages. For instance, I like the fact that I can simply highlight
text and then use the VO-SHIFT-M keystroke to change the formatting, mark it
as a heading, add it to the table of contents etcetera. It also seems
simpler to me for adding footnotes. VoiceOver seems to misbehave a bit for
me when I try to add footnotes in Pages. Not so with Nisus.

Those are just my impressions though. I haven't done any serious comparison
 between the two apps.

 Cheers,
 Nic

Re: Nisus writer pro 2.4 for sale today.

2013-06-25 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Annie,

Thanks for the information. Nisus Writer Pro wouldn't work for me because
sometimes, translations come in that are all tables in a Word document and I
can manage them fine in Pages.

I've never been a windows user and if you put me in front of a PC running
Windows and JAWS I'd be completely lost.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Nisus writer pro 2.4 for sale today.

2013-06-25 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Hi all,

That tables trick is exactly the kind of reason why I should take Anne's course.

Anyway, like others I too like using Nisus Writer Pro to create ePub books.
It's really simple. But it does seem a lot of money compared with Pages if you
simply look at its functions/features rather than the ease of use issue. That's
why this discount is so exciting, even though it's still twice the price of
Pages.

Christina, Nisus Writer Pro offer a free 15 day demo on their website. That's
what I've been using to test it out. It's pretty awesome, as they only seem to
count 15 days of actual use, rather than 15 days from when you first install
the software. I've probably been using it for a couple of months now on both my
iMac and MacBook and they've each got a few days of demo left.

Esther, I'm trying to create an account with MacUpdate, but Rumola seems to be
getting the captcha wrong. There seems to be one password field, no confirm
password field, and a captcha field. Rumola fills the captcha field, but when I
submit I'm told that the captcha was incorrect. There's also Facebook and
Twitter handle fields which I've left empty. I assumed these were optional, but
maybe I was wrong. Any ideas on what's going on?

Cheers,
Nic
