Yeah Donna,

My Rhaspberry pi 3 is going to be used for security cameras aroud my house,

And the simple thing is they are just USB web cameras to the pi with an OS
called Motion eye OS which lets you setup all the features you need

Very cool and for next to no cost.

Hi Donna, you can do a lot with them. People run phone servers, bitcoin
mining, cameras, media centers, video game consoles, and a host of other
things. They make great micro controllers do to the I/o bus and you can even
parallelize them. Someone built a 98 member Bayo Wolf super computing cluster
with a pile of pis and some small ethernet switches.

You can run speak up on them as well as the Orka screen reader with a USB sound
dongle. You can also access them remotely via ssh and use the accessibility
tools on your native machine.

The Mac is great working with these small devices because of the Unix
filesystem under the hood. You can drop to terminal and build your cards and
work with the files with out needing to install extra software.

Good stuff.

2017-03-10 Thread Scott Granados
Hi Donna,

Raspberry pi (pi as in the ratio of the circumference to radius of a circle and
all that), is what we’re talking about. A raspberry pi is a small, credit card
sized PC on a board that you can program yourself. It uses a micro SD card for
file storage / disk and includes 1GB of memory, a quad core ARM processor,
video processor, WiFi, Bluetooth, Audio, 4USB and an ethernet port. In the
case I have for it the whole thing is about as big as a deck of cards. I have
a full featured phone system and fax server on mine. They also include a 40
pin I/O port that you can break out for other devices like serial lines,
printers, extra fans, and so on and so forth. Cost is about $35 for a pie and
you can get in to full kits for $70 or so on Amazon.
