Re: Solona nearly never available lately

2011-01-29 Thread Thomas
Trust me, your hearing doesn't have to be compromised to screw those
things up, mine's pretty good, but a certain large searchengine and
it's e-mail service is just bad because of all of the backwards junk
they play with it.Wouldn't say my hearing is great but by the
numbers it's average and do have a pretty good ability to zone out a
lot of noise and focus on what I need to hear, but some of those as I
said are just bad.

Say,

Has anybody here noticed that Solona seems never to be
available during the past two months or so? Every single time
I log on or tried to use it or just check to see if it's
available, it always reports not available. That, I guess, is
one of the drawbacks to a human based solution like this, but,
just kind of wondering what's going on?

Hi all!
Sorry I was only making a suggestion! :]
I was not admonishing no one!
I did not change the subject heading myself because I would not know what to
call it, so it would mean something to those it mattered too!
It was that they were no longer talking about Solona! J:]

Say,

Has anybody here noticed that Solona seems never to be available during
the past two months or so? Every single time I log on or tried to use
it or just check to see if it's available, it always reports not
available. That, I guess, is one of the drawbacks to a human based
solution like this, but, just kind of wondering what's going on?

Does the poster have any pointers for installing this as a VM under fusion?

You can get a USB bootable immage from vinux.org.uk

If you know anything of unix commands you should be fine. And the only thing
you'd want it for anyway is firefox which can be accessed threw the menu

Re: Solona nearly never available lately

2011-01-26 Thread brandt

You can run ubuntu in a VM and use webvisum in firefox.

The vinux.org.uk version of ubuntu is preconfigured for us VI folks, and
free at that.

Well, let me say this. I did indeed hear that he is ill. I suspect,
though, that it wasn't helping the blind that made him sick. Perhaps it was
some underlying condition. What ever the case may be, I do hope he gets
well. By way of personal reflection, I can't help but wonder what we Mac
users can do to effect a software based solution. Sorry, installing windows
seems like a cop out to me.

Say,

Has anybody here noticed that Solona seems never to be available during
the past two months or so? Every single time I log on or tried to use it
or just check to see if it's available, it always reports not available.
That, I guess, is one of the drawbacks to a human based solution like
this, but, just kind of wondering what's going on?

Re: Solona nearly never available lately

2011-01-26 Thread Carolyn Haas
Hi:
How about some of these so-called brilliant people who depend on capchias to
block 'bots or fake entries being required to provide the solution. I wonder
how quickly things would change if any website using them was required to
provide an accessible means of getting them solved. I also don't understand
the purpose of screwing up the audio so that those of us with compromised
hearing don't even have a chance?

Re: Solona nearly never available lately

2011-01-26 Thread Donna Goodin
I guess it's pretty odious work. I tried to recruit volunteers for him a while
back. I know people who for various reasons have free time and actually needed
something to occupy themselves, but they really balked when it came to solving
captchas. One friend actually said that she has a hard enough time solving
them for herself, and wouldn't want to be responsible for solving them for
others.

Re: Solona nearly never available lately

2011-01-25 Thread Justin Ekis
Wow. This is very sad indeed. I've never heard anything about this before. I
certainly hope he gets well.

As hard as he was already working on the captcha solution service, he had
expanded into other areas and it seemed like things were doing very well. In
fact, just over a week ago I ordered one of his tactile screen protectors for
my new iPod touch. This would explain why I never even received any
confirmation. I was starting to be frustrated, but if he's ill I'm not even
going to worry about that.

It's possible that this is beginning to get off topic for the list, but I would
like to share one last thought. If this is correct, The community really should
make some effort to contact him. This individual is doing tremendous things for
the blind community and we should demonstrate that we care about his wellbeing
in return. First, where did you hear this news? There's nothing on the blog or
twitter account, but I wouldn't really expect anything, given the situation.
I'd just like to see the original list post and determine if there's an
authoritative source or just rumors floating around the internet. One of the
last posts on twitter from late October just says that he's been too busy to
use twitter very much. If you have a link for a list archive or can forward the
post itself, send it to me off list.

Now there's an idea. Give the prisoners something useful to do with their

Re: Solona nearly never available lately

2011-01-25 Thread Sarah Alawami
Oh no! Man no wonder I have not seen him post on twitter. I hope he will be ok.
I don't think anyone can do what he did.

Re: Solona nearly never available lately

2011-01-25 Thread Carin Headrick
Is there any way we can send him well wishes or something? I have tried
emailing him, but that hasn't gotten a response, probably because the
poor fella is sick. Does anybody have a contact where we can send him
cards or some such?

It breaks my heart. I wouldn't be surprised if he became ill. The man
was staying up to solve captchas. I told him to not do that because one
needs sleep to be well. But he probably did it anyway.

Say,

Has anybody here noticed that Solona seems never to be available
during the past two months or so? Every single time I log on or
tried to use it or just check to see if it's available, it always
reports not available. That, I guess, is one of the drawbacks to a
human based solution like this, but, just kind of wondering what's
going on?

Re: Solona nearly never available lately

2011-01-25 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Well, let me say this. I did indeed hear that he is ill. I suspect, though,
that it wasn't helping the blind that made him sick. Perhaps it was some
underlying condition. What ever the case may be, I do hope he gets well. By
way of personal reflection, I can't help but wonder what we Mac users can do to
effect a software based solution. Sorry, installing windows seems like a cop
out to me.

Hello Ray,,,
the reason Solona is almost never available is because the guy who ran it
has been very sick. this was established on another list. this guy dedicated
himself to helping blind people to the point where it made him sick.
