You Need to make sure that all items are clear of the camera, and make sure to
hold it about a foot away from the item.

How long does it take on average to get an answer, or does that depend on the

Well I'm half serious; I fully expect at least two posts from people who would rather take up

it might be a good idea to anticipate this and include a description when referencing an app

Okay, to practice what I preach, here goes:

App: VizWiz
Category: medical
Seller: Jeffrey Bigham
Price in US currency: free of charge
URL: US app store is http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/vizwiz/id439686043?mt=8
Description: VizWiz lets blind users recruit remote sighted workers to help
them with visual problems in nearly real-time. Users take a picture with their
phone, speak a question, and then receive multiple spoken answers.

Details on URL and web pages for VizWiz [was Re: VizWiz]

2011-05-30 Thread Esther
Hi Joseph,

VizWiz is already in the UK Stores, as well. I haven't tried to search
exhaustively, since I'd have to go through the process of resetting my iTunes
store location to every country in order to check. You should just try the
link for the U.S. iTunes store. This is a free app:

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/vizwiz/id439686043?mt=8

Here's the web site:
http://vizwiz.org/

There's a specific link from that home page to a Vizwiz tutorial:
http://vizwiz.org/tutorial.html

The tutorial is helpful to read through first, since the app just opens with
the camera.

There's also a web site for the research project at the University of
Rochester, if you want to read up more about this (in a scholarly research
sense)
http://hci.cs.rochester.edu/currentprojects.php?proj=vw

The more readable informal New Scientist article about this project appeared a
couple of weeks ago:
http://www.newscientist.com/blogs/onepercent/2011/05/smartphone-app-lets-the-blind.html

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
