Re: clean install or upgrade?
Hi, Yes a Clean install does start things fresh but you will have the issues of re-inputting all serial numbers, pass-coes and such. Depending on the number of apps and such that you have on your Mac, this may or may not be a factor. If your SL system is running fine though, I would say that an upgrade will behave just as well as the clean install. I have performed hundreds of upgrade installs with no negative effects in the upgraded OS. Remember, as well, that the Clean install, then use of Migration Assistant is more or less the same process as the Upgrade. So if you truly wish the Clean install, you'll need to re-serialize, re-preference set and re-enter pass-code info for all necessary apps. In the end, it is basically your own comfort. Later... Re: clean install or upgrade?
Hi. As others may have said, performing a clean install might be the better option. But from personal experience doing two upgrades, upgrading first from Snow Leopard to Lion and then from Lion to Mountain Lion, my system hasn't been acting weird or anything. So if you don't want to go through the steps of performing a clean install, an upgrade will suffice. Re: clean install or upgrade?
Some may disagree with me on this, but it's my opinion that any time you install a new release of an operating system, whether the mac, windows, or anything else, it's always best to do a clean install. Not only does this give your system a fresh start, but it also clears out any left over clutter. Original message: Hello folks. At the moment I am running Snow Leopard. Re: clean install or upgrade?
I'd advise a clean install, only because once your system is up and running you will know that you are running a clean system from afresh: I personally like clean rather than over the top because if anything is not working right afterwards you can't say it wasn't because you installed over the top. When I did buy Lion, before Mountain Lion, when I upgraded from Snow Lepard, the Mac Book Pro which I had before, didn't work as well so since then, it's been clean for me. However, no computer yet so can't enjoy the fun and games you've all been having with Itunes. Kawal. Re: clean install or upgrade?
Well, having done both upgrading and a clean install, I can say without reservation of any kind whatsoever, but a clean install is the best way to go. If you do this, you'll get the nice snappy performance that you originally had from your Mac. Just be sure to backup all your stuff before you do it. Re: clean install or upgrade?
I've done only upgrades since Panther on my 4 year old iMac G5. Upgrades work fine in most cases. Just as any time you do brain surgery on your OS, have a backup. Also disconnect any external drives. You don't have to, but it's a best practice. I'll do an update on my Macbook, but a clean install on one of our Mini's, it had a dead HD, so this was a perfect time to fix that. Re: clean install or upgrade?
you go to the utilities menu in the installer i think chose disc utility then erase and install. I will watch feedback over next couple months then upgrade but at present what I have is working On 28 Aug 2009, at 06:54, Jessi and Goldina wrote: > > I plan to do a clean install also and plan to record it too. Re: clean install or upgrade?
Cool, I'm planning to do a clean install as well. Looking forward to that podcast Mike. Re: clean install or upgrade?
I plan to do a clean install also and plan to record it too. I'm not sure if I'll spread it around, I guess it depends on how well I feel it goes, lol. this is my first time ever installing an OS on any platform though, so I thought it should be recorded haha. can someone explain the steps for doing a "clean install?" I'm sure it's been discussed to death but I've been away at my cabin and had about 2000 messages in my inbox so didn't pay much attention as I rapidly deleted, lol. I assume a clean install means deleting leopard and all other data? which would of course mean backing up first...I can't use time machine cuz it won't work with my external drive without me deleting everything off it and I'm so not doing that, so I plan to just copy and paste all my data and stuff over. I guess I'll lose my emails, but maybe there's some way other than time machine of archiving them before I do this? and now I'll stop rambling, I'm sure I'm not making much sense. it's time for bed and book for me. but I just wanna make sure I have all the steps in place for when the big moment comes!!! I'm pretty excited about it!! Re: clean install or upgrade?
I would reccomend that you do a clean install, it may take a bit more time to reinstall everything, but it's usually more reliable, certainly that's what I'm going to do, and I plan on recording mac pod cast number 10, dedicated to the install of snow leopard, so stay tuned for that. Re: clean install or upgrade?
I generally do the upgrade. Unless you're having problems with the current system you should be fine doing the upgrade. On the Mac, user files are kept in one place so changing out the system has less chance of stepping on something. CB a radix wrote: > Hello, i am ordering sl via the phone now. Re: clean install or upgrade?
You could do an upgrade and that wouldn't be an issue for you as much as perhaps others. You haven't loaded lots of stuff and so forth yet. So, go ahead and do the upgrade, it should not pose any problems for you. On Aug 27, 2009, at 10:17 AM, a radix wrote: > Hello, i am ordering sl via the phone now.
