Re: Installing Bootcamp On MBA: Any Tips For Success

2014-02-16 Thread Eileens Misrahi
Hey there,

Thanks for piping in. You answered a question I had about when I insert the Win
CD and Win 8 disk. Still out and about, so I might not be able to catch you on
Zello until tomorrow. Thanks again. Oh yeah, I know I will need to give up a
little bit of my precious disk space, but I think I will need all of the RAM
and processor speed. That's why I decided to take this route for now.

Cheers,
Eileen

Re: Installing Bootcamp On MBA: Any Tips For Success

2014-02-16 Thread Kayaker
Hi,

Yes. Find me on zello.

But you need to assign a part of your precious internal SSD to be dedicated to
Windows. There is no getting around this to my knowledge. You can certainly use
your thumb drive as extra storage, but windows needs it's own partition on your
internal drive.

As for the CD ROM, it shouldn't matter. Do connect the drive prior to the
process, but no need to pre install the windows cd into it. And yes, you will
need sighted assistance to install windows via bootcamp. Don't trust the
podcast and counting key presses. You don't want to mess around with this.

Re: installing Bootcamp

2014-01-02 Thread Chris Blouch
I was doing this for somebody else to run their QuickBooks on so I
wanted to make sure everything was legit. I didn't know about the
upgrade installer trick but it turned out to be slightly cheaper getting
a full version off Amazon than an upgrade directly from Microsoft.
Anyway, it's all working now.

When I was poking around the Windows store all I could find were
upgrades. Either Windows 8.1 from Windows 7 or Windows 8 from any other
version. I think I found in one of the FAQs that if you wanted to run it
in a virtual machine (or on a machine that never had Windows before) you
had to buy the system builder version. I found the 8.1 System Builder
for $97 on Amazon.

Right. The $97 one I got from Amazon was an original sealed in a package
so it seems to have been legit. At least it installed in VMWare with no
issues.

It is absolutely not necessary.

Also, the reason I recommended calling is exactly for the reasons you mention.
It is hard to find. I encountered all the same with regard to only finding
upgrades on the online store.

If you want to go with a system builder version fromAmazon, go for it! I had
to purchase two Windows versions recently for two different Macbook Airs and
one of those I went with was a full version of Windows via eBay for $39 I
think. But I did have to resort to Microsoft for the other one. And you run
the risk from purchasing from an individual on eBay that the key will be sold
to multiple individuals and become problematic after it is activated too many
times.

You can call the Microsoft Store if you want a full version of Windows 8 for a
somewhat reasonable price, $119 in my case, that you can be assured is a viable
copy of Windows without paying the Microsoft price of $199 for the system
builder version last time I checked.

Re: installing Bootcamp

2013-12-29 Thread Byron J. Lee
Why does Microsoft make getting an ISO and a key so dang hard? I would
think they'd just make it one of the standard options on their website.
Instead, I have to call a human being and give them my credit card over
the phone so they can dig out some secret hard to find copy. That sounds
kinda weird to me. Oh well, I will let you know what happens when I try
to get a copy of Windows. I'll probably get Windows 7 because Win8 is
getting a bit too visually difficult to use. For example, you can't
increase the font in the Metro interface at all if your monitor's
resolution isn't high enough.

Re: installing Bootcamp

2013-12-28 Thread Geoff Stephens
I don’t want to go digging around to find documentation for why you don’t have
to have a system builder version. It’s everywhere in the Apple Bootcamp
documentation.

(or on a machine that never had Windows before) you had to buy the system
builder version. I found the 8.1 System Builder for $97 on Amazon.

Re: installing Bootcamp

2013-12-28 Thread Geoff Stephens
You can always just call the store if you can’t find out how to get the ISO
online. But don’t let them sell you a system builder version of Windows. They
might try to do that. You can purchase the Windows 8 ISO and they will e-mail
you a key and a download link.

I don’t have the phone number handy right now.

Re: installing Bootcamp

2013-12-28 Thread Phil Halton
in bootcamp utility, there is an option to download/read a help file, or
"installation guide" as I think it is called, for the bootcamp process
As to no CD player, no problem, as long as you have the ISO (disk image) file
for windows. You just point bootcamp utility to that file instead of a disc in
a CD player. Realize that you will not have speech during the installation
process and will need a pair of eyes (hopefully attached to a tech savvy brain).

Re: installing Bootcamp

2013-12-27 Thread Mike Arrigo
Windows 8 is not any better for installing without sight than windows 7
was. You would need some kind of special install if you want to install
using boot camp. Alternatively, if you use fusion, you can install in
to a virtual machine instead, and fusion will allow you to install
windows without sighted help. I could comment on my thoughts about
windows 8 itself but that's not the point of this list. Suffice it to
say though that I think things are much more cumbersome than windows 7.

NO, you cannot transfer partitions, you may only have 3 partitions, I say this
because you've got a lion partition, lion recovery partition, and your bootcamp
partition.

Re: installing bootcamp accesible?

2011-09-23 Thread Cody
The only time you will need the sl dvd is after xp is installed, once you
insert the sl dv when you're at your windows desktop you'll probably get a list
asking you what you want to do with the dvd, just select run setup.exe. You
most likely won't have sound, so if you've got a usb headset you could plug
that in and use narrator to get you started with the install. here is the very
stripped down list of what you should do

1. in OX, go into the utilities folder (command shift U) and go to the bootcamp
assistant
2. Once there, it will ask you to download the windows drivers but you don't
need this step because lion is assuming you've got windows 7 even though it
doesn't explicitly tell you that. So just check the box that says I've already
got the drivers, and click next.
3. on the partition screen, there are 2 options, split the drive into 20 gigs
and the rest for mac, or just split the drive in half. I would split the drive
in half to avoid any future space problems you may or may not have.
4. When all said and done it will ask you to insert your windows cd and it
should, barring your mac will recognize the xp disk since it is Lion after all,
boot into the blue xp installer.
5. You will need someone sighted to select the 4th partition in the list, which
will be labeled as bootcamp. You'll probably need to format it, and after you
do, that drive label of bootcamp will not be there, so be sure you've got the
right one highlighted in the list.
6. The install should go as normal, and when it is finished and you've had help
setting up your time zone, user account and windows product key screens, then
you should be at your desktop. Plug in any usb audio device you have, and wait
for it to install drivers.
7. Press windows key plus r and type in narrator and press enter.
8. If you don't have any usb audio devices available to you, skip steps 6 and 7
and just insert your snow leopard disk. Start the installer on the disk and it
will automatically install all the drivers for you, and it will want you to
reboot.

Please note that if your machine automatically boots into xp by default, don't
panic, your lion install is not gone. To get back to lion as soon as you hear
the mac chime start up sound, hold your option key for about 15 20 seconds and
press right arrow twice and press enter.

I hope this helps

Thanks for your answer
I do indeed have a snow leopard dvd. If you would not mind I would really
appreciate if you could outline where in the procedure I bring in the dvd and
how I find the missing drivers.
I am a new user and would hait to be stuck in the middle of the process.

Thanks again,

Re: installing bootcamp accesible?

2011-09-23 Thread Cody
As far as installing xp on lion I'm doubting it will work, but then again, I
will say I've installed Vista, which is officially unsupported by apple now, so
that means xp will be unsupported as well. However this doesn't mean it will
not work, because it might but you'r going to have to find drivers, which apple
will not support, unless you've got a leopard or snow leopard disk and upgraded
to lion, that might work. Voiceover will not speak during the windows install,
so you will need an unattended setup, or sighted help.
