tts bug with some voices Re: New Voices in Mavericks (was, Re: os 10.9, is it worth it?)
Hi listers, Do you all remember the tts bug from some previous versions of osx and ios. The one that misspronaunced emailaddresses and url's. Well those are fixed in ml for the english or french voices. Badly to see that this bug is still around with the dutch voices, are there others that have the very annoying bug in an other language. I'm trying to make a list and see how we can motivate apple to fix this one. Sadly, this is reported more then a couple times, but yeah. kr -Peter On Mon, Oct 28, 2013 at 03:25:57PM -0500, BBS wrote: Hi Nick. Re: New Voices in Mavericks (was, Re: os 10.9, is it worth it?)
HI Traci, By default, Alex should just change pitch when reading a capital letter but should not say the word capital. This makes reading all caps much easier as you don't get all the unnecessary extra words. The other voices, however, will say capital and change pitch as well, which is unnecessarily verbose given that the pitch change is sufficient. Re: New Voices in Mavericks (was, Re: os 10.9, is it worth it?)
Nick, what I’ve done for all the voices, including Alex and the Vocalizer Expressive voices, instead of having it change pitch for capital letters, I have it beep for capital letters. I prefer this behavior because the pitch changes are freaky. New Voices in Mavericks (was, Re: os 10.9, is it worth it?)
Two questions: 1. Are there any new Australian English voices? 2. Do the new voices read out capital letters properly, as does Alex, or do they announce both capital and change pitch? No, I don’t think there are new Australian voices. No, that capital letter oddity is still present, at least in Ava. Re: os 10.9, is it worth it?
My favorite voice for Vocalizer Expressive is Karen because she sounds more human than the rest of them. I kinda find it funny that Nuance put the original Loquendo voices, (Alison, Kate, and Susan) into Vocalizer Expressive. Funny and a little bit saddened that they didn’t keep the ability for those three to do exclamations anymore. Re: os 10.9, is it worth it?
As someone who has read everyone of these Mavericks post, and has yet to update, the answer to this question for a gmail user seems to be No. I usually upgrade to the new operating systems in the first week or two, but from what I have read, I can't seem to find one thing that makes Mavericks worth the upgrade. Please do correct me if I am wrong, but since I would list email and mammal towards the top of what I use my computer for, it sounds like either Apple or Gmail dropped the ball somewhere big time. I don't plan on using Ibooks and I am disappointed to hear that Apple failed miserably when building the accessibility in to it. As a die hard Apple fan, iMac, Mac Air, iPhone 3S, 4S, and 5S, I feel Apple has really been slipping in testing accessibility for releases. Considering how buggy IOS 7 is, and now Mavericks, I might have to start paying more attention to what the other guys are doing. I have gotten rid of anything running Windows in my house so am disappointed by the results to Apple's latest releases. Hopefully the bug improvement schedule won't be on the same schedule fixing numbers has been, 8 years. Re: os 10.9, is it worth it?
Hi, I think you bring up an excellent point. In my opinion, There is no really one super addition to Mavericks. ibooks is cool, I’ve read 3 books with it already, but accessibility wise, it feels like its still in beta. That being said, it really doesn’t need much to become awesome. Label the buttons, fix voiceover in the table of contents, and add a continuously read function with Voiceover. I feel strongly that these are things we will see pretty soon. Same thing with mail. If you are a person who uses mail extensively with an IMAP gmail account, especially if you have a bunch of labels, rules and filters set up, your going to feel put out I think. Again, I feel strongly this will be fixed pretty soon. Why? It’s honestly in Apples best interest to do so. Who likes bad press right? Even if your OS is free. haha. Plus, it is obvious to see that Apple is trying to position itself as a more viable option for productivity. Not working well with the largest e-mail provider in the world isn’t a good way to get the ball rolling. lol. But besides these 2 things, which are indeed significant, Mail more than iBooks, Mavericks is pretty good. If you feel these two things are show stoppers? I don’t feel you will be missing much by waiting a little while to upgrade. That being said, since its free, You can always make a partition, and install Mavericks on that and take it for a little test drive. That’s what I really recommend to those on the fence. JMO. Hi Ricardo, Regarding iBooks, have you figured out a way to access collections? I have an embarrassingly large iBooks library, and it is divided into collections. Collections are one of the things that makes iBooks outstanding in my opinion. So can I have my collections accessible on Mavericks? Mary Sent from my iPhone On Oct 26, 2013, at 4:51 PM, Ricardo Walker rwalker...@gmail.com wrote: Hi, I think you bring up an excellent point. JMO. Hi Courtney. That’s a personal preference to update or not so you’d have to decide that for yourself. Personally, there are some bugs in Mavericks but they’re only tiny ones so it’s not a show stopper for me. But like I said, it’s a matter of personal preference and if you find any bugs, don’t hesitate to tell us and also send them to accessibil...@apple.com. Re: os 10.9, is it worth it?
I’d largely agree: But, I found one really nasty bug when it comes to pairing a bluetooth keyboard with the Mac under 10.9. Instead of the actual password asked for by the pairing dialog, Voice Over always reads: 12345678 So, if you often pair bluetooth keyboards to your Mac, I’d stay with 10.8 for now. Also be aware that not all third party apps are cought up yet. However, if those things don’t bother you and you are usually what you would consider a first adopter by nature, go right ahead and do it. Re: os 10.9, is it worth it?
Depends on what you do. If you like how VO reads messages in Mail, or you don’t care about Maps or iBooks (neither of which is fully accessible, though iBooks is usable and I haven’t played with Maps), or you don’t want app launches or waking from sleep to take a long time, don’t update. The advantages are the afore-mentioned iBooks, new VO voices, better key echo as you type, tabs in Finder, power/battery improvements (mostly good for laptops), a better Notification Center, and so on. yes, there are accessibility problems, but there are good points as well. It depends on what you use and what you need.
