2013-12-27 Thread Daniel Chavez
Hi there,
I use to do podcasts on Mac stuff. Since my server crashed back in June or so,
most of my podcasts are gone. However, I will take the time to do a new podcast
on SuperDooper.
As far as the hd goes, SuperDooper should backup the hole HD. From my
experience, SuperDooper does pretty well, and makes your destination drive
bootable, so you could boot off the destination drive.
My podcasts can be found at www.danielcproductions.net

Hi,
SuperDooper will backup everything, excluding certain system files.
My assumption is that SuperDooper will backup your BootCamp because it's part
of your HD.
I'll do some research to double-check this though.

Re: SuperDuper.

2022-07-24 Thread Chuck Reichel
Hi Anders,
After the initial back up super duper only takes me 4 or 5 minutes to up date
the original back up using the Smart Update option.
18 hours is way too long though.
Heres a blurb from my SuperDuper below;
Pressing "Copy Now" will use "Backup - all files" to copy Macintosh HD to WD My
Passport MBA using Smart Update. All files on Macintosh HD will be copied to WD
My Passport MBA, except the temporary and system-specific files that Apple
recommends excluding.

Smart Update will copy and erase what's needed to make WD My Passport MBA
identical to your selections from Macintosh HD. The result will mimic "Erase WD
My Passport MBA, then copy files from Macintosh HD," but will typically take a
fraction of the time.

Finally, WD My Passport MBA will be ejected when SuperDuper! Quits.

Re: SuperDuper Folder Exclusion

2014-04-28 Thread 'Chris Blouch ' via MacVisionaries
If you don't mind playing around in terminal you should look into the
rsync command. Generally, to backup anything that changed since the last
backup you would do

rsync -a ~/Documents /some/place/you/want/backups/stored

It also sometimes happens that you might have deleted a file in your
Documents folder but it still lives on in your backups. If you want
rsync to remove deleted files you have to add the --delete parameter.

rsync -a --delete ~/Documents /some/place/you/want/backups/stored

There is a much newer version of rsync that you can install with
macports or the like which is faster but the baked-in one will work as well.

Re: SuperDuper or CCC

2016-06-29 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland

Both are 100% accessible, and both will absolutely get the job done.

This discussion from time to time keeps cropping up on list. My personal
preference is Super Duper, but there really isn't any particular reason. A
lot of people will tell you that CCC does more. Whether this can be
confirmed, let me just be very straight up with you: I'm not sure one way
or another. Keep in mind, though I've used CCC, I've only done so maybe
once or twice, so definitely speaking, I'm not the one you'd want to ask
about that app.

I think the main reason I stick with Super Duper has nothing at all to do
with reliability, nor with accessibility. I think it's just more what I
started with, therefore, it's what I'm used to.

Really, regardless at the end of the day what anyone on this list may try
telling you, I'm gonna say the blunt brutal truth like it is. The truth is,
either one works, and either one will do exactly what you're needing. To
what extent, that's where the question lies.

If all you're wanting to do is make a backup image, and you don't really
care about incrypting it, or anything of the sort, then Super Duper
definitely will work. Plus, I don't want to give the impression that I know
this for sure, so make that very clear up front before I say this, but I
think, if memory serves correctly, they are both either price the same, or
are very close.

Really what it boils down to is, the preference is really up to you. IN
conclusion, both however definitely are great products.

Re: SuperDuper Versus Carbon Copy Cloner

2011-07-24 Thread Paul Henrichsen
Thanks, Mike. So, It would appear the smarter move would be to use carbon copy
cloner and save yourself $26. I just wanted to make sure they had the same
features before I decided which to buy.
SuperDuper has that sandbox feature, but that doesn't sound like anything I'd
use.
I'm also a bit concerned as to how often a developer would update a free
program as opposed to one where he made some money from the program.
I guess you have to assume that people will pay the $10 to the CCC program
developer and not just continue to use is program for free.

Re: SuperDuper Versus Carbon Copy Cloner

2011-07-24 Thread Dan
Hello,
I currently don't use Super-Duper, so I don't know about them.
CCC was updated a few days ago. Also, I read somewhere that the developer of
CCC works for Apple. So I don't think you'll go wrong.

Re: SuperDuper Versus Carbon Copy Cloner

2011-07-24 Thread Esther
Hi Dan, Paul, Mike, and Others,

Like Mike, I've used both SuperDuper! and Carbon Copy Cloner. And like Mike
and Dan, I'm mostly using CCC right now, but I think it's more a question of
personal preference. For the purposes of making a bootable clone of your hard
drive, which is one of the main uses of these programs in contrast to Apple's
built-in Time Machine backup, either program will work: this functionality is
complete in the free trial download of SuperDuper!

Mike Bombich (developer of CCC) did work for Apple for several years after
writing the first few versions of CCC for his own work as an IT support guy in
higher education, and then making it generally available. However, he's
currently working on his own projects, so there is no direct affiliation with
Apple now.

Lynne Smith, one of the mods/owners of the mac-access list wrote up a nice
article on making backup clone drives with CCC, SuperDuper! or with Terminal:
http://www.mac-access.net/Extras/System_Backup.html

As Mike says, both of these are good products. I like the fact that CCC gives
good, brief descriptions, and seems to be a bit faster. However, many new
users like the more extensive documentation of SuperDuper! So it really is a
question of style, here.

I have one question for others who have used these products. Does anyone who
uses a Bootcamp partition know the preferred means of backup via these software
packages? I'm asking for someone else, since I don't use Windows on my Mac.
My understanding from reading the FAQs is that CCC will copy the Bootcamp
partition, but that you can't directly boot into the Bootcamp partition using
the cloned drive. You can copy the Bootcamp partition back onto your main hard
drive after you've done a system upgrade. It appeared to me that
Super Duper! would not handle the Bootcamp partition at all, although both
these products can handle backing up a Virtual Machine.

Does anyone know how Bootcamp partitions (using Windows XP) work in Lion? The
reason this may be tricky is that the Lion installation creates a recovery
partition, and I don't believe the system "knows" about Bootcamp partitions
that may be present on the disk when it writes the new recovery partition.
Thanks for any pointers on this.

Cheers,

Esther

I'm trying to figure which to get, but I really want the smart backup
feature so my backups to a USB drive won't take so long.
 Thanks for any help.

Re: SuperDuper Versus Carbon Copy Cloner

2011-07-25 Thread Darcy Burnard
Hi. I also prefer Carbon Copy Cloner. There was one time however where CCC
wouldn't do what I wanted, and the free version of Super Duper would. I wanted
to clone the disks that came with my Mac to an SD card. CCC couldn't manage
this for some reason.
But that's the only time CCC didn't meet my needs, and given the new way Lion
is distributed, I don't see myself wanting to clone boot disks again.

CCC 5 is fairly similar to version 4, it has more features than super
duper and does work with APFS drives. CCC also has the ability to clone
Apple's recovery partition which Super Duper does not do last I checked.

Original message:

I had been using CCC 4 for some time but switched to Superduper as
it was faster to set up and use.

Now I may switch back because the current version of Superduper,
2.92, although it should support High Sierra, does not see any APFS
formatted drives.

If any of you are running CCC 5, how does it compare to the previous
version 4?

Cloning the recovery partition makes it much easier if you want to do a

the hard drive and you can do a clean install which I prefer to do for

3 which is in beta will support APFS.

Sounds like their development is falling behind, with high sierra, all
SSD drives are converted automatically, CCC was ready to go the day
high Sierra was released.

Original message:

Good information, thanks. I too like to do clean installs. The more I
do the easier it is.

By the way, for anyone who uses Superduper. I took a closer look at
their web site. The current version does not support APFS. Their version
3 which is in beta will support APFS.

Re: SuperDuper vs Carbon Copy Cloner

2017-10-11 Thread Mike Arrigo
I use CCC for my backups, I don't use time machine, mainly because I
don't make a lot of changes to a lot of files at once. As far as
restoring from a CCC backup, you would boot your mac from your backup
drive, you can then use CCC to clone back to your internal drive,
fortunately I have never had to do this.

i have never played with CCC but have thought about it.
Do you use the program in conjunction with Time Machine?
How would you restore a Mac cloned with this program?

Sounds like their development is falling behind, with high sierra, all SSD

Good information, thanks. I too like to do clean installs. The more I
do the easier it is.

By the way, for anyone who uses Superduper. I took a closer look at
their web site. The current version does not support APFS. Their version
3 which is in beta will support APFS.

Cloning the recovery partition makes it much easier if you want to do a
clean install on another mac, just boot from the cloned recovery, erase
the hard drive and you can do a clean install which I prefer to do for
each major release of the operating system, it takes a bit more time but
it's well worth it.

Thanks Mike. I am curious, what is the advantage of cloning the
recovery partition?

CCC 5 is fairly similar to version 4, it has more features than super
duper and does work with APFS drives. CCC also has the ability to clone
Apple's recovery partition which Super Duper does not do last I checked.

I had been using CCC 4 for some time but switched to Superduper as
it was faster to set up and use.

Now I may switch back because the current version of Superduper,
2.92, although it should support High Sierra, does not see any APFS
formatted drives.

If any of you are running CCC 5, how does it compare to the
previous
version 4?
