Re: Something I just Learned With Skype and Growl
shawn, as I wrote in my other message called someone using adium? growl speaks. But, only with voiceover turned off! that makes me really laugh 2012/3/21, Mark BurningHawk Baxter markbaxte...@gmail.com: Snip Also, Mark, Growl uses the main system voice so if you wanted to make changes to the voice, whether you want to change rate and pitch or the person altogether, you would have to go into system prefs and change any preferences there. /snip With all respect, please excuse me but the voice Growl uses, while it may be Alex, speaks with different rate and tone from my system voice, which is used for other self-voicing programs. If Growl is using the system voice, it's doing so without obeying the settings I changed in Preferences. That's my experience. Also, even when I check Hide all notifications, in Growl, Skype will still tell me who comes on or off line, and announce events themselves, if not their text content; this is done with the system voice as I have pre-set it. Growl, when it is allow to speak all notifications, uses a much slower version. That's just my experience. • Mark BurningHawk Baxter • AIM, Skype and Twitter: BurningHawk1969 • MSN: burninghawk1...@hotmail.com • My home page: • http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: Something I just Learned With Skype and Growl
Jenny, here's how to solve this trouble. when it says growl is in the background, go through windows by command+tab (i am not sure the voiceover command to switch among applications, ctrl+options+f1+f1, or double-tap with 2 finger to the left with trackpad, works) anyway: when you reach growl, it would say: growl has no windows then, go to the dock with ctrl+f3 or the dedicated voiceover command. look for the Growl icon, then, control+option+shift+m. you should find a menu popping up, and there you'd find the growl preferences! if the menu item is grayed, you should go up with up arrow and find reactivate growl I wasted one hour behind this issue! 2012/3/21, Jenny Keller jlperd...@gmail.com: I have problems with growl too. @shawn: here I am with feedback from last experiments of yesterday with skype and growl: negative result, as always. Now, as far as the Skype Home, facebook integration thing: I am actually rather disappointed in it. First, if you compare what's in the HTML pane of Skype Home and what you see if you go to your home page via a browser, there are posts in the browser that aren't listed in Skype Home. Also, while I like the idea of my mood messages and/or music going to my wall (makes me look all cool and edgy and ... stuff...), reading through others' wall / status updates is problematic--VO keeps getting hung up, on picture icons, there are a lot of HTML tags that aren't read out, and I suspect lots of stuff is missing, even more than I find when comparing the Skype Home pane to the Safari page... This all could be due to the fact that Im not running Lion. It might also be that I only see the Facebook of those who also have Skype Home running. Re: Something I just Learned With Skype and Growl
I have this suspicion too! For example: growl has, on its settings - i do not remember where-, a button called preview which makes you listen the voice you are choosing for notifications. With voiceover on, preview does not talk. with voiceover off, preview talks and loops! till I do not close the window I hear the preview message! The strange thing is growl does not read notifications with other apps too; I tried on line with Musicality support (musicality, an app to listen to last.fm service) if growl notified me the song title but nothing worked to me, the app creator, tried both with voiceover off and on, getting a positive result of growl talking in both cases! To complete information, I just tell you I am using OSX lion with compact voice. In Growl, I can get the Preview button to make a voice, but it's always a voice that sounds very much like Alex, but then, the author's name is right there by the speech, which makes me wonder whether it's another synthesizer template. Re: Something I just Learned With Skype and Growl
No, the problem with Skype is independent of those with Growl; they are just occurring simultaneously. What I *REALLY!* want you to tell Skype is that the audible sounds that announce new messages do *NOT* play, still, if your focus is in the Skype window. Regardless of whether Growl is set to speak messages, the little bleep should bleep when a message comes in, regardless of where your focus is. It has occurred that I have waited for messages to come in and not moved my focus out of the Skype window, and they have arrived silently; this is due *BOTH* to Growl's voice issues *AND* to Skype's inability to speak message text as well as to play the bleeping message received sound. hi mike, very strange! Unfortunately i do not know how to help, apps should show automatically. For shawn and others: here is the result of my last test: I turn voiceover on, and skype uses the integrated notification instead of growl. or, it uses growl but its functionality is incomplete...it reads incoming contacts but not chats. Re: Something I just Learned With Skype and Growl
Hey Elena and all. Sorry I haven't posted any replies about this, I was sick pretty much all day but I'm better. This is odd that you can't get messages to read automatically. Perhaps I could be of more assistance if we made a Skype call to each other and then we can solve this little problem. Also, Mark, Growl uses the main system voice so if you wanted to make changes to the voice, whether you want to change rate and pitch or the person altogether, you would have to go into system prefs and change any preferences there. Finally, I noticed something odd in Skype 5.6. Yes, I do change the notification setting to use Growl, but I find that when I shut down the computer for the day and start it the next, the notification setting reverts back to using the built-in notification setting and then I have to set it back to using Growl again. So Elena, check if that setting does that for you too. But as I said, I'll be willing to help anyone get this Growl stuff going for them. My Skype name is bbstheblindrapper. Something I just Learned With Skype and Growl
Hey guys. I found out something interesting with this new version of Skype. In the overview section of the notifications preference, rather than have Skype display it's own built-in notifications, now you can configure it to use Growl to display notifications. So what I did was I set it to that preference and went to Growl's preferences. There I chose Skype for the program I wanted to configure. In the application settings, I set the display type to speech. Also, in the notifications tab I set everything to use speech. There's a pop up button where you can choose hat notification you want to edit. Just basically set the display type to speech and you'll be set. The one thing I'm happy about with this method of notifications is that now that growl is set as the notification style, any messages that a person sends to you will now be spoken. This may have been posted, but I thought people should know about this new thing that Skype has given us. Re: Something I just Learned With Skype and Growl
Personally, I'll thank you, because I didn't notice the option to set the display style to speech until just now, so you've helped me, if no one else. Right now I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to comment on the Facebook posts I see displayed in the Skype Home pane. I also wonder whether they've fixed the bug which makes the notifications appear silently when you hover in the Skype message window.
