accessible FTP client?

2021-08-14 Thread Frank Ventura
Hi all, can anyone recommend an accessible (voiceover) FTP client that can
upload and download from a FTP server? Prefer a GUI program not a command line
app. I tried FIleziller but I can't seem to locate the list of files and
folders on the server once I connect. I used to be able to dothis from the
Finder but I think that no longer works on Big Sir.

thanks

Re: Accessible FTP client?

2017-03-16 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Further to Scott's suggestion, you can use FTP from the Finder as well, as long
as you're not trying to upload to the FTP server. Simply press cmd-k to open
the Connect to Server dialog, enter ftp://server_Name <ftp://server_name> or
ftp://server_IP_address <ftp://server_ip_address>. Alternatively, my go to app
for FTP is Transmit. Totally accessible, but not free.

Later...

ftp ftp.kernel.org <http://ftp.kernel.org/>

Once in ftp you use your normal cd and lcd commands, ls and so forth.

You also have the full SSH suite available so you can sftp and SCP if you want
to move files securely.

Thanks

For the most part, yes. Editting conf files can be a little bit dicey in
places, but it's definitely doable as long as you pay close attention to
what you're doing.

Does voiceover work the same in terminal mode as it does with the rest

You can use Brltty instead even though i haven’t got it working.

As you do in the mac os terminal,

It is unix based so tab complete works fine.

With lftp, you get tab completion, so you don't have to type long file names.

It’s also very scriptable. You can automate the entire process, put it in Cron
and set a lot of things up with 0 user intervention. Of course, the original
poster wanted something graphical so this isn’t it but yes I’m with you love
the flexibility of the CLI.

If experienced in unix you know a simple alias will perform the entire ftp
or sftp process. You can have as many as you wish for as many remote
sources you want.

Hi I use Transmit and love it. It is very accessible with Voiceover. I
don't remember how much it costs but if you do a google search for it
you'll sometimes find coupon codes to save money.
Hope this helps! Jeff

Remember. There is always tab completion, so you don't have to type a whole
long file name, or whatever. Just type the first bit of it, then hit your
tab key. This said though, I agree with you, and figured that was what you
wanted, hince why I suggested transmit.

Hi Scott.
Well, i’ d rather not.
As much as I used to work with Unix in the past, I was really hoping for an
accessible graphical user interface for this task.

I really don’ t want to have to type long file names.
Thanks any way.

Re: Accessible ftp client for the mac.

2016-11-17 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland

um,

I thought cls was the command in dos that cleared the screen, which in unix
is simply just, "clear". I think the command you're thinking of is just
"ls". And, if you don't want anything but just a straight list of
files/folders then you can do, "ls -1".

It's kind a like the "dir" command was in the old dos days.

Still though, being he talks about Filezilla, I'm presuming that he wants a
gui based app, not a CLI.

lftp will definitely work. You should be able to install it by first
installing HomeBrew, then installing the lftp package. Finally, run it
from a
terminal. The cls command is the most convenient way to obtain a list of
files

in a directory.

Well, I tried transmit and indeed it works very well with voice over.
It is rather on the expensive side for what I need, about $35, however it is
much more than a simple client.
I have a week to decide.

Will see.

don't remember how much it costs but if you do a google search for it
you'll sometimes find coupon codes to save money.
Hope this helps! Jeff

very much Scott, thanks for providing that information.
Shellworld is a Linux /UNIX shell service. Currently I can log in here
not from windows, and have access to all the things I store and use as

I had wondered, if I ever manage a workable mac environment , How I would

Nice to know it would be an effortless situation.

With lftp, you get tab completion, so you don't have to type long file names.

Re: Accessible ftp client for the mac.

2016-11-17 Thread Scott Granados
Hi Kare, yes pretty much it does. You drop in to a window with a prompt
reminiscent of the old windows days for folks non familiar but with a unix type
prompt instead and a bash shell. The voice stays the same and the features
pretty much stay the same. I like it, others run a virtual environment like
ubuntu and use that instead but for me this works out pretty well.

Hope that helps.

lftp will definitely work. You should be able to install it by first
installing HomeBrew, then installing the lftp package. Finally, run it from a
terminal. The cls command is the most convenient way to obtain a list of files
in a directory.

I know this depends on the server. Trust me, I run my own ftp server. I'm

Hello,

You can also access any FTP server directly from Finder.
Just press Command-k and in the server address enter something like:
ftp://username:password@ftp.server.address

It's a very basic FTP client and it does tend to hang if you access
directories with a lot of files, but for a quick copy of files it's ok.

have to purchase an upgrade ($19 at the Panic web site). From their web page
description of version 4 additions:
"With the new Transmit Disk feature, you can now mount any of your favorites in
the Finder itself, even if Transmit's not running."

Hi Lou, nice to see your recent posts on list. I'd second Mark's
recommendation of getting Transmit from Panic software for FTP. You can buy
Transmit for $33.99 from the Mac App Store, if your system is Snow Leopard and
up to date. Alternatively, you can buy this directly from the developer's web
site. You can also get a 30-day free trial download from that site:
http://www.panic.com/transmit/

If you're looking for a free FTP solution, the usually preferred option is
Cyberduck. This is actually donationware where, if you continue to find the
software useful, you donate some amount. The Mac App Store doesn't handle this
type of model, so if you get Cyberduck from there, it will cost $23.99. You
can download Cyberduck from:
http://cyberduck.ch/
A donation made at that site will get you a license key that will stop the
"nag" messages when the app is launched, There are many people who like
Cyberduck, but I've read some complaints of slow transfers.

Fetch still makes an updated software product, but I don't know of many people
who use it.

Although you can use FTP from the server (via Command-K) from Finder, this can
be really slow. I would only use this to transfer local files, and otherwise
it hangs a lot. I wouldn't rely on this if you really need your download files.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Accessible FTP Client

2011-07-04 Thread Andre Nuno Soares
Hello,

You can also access any FTP server directly from Finder.
Just press Command-k and in the server address enter something like:
 ftp://username:password@ftp.server.address

It's a very basic FTP client and it does tend to hang if you access directories
with a lot of files, but for a quick copy of files it's ok.

André

What I did recently was get Transmit, which is not free but has a seven-day
trial. Then, after putting in the domain and user name and password, I chose
the "Mount as disk," button. This let me quit Transmit and use Finder to
copy/paste or delete from the FTP site or whatever. Really easy this way.

Accessible FTP Client

2011-07-04 Thread blindmacman
Hello List! Now that Earthlink has updated their Web Hosting site to
make it mostly inaccessible to blind Mac Users, I find myself in the
market for an FTP client... I know eons ago, Fetch worked great with
OutSpoken under Mac OS 7, 8 and 9 but the OS X version was not
accessible with VoiceOver... Does the latest version of Fetch or any
other FTP client work well with VoiceOver? Thanks for any help or
suggestions!

Re: VO accessible FTP Client

2009-07-04 Thread Josh de Lioncourt

Transmit is not free. That is it's only real drawback. The FTP command
line option in Terminal is included as part of the system, but will
doubtless prove difficult for less advanced users. While I could use
the FTP option in Terminal, I find it too clunky for m y own personal
taste, so use Transmit. Having options is good. :)

Re: VO accessible FTP Client

2009-07-04 Thread Josh de Lioncourt

I really don't recommend using the FTP terminal app unless you have
experience working with command line apps. If you don't, it is likely
to be a confusing and difficult process.

Transmit from Panic.com is my FTP client of choice. It is not free,
however. :)
