VOD a DAISY player for iPhone/iPod Touch

2010-01-02 Thread Greg Kearney
I have been testing VOD a DAISY playback software for the iPhone/iPod
Touch here is my report:

VOD will play only unencrypted DAISY 2.02 full audio and full text
full audio books. It displays the text on the screen and highlights
what is being read. It will also display images. It will not paly NLS
or RFBD books nor can it read text only DAISY books.

VOD will only play books through the earphones and not the built in
speakers which is rather odd. It does not support speeding up the
playback. You load books to the iPhone by means of FTP transfer which
is rather clever. In effect your iPhone becomes an FTP server with a
username and password you configure you then use an FTP client on your
computer to load or remove books in directories to the phone. It works
very well.

Accessibility could be complete with VoiceOver if the developer would
label all the buttons on the interface which they have not, for some
reason done. I have reported this to them.

The biggest issue is that this program always starts over at the
beginning of the book each time you go to a book. This is a major
issue which seriously impacts it usefulness to the reader and must be
address before I can suggest this program to anyone. Again I have
reported this issue to the developer and I would hope that they
address this, and the lack of bookmarking as well which are related to
each other.

All and all VOD is a good start to DAISY playback on the iPhone iPhone/
iPod Touch but not ready for real use until the play back position and
book marking issues are addressed.

Re: VOD a DAISY player for iPhone/iPod Touch

2010-01-02 Thread Scott Howell
Hi Greg, I completely agree. I had considered trying this, but it seemed to be
entirely to limited and would not meet my needs. I wondered about the interface
and why the buttons were not labeled, but glad you have tried and reported the
issues. I hope the developer does make these corrections. THe ftp transfer is a
neat idea and I've found a couple of apps that use this method for moving data
between a computer and the iPhone.
Thanks again for sharing your report.

daisy player for IPhone

hi wouldn't it be cool if we had a daisy player for the IPhone and
IPod touch line of products, so that owners of these devices would
just need one device?

That reminds me of something. Is it true you can buy an iPhone G3 without
the plan download new software for it, and it will talk like the new ones?
Or basically an iPod touch and get the new software and it will talk like
the new iPhones?

Re: daisy player for IPhone

2009-06-30 Thread Chris Blouch

Sorry. The text to speech and gesture recognition require faster
hardware which is currently only in the iPhone 3GS. Many expect a
similar bump to the iPod touch this fall which implies the accessibility
software will then work there as well.

Re: daisy player for IPhone

2009-06-30 Thread Scott Howell

Will, tell ya what, e-mail accessibil...@apple.com and hit them with
the idea. I encourage you and anyone else to do so and explain the
benefits etc. I have done this and the more folks that ask, the more
likely it will be given consideration. Hey, it would be the first
truly mainstream product on the market. I realize we are a minority,
but you know with a little help, it is possible someone could develop
an application to run on the iPhone or iPod Touch. I'm not saying
Apple has to do it all, but for the purposes of authorizing the
device, it may require a little help on Apple's part, but not entirely
sure. Anything is possible.
