Subject: OMG, I can't believe I fixed it!

So after spending most of the evening trying to set up my
new user profile, I fixed the option key problem.

I was using the status menu to check the battery.  In doing
so, I passed over the Text Input item in the extras menu.
It was set to Unicode Hex, rather than US.  I had actually
checked that setting under keyboard prefs and it was set
correctly, but evidently, the setting in the Extras menu is
separate from the setting in Keyboard prefs.

This has easily been one of the most annoying problems I've
ever encountered on the Mac.  On the upside, I don't have
to spend the next week configuring the new user profile.

Cheers,
Donna

I’m still using Sierra, but for years now I’ve had two keyboards configured on
my Mac since French uses so many different accents. I’ve never had a problem
switching keyboards and the French layout has never interfered with the
functioning of any keys.

No, I never got around to looking at the keyboard. I'm pretty comfortable
entering diacritics with the accent key on the US keyboard, so I probably won't
play with the Spanish one again till I have some time on my hands.

So after spending most of the evening trying to set up my new user profile, I
fixed the option key problem.

I was using the status menu to check the battery. In doing so, I passed over
the Text Input item in the extras menu. It was set to Unicode Hex, rather than
US. I had actually checked that setting under keyboard prefs and it was set
correctly, but evidently, the setting in the Extras menu is separate from the
setting in Keyboard prefs.

This has easily been one of the most annoying problems I've ever encountered on
the Mac. On the upside, I don't have to spend the next week configuring the
new user profile.
Cheers,
Donna

Donna,
I was curious so I went to Languages and Regions and added Spanish.
This also added the Spanish keyboard in Keyboard preferences. Then I
went to menu extras and could not find the text input menu. That is
because it changed to US which is still my preferred language. So this
is where one can chnge the language on the fly. Typically with just one
language one can go to the text input menu and bring up the character
viewer and select those oddball symbols so no need for extra keyboards

Yeah, I've been thinking for the last 1.5 months about vacuuming,
I haven't yet done it but I've been thinking about it.
And they say it's the thought that counts.

Maybe that control in extras is app-specific, or even trickier,
document-specific, and the one in System Preferences is for everything else.
Could be useful, although you’d have to really be good at remember what you use
where.

Cheers,
Donna

Thanks. I can't take much credit, though. It was sheer dumb luck. Since I
had already checked that setting under keyboard prefs, I could easily have gone
the rest of my life without looking at it in the extras menu. I just assumed
they were the same setting under different locations, but apparently they're
not.

This has easily been one of the most annoying problems I've ever encountered on

The trouble is that you are having difficulty receiving email?

I lost you when you said you can see the mail on the web. Are you
sending email somewhere else and then attempting to pull it back
down or are you sending an email with a cc or bcc which is not
 getting through to you?

Not wanting to be difficult just attempting to understand.
