iTunes is Buggy?

2009-09-11 Thread Justin Kauflin

Hey, I'd like to hear about everyone's experience of iTunes 9. I've
been having some problems with some bugs, and am wondering if these
are actual bugs, or I'm just doing something wrong.
First off, I cannot arrow through the songs as I could in Leopard
with the older iTunes. When I am in list mode and have the browser
active, I am unable to get Voice Over to announce anything while I
arrow through the lists. It actually doesn't even move the cursor.
In addition to this, I am unable to type any letters to have the
cursor move to a particular artist or album title. I wrote to Apple,
and they said they weren't encountering this problem. I'd like to see
if anyone is experiencing this? I am a big fan of iTunes, and am a
bit frustrated with these bugs.
Thanks for any feedback.

RE: iTunes is Buggy?

2009-09-11 Thread Chris Gilland

Let me just say on the Windows side of things, the problem you describe with
the list view not reading has been present sense 8.2. I dono what the deal
is, but Apple's really starting to piss? me off! They told me the same?
garbage, that o, we aren't having thiws problem either. Go get someone
sighted to hold your hand, change your dighppie, and show you how to
spoonfeed yourself, sota speak. It's like, look, idiots? We're not stupid.
We're not gonna tell you about a bug, if it's not really there. Now Cara,
before you say anything, and to quit downing Apple on list, allow me to
defend myself. I by far! am not! the first person who had this issue. I
spoke to a product specialist named Steve Whyte, who worked with me for
about half a week, on this, said he would escolate things, then apparently
never did. Every time I'd call him to check the status, I'd leave message
after message. He never e-mailed me back, never called me back, never had
anyone else! contact me on his behalf, I was left unknown. I finally just
totally gave up. I pretty much have almost ditched ITunes and went back to
WinAmp. I'm sorry, but, if that's how Apple wants to be regarding this,
then screw it! I got an mp3 player on my T-Mobile dash 3G which doesn't
require ITunes, and I got a subscription to Napster, so it's not like I
can't buy music. I'm just totally saddened though that Apple's not working
any better to fix some a these bugs, especially when they've promised for
now about 2 builds plus one version, that they'd do so. I pretty well put
my Nano 4th gen in a drore, and hardly use it now for this reason. I do use
it some, but not much.

Yes, I've had exactly the same experience, and it's really
frustrating. It's especially annoying when I'm trying to get to an
artist (or album) near the middle of the alphabet! Also, if you insert
a CD to import and more than one match is found online, you can no
longer access the list of choices as in the past. Instead, you
encounter the dread unknown and are stuck in never-never land. I was
hoping these would be fixed in last night's update. Maybe next time?

I agree with you. i personally don't like ITunes, and although Apple have
done a fantastic job there are other issues which they have not yet fixed
which I feel should be addressed However, in their defense, the
Accessibility team at Apple is very small and we are not after all Apple's
majority market concern.

Take care

Re: iTunes is Buggy?

2009-09-11 Thread Howard Dupuis

Wait a minute here. What I was referring to -- and I think this is
what the original poster meant, too -- are things that used to work
but now do not. Before Snow Leopard, I could go to the playlist
browser, interact with it, and then just use the down arrow *or* hit a
key to take me down the list. Looking for albums by an artist whose
name starts with L? Just type the letter l and there'd you'd be,
right on the first. If you wanted Lyle Lovett instead of Led Zeppelin,
you'd just down arrow a few times to get what you wanted. Under Snow
Leopard, this has stopped working. I've got more than 250 artists, so
trying to get to the middle of that list without that feature is
something of a drag.
I'm not asking for something new; I just want what we used to have.
Also, and for whatever it's worth, in general, I'm absolutely loving
Snow Leopard. Not seeking alternatives; just looking for a tweak or
three.

Re: iTunes is Buggy?

2009-09-11 Thread Woody Anna Dresner

Hi,

I thought I figured out a way to pick a particular artist from the
playlist browser, but when I went back and tried again, it didn't
work. The method I tried involved stopping interacting with the column
browser, typing a few letters, arrowing around a bit, and starting to
interact again. iTunes 9 seems really shaky; sometimes something
works, and sometimes it doesn't.

Thanks to Google, I did figure out how to get albums to show as well
as artists in the new Column browser, the iTunes 9 successor to the
playlist browser. Once you turn on the browser with Command-B, go to
the View menu. There's a Column Browser submenu where you can check or
uncheck columns such as artist, album, and genre. You can also change
the location of the browser; it can be on the top or on the left of
the screen. Changing this setting appears to have no effect on
accessibility.

Another area for serious concern is that there appears to be no way to
move between different sections of the iTunes window. Ironically,
navigation is better in Windows in this area; in Windows F6 takes you
between the Source list, the search box, and the track list. With
itunes 8, Tab served some of this function; at least it usually took
me to the Source list and search box. Tab sometimes does something
with iTunes 9, but often it has no effect at all. It's tedious and
time-consuming to have to VO-arrow through every control to get to
what you want.

Finally, while access to the store is certainly better on the Mac than
in Windows, it leaves a lot to be desired. Has anyone figured out a
way to get around in a long list of songs and preview the ones they
want? I searched for the Essential Michael Jackson and got a table
which, if I VO-Right Arrow through it, shows one song after another,
with preview images, song titles, and buy buttons. However, if I try
to interact with the table so I can move up and down a column to see
quickly what the tracks are, it doesn't work. The table is reported as
containing only three rows, which is obviously ridiculous, and all I
see is the preview for the first track and the buy button for the
last. I've tried the regular VO interact command and also VO-Equals,
but neither works. Furthermore, pressing Enter on a Preview image
results in unpredictable behavior. sometimes I am asked if I want to
buy a track, and sometimes a different page entirely loads.

I plan to write all this to accessibil...@apple.com, but I'd like
confirmation of the problems first.

It's ironic that Apple improved the accessibility of the Mac and
iPhone but decreased it significantly in iTunes. I think the more
constructive comments they hear from the more people, the better.

Best,
Anna

Re: iTunes is Buggy?

2009-09-11 Thread Justin Harford

Hello

One thing I can say is that the tab key sort of works under the mac.
The thing about it is that it is not disabled, but that it is just not
working with vo. This goes back to the issue of the broken cursor
tracking in iTunes. The keyboard cursor is moving through the lists,
its just that vo is not reading what is under it.

Thanks, Justin. This will make it easier to explain what's going on
when I send my note to accessibil...@apple.com. It probably also
explains why sometimes the arrows and tab key seem to do something and
sometimes they don't.
