Try going to the web page:
http://www.javatester.org/version.html
Bring up item chooser menu and type Ask to navigate to the heading
Method 1: Ask Java. Then VO-Right arrow to read The version and
vendor from the JRE followed by the reported version information.
(There are ways to check this by querying Safari's installed plug-ins,
but this is easier and the page goes on to give information and links
to the latest Java versions for the Mac.)
