Re: I hate mouse keys!!!
Hi Tim, You just made my day!!! The problem is that I manage to do this to myself about once a year, by which time, I've already forgotten how I disabled it the last time. :) So, I'm very happy to know there's a way to just turn this feature off. Re: I hate mouse keys!!!
Hi Donna, Mouse-keys can be toggled on and off by pressing the Option key five times. If your keyboard is getting tired, sometimes the Option key sort of presses multiple times when you have it down which will thus turn your mouse-keys on. The easiest thing to do to fix this issue is to turn off the five presses of the Option key feature. To turn this feature off, go to System Preferences, Accessibility, then select Mouse and racked from the table. Stop interacting with the table and navigate right to the Options button. In the dialog that appears, uncheck the item that talks about toggling Mouse-keys on/off with the Option key. Now, as long as mouse-keys are off, that toggle will not turn them on. The only way you'll be able to turn Mouse-keys on will be to check the box in the Accessibility pane. Later... Mouse Keys in abled
Hi, I turned the Mouse Keys in abled in Universal Access preferences, as it says that I can use the keyboard keys to move the mouse pointer. My apple keyboard doesn't have a numeric keypad, so I use the Fn key along the key commands, but the mouse doesn't work when I try the commands like mouse button: fn-5, Hold mouse button: fn-0 etc. Any idea what is missing here please? I can turn the mouse on/off by pressing the option key 5 times, that's all I can do on it at the moment. Thank you in advance for any assistance. Using Mouse Keys {was Re: Take Control eBooks' September Sale]
Hi Steve, I don't need to use mouse keys to check the boxes on the Take Control site (see my previous post), but here's a link to an old post from the macvisionaries archives: • Re: mouse keys http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries@googlegroups.com/msg64233.html You can skip most of the explanation, and just set up Mouse Keys to turn on and off with by pressing the Option key 5 times quickly under System Preferences Accessibility (used to be Universal Access in earlier version of the OS) under the Mouse Keyboard options, and if you're using Mountain Lion, you can also use Command-Option-F5, I think, to get to the panel to enable or disable Mouse Keys. Make sure to do the verbosity set-up in VoiceOver utility that Anne described. (It's explained in more detail in the linked post). Then you can click on controls using your i key. HTH. Re: Mouse Keys
Hi Michael, Mouse Keys are designed so that people with fine motor control disabilities can perform actions, such as clicking or moving the mouse, with precision. I've only used it with VoiceOver in a few situations. The first is when a physical mouse click with trackpad or cursor is required. The VO-Shift-Space shortcut is a simulated mouse click implemented by software. The VO-Space shortcut is another software defined shortcut that performs the default action -- which could be pressing a button, clicking on link, selecting a menu option, etc. depending on context. There are some instances, especially in situations where applications are not fully accessible or are transitioning in accessibility with VoiceOver, where these kinds of software clicks do not work, and you have to physically click your trackpad or mouse for your click to take effect. In these instances, performing a click with Mouse Keys mode turned on is equivalent to physically clicking with mouse or trackpad. The NumPad Commander keyboard shortcut for a key click, which David Griffith informs me in another post is Control+5 on the numeric keypad in Lion, will also always work as a hardware click. (This used to be just the unmodified 5 key on the numeric keypad of a full-size keyboard in Leopard, but in Snow Leopard and Lion this was switched from Clicks the mouse to Perform action for item, and clicking the mouse required pressing the Control key together with the 5 key on the NumPad. Now that I think about it, the ability to use VO-Shift-Space to double-click on the splitter in mail to hide the Preview pane in the message viewer window also went away when we moved from Leopard to Snow Leopard.) In addition to allowing users to click a mouse or trackpad without moving the position of the mouse pointer, Mouse Keys mode lets you move the mouse pointer position on the screen in pixel increments by using key strokes. So the second circumstance in which I've used Mouse Keys is for instances when I need to move the mouse pointer to locations that VoiceOver doesn't navigate to, in order to click on controls. The most common example of this usage is when trying to deal with flash controls on a web page. VoiceOver can't see these controls, in the sense that you can't use VoiceOver commands to navigate to them, since Adobe's Flash does not comply with Apple's accessibility API. However, if you manage to move your mouse pointer over a flash control independently of using VoiceOver's cursor, because you've turned cursor tracking off (with VO-Shift-F3), VoiceOver can tell you what is under your mouse pointer (with VO-F5, or by checking the box for Speak text under mouse after delay in the Announcements tab of Verbosity in VoiceOver Utility) and will even describe the screen coordinate location of your mouse pointer (VO-F5-F5 or VO-F5-F5-F5). So the way I used to play the Audible audio book sound samples before they changed their web pages from Flash only to HTML 5 versions was by navigating to Sample with VoiceOver, then turning keyboard tracking off, and Mouse Keys on, and moving the mouse pointer 50 pixels to the left of Sample so that the player control was under the mouse pointer. Then I would click to start the sample playing. On extended keyboards, Mouse Keys uses the numeric keypad, with the central 5 key to designate the current position of the mouse. To move the mouse pointer 1 pixel to the left, you press the key the left of the 5 key once, and similarly if you want to move to the right, up, down. or diagonally. You use the nine number keys (1-9, with 5 in the central position), to move your cursor, pixel by pixel. On a laptop keyboard, the keys you use are where the embedded numeric keypad used to be -- surrounding the i key. So j k l was 1 2 3, u i o was 4 5 6, and 7 8 9 (on the top row of number keys) was 7 8 9. To move to the left I tap the u key with Mouse Keys on. To move to the right I tap the o key. And to click my mouse I tap the i key when Mouse Keys are turned on. Note that you can also move your mouse pointer using the trackpad (when TrackPad Commander in turned off) if cursor tracking is turned off. If you have the box checked for Speak text under mouse after delay in the Announcements tab of Verbosity in VoiceOver Utility, you'll also be told what is under the mouse. (You may want to adjust the slider to make the time delay short). This does not require using Mouse Keys at all. In Snow Leopard, we could use this method to navigate to icons for Dropbox, etc. on the status menu bar that VoiceOver didn't see, by moving the mouse pointer using the trackpad along the top edge of the screen, if cursor tracking were turned off. Then you could click on those icons once VoiceOver announced you were on top of them to open the menus. (I used to use Mouse Keys to get a feel for the distance between icons -- usually 30 pixels separation.) I haven't
mouse keys and mouse focus
Has anybody using Lion tried to turn their mouse keys on using the option key five times? I have mine set to do that; but, the mouse keys always turn off right away. Also, in the Universal preferences tab, it's impossible to check the mouse keys on using the radio buttons because the second you do, the mouse keys just toggle back off again. I wonder whether or not this has anything to do with the dificulty we seem to be having pressing control+F8 and then moving the mouse to the special menu at the right end of the menu bar? BTW, any word on when that will be fixed? Thanks. Sincerely, The Constantly Barefooted Ray!!! Now a very proud and happy Mac user!!! Re: mouse keys and mouse focus
I have experienced the same thing. I haven't been able to figure out a way to get the mouse keys to stay on. I've done some research and so far haven't come across a date of when this will be fixed. Re: mouse keys
This allows you to control the mouse using the numeric keypad, I think it uses the regular keyboard on a laptop. Re: mouse keys
Yep. just be sure to turn off num pad commander. I use this function to play the sample on the Audible website. The flash player is not seen by BoiceOver. Learned this trick last night in the Archives. I've had my Mac for three weeks. I feel like I'm at McDonald's with a Mac: I'm loving it! JAWS mouse keys and Fusion
Good afternoon, Slightly off topic, but not really as the problem only occurs when using JAWS in VMWare Fusion on my Macbook. I am able to get JAWS into JAWS Cursor mode (insert + [). But, I cannot perform a JAWS left or right click. Using a Macbook Aluminum. Does anyone know if this is a limitation of Fusion or my Macbook keyboard? How to use mouse keys and Audible.com samples [was Re: how to use audible.com]
Hi Will, We seem to have been crossing posts; see my last reply to find out how to use mouse keys. Briefly: you turn on Mouse Keys in the Universal Access menu under System Preferences, but using the Mouse Trackpad tab. There's a check box option there to let you turn it on/off by pressing the option key 5 times. I check the box to show Universal Access status on the menu bar (this is also available from the Seeing tab for VoiceOver) so if I need to check whether Mouse Keys is on or off I can go to the status menu bar (VO-M twice or Control-F8 and arrow over to Universal Access menu). When you activate mouse keys you move your mouse with key presses. These used to be the arrow keys on the embedded numeric keypad, where 7 8 9 matched the same keys on the top row of the keyboard. The other key mappings are 4 5 6 maps to u i o and 1 2 3 maps to j k l. The 5 in the center of the 3x3 block of numbers is current position. To move your mouse up, down, left, right, or diagonally by one screen pixel you press the key above, below, to the left, right, or diagonally from the current position 5 key. On the keyboard that means you press the key to the left of the i key (or u) to move left, and the key to right (or o) to move right. Up: 8 Down: k Left: u RIght: o and the corresponding diagonal movements: Up and left: 7 Up and right: 9 Down and left: j Down and right: l Mouse keys move 1 pixel in each direction. They're really used for precise mouse positioning, so they're not good for large moves. The advantage is that they give you exact control of moving your cursor in x or y, and if you calibrate the offset once for your computer (such as 49 key presses to the right of the Sample text will be centered on the flash player control) you can just turn them on and count key presses. Remember to turn them off again when you're done. (I do this by pressing option 5 times). If you're browsing the BBC Audiozone, none of the summary page links appear to work, but if you select the link for an individual book the Click to play sample on that page works correctly. Note that both the summary page for the BBC Audiozone and the individual book pages there have a return to Audible link, so I suspect that Audible's design is not the problem. If the site is busy, you might want to try reloading a page (with Command-R), and then checking the links. Incidentally, the Audible.com U.S. site uses flash to play the samples. The workaround for the U.S. site that was posted on the lioncourt.com site last year has to be modified with Audible's recent web page redesign; the Listen text item has been replaced with Sample, and you have to do a mouse keys search by moving to the right of Sample (instead of searching to the left of Listen). The link address that Josh originally posted to the list doesn't work now. Actually, I can't get to the database for the lioncourt.com page at all at this time. I think the link should now be: http://www.lioncourt.com/2008/07/19/play-samples-on-audiblecom-with-voiceover/ If that does not work, look for Mac-cessibility tip #20.
