N800 Power cycles

2009-06-06 Thread Rainer Dorsch
Hello,

my N800 crashed after running navit. During the reboot, the blue bar
completed, then it paused sometime and it rebooted again. This now cycles so
that the N800 is doing nothing else than power cycling.

Is there a better way to fix that than reflashing the device?

Is there a way to find out what the root cause of the problem is?

Can RD mode help to be more verbose during the boot process?

Many thanks,
Rainer

[GSoC 09]Semantic-Based Context-aware Personalized News reader System for Maemo

2009-06-06 Thread FENG GAO
Hello, all:

This is my first report for GSoC 09 project. In the previous two weeks,
I have been working on the semantic module, and finished the basic function
of it and now stil working on test script, modifing the previous code and
trying to integrate the module with gpodder.

Before talking much more about problems in my project, I want to
re-introduce the concept of this module to make things clear . This module
is used to annotate description of each item(like one episode in one
channel) by OpenCalais, then generate a item profile. In the item profile,
it has three data fields.they are type, name, and relevancescore. The type is
the so-called parent class of the name, and the relevancescore is computed
by OpenCalais webservice. After it, user profile which represents user's
interest would be compared with the item profile, then a recommendation
score will be given to the item. The presentation module of a podcast or rss
reader application then can mark an item as a recommendation one according
to the score.

Well, I think now you may have known what the semantic module is. Then I
want to talk about some problems in my project.

The first one is the OpenCalais has a weak capability to annotate
content. It just can gives one-level semantic annotation , but which in my
mind, it should be a N-level semantic annotation. If we have N-level
annotation, then we can not only know Obama is a person, but know Obama
is a politician. The weak one-level annotation make the recommendation
algorithm relatively be meaningless.

The second one is the response time. I have tried to use the semantic
module to process the Linux Outlaws channel's episodes, but I think it
takes too long time than expected to do annotation on the N800. So I'm so
worried about whether uses can accept this.

The third one is until now, the module just simply uses a copy of item
profile to be the user profile to do the recommendation score computation.
It's not good for test, so I'm now working on adding a new class into the
code then make users and developers can use xml file to specify the content
in the user profile. I will submit a new version of code in the next three
days maybe.

I think until now there are just these three problems, and I will try
fix them in next week. I'm now also working on writing a test script for
semantic module and trying to integrate my module into gpodder then we can
see the final effect of this semantic module.

If you are interested in my project, then you can find much more
information on http://garage.maemo.org/projects/newssprite. You can also
check out the code on the svn repository. (I recommend you check out the
code three days later just after I check new version code and test script in
it).

Any comments and suggestion are welcome.Thanks.

Are there any logs which show what went wrong before?

Can I do something to better protect myself against such boot loops?

Upgrading with Application Manager [Fwd: Update conflict with Update All and dependencies]

2009-06-06 Thread Stefan Sayer
Hello,

sorry, don't want to be annoying, but with another update of a software
i package for maemo this problem is still unsolved. In short: How do I
make the update with Application Manager possible of two packages that
depend on an exact version of a library package? I.e. package A version
x.y and package B x.y depend both on package C x.y , but Application
Manager refuses to update both at once (unlike what apt-get upgrade
would do).

Thanks
Stefan

Hello,

I am running across a strange thing with Application manager: Update
all does not seem to work like apt-get upgrade, instead it seems to
update one package after the other. This of course fails if multiple
packages depend on the same version of another package - all other
packages would have to be deinstalled first to be able to update one of
those packages.

I have two application packages that both depend on an exact version of
a library package. Now when I push updates of all three packages to
(extras-devel) repository, in the application manager I see the two
application packages as available updates. The problem is, if I want to
update one, it says Conflicting application packages and Conflict
with application packages: and the other application package with the
old version. While that may be expected behaviour, IMO a clear bug is
that Update all fails with the same - first it says Unable to update
xyz, Conflicting application packages. Continue installing? but if I
click yes, it complains with not being able to install the other package
again.

apt-get upgrade of course works correctly, updating all three at once
('apt-get install anki ankiqt' would work as well i guess). I can not
believe the Application manager to be so stupid on top of such a
powerful package and dependencies system as debian's. Maybe I got the
dependencies wrong?

To illustrate, the dependencies of the old version:
Package: ankiqt
Version: 0.9.9.7.6b-4
Depends: anki (= 0.9.9.7.6b-4), python2.5-qt4-svg

Package: ankimaemi
Version: 0.0.6-8
Depends: anki (= 0.9.9.7.6b-4)

Package: anki
Version: 0.9.9.7.6b-4
Depends: python2.5, python-sqlalchemy ( 0.5.0), python-simplejson (=
2.0.6)

And the new ones:
Package: ankiqt
Version: 0.9.9.7.9-2
Depends: anki (= 0.9.9.7.9-1), python2.5-qt4-svg

Package: ankimaemi
Version: 0.0.7-2
Depends: anki (= 0.9.9.7.9-1)

Package: anki
Version: 0.9.9.7.9-1
Depends: python2.5, python-sqlalchemy ( 0.5.0), python-simplejson (=
2.0.6)

Thanks for any hints how to solve this. I have not found any related
bugs in Settings and maintenance at bugs.maemo.org.

Henrik,

thanks for the quick reply.

When a power cable is connected, the device seems to be running the
operating system in the background. Thus, simply switching the power off
does not reboot the device in that case. If you need to cold boot the
device, the power cable must be disconnected (and sometimes a battery
 also ;).

HmmI was removing the battery several times (that was the only way to stop
the power cycles). But when I inserted the battery again (sometimes after
minutes) and plugged the power cable the N800 started immediately to boot.

I am wondering what I would have done if my battery would have been empty and
I could not boot w/o power cable.

Thanks,
Rainer

Re: [GSoc 09] Barcode Scanner and shopping Assistant - report 1

2009-06-06 Thread Amit Sethi
Really sorry for the screw up there ...

Hi all,

The general idea of the project is an application that will scan barcode
image and than search stores on web and local stores for prices , reviews
etc ..
As part of the project the first thing was to test out maemo-barcode toolkit
. Sadly I was not able to run it on my SBOX . Although I did do some bug
fixes on it . It still didn't seem to work.

We also evaluated some other toolkits on SBOX and zbar seemed to run fine(
http://zbar.sourceforge.net/)

zbar gives us some of the features that we were looking for i.e
1. Almost the same speed of decoding for different types of barcode
2.1D(ean and upc) as well as 2d barcode scanning
3.Python bindings .
So I have *recommended to use zbar *. If there is work required in terms of
image quality perhaps it can be developed as a *seperate independent module
using Image Magick or PIL*

The second part of the project .. ie that of *price comparison* is to be
done using server side scripts.
As a beginning to this i have started adding code to get product title for a
particular barcode.
The reason to use product titles is because we would need to search
many *heterogenous
databases *and I think product titles would make the job easier in this
regard . *Not all databases or systems provide the capability to search by
upc or ean no.

*Their are as far as i can see two methods for price comparison . This part
we have decided should be done in a manner that it is easier for *merchants
to add their feeds/database/other such stuff
  *
For *web stores* we could *create a crawler using Yahoo Boss API *.
Although I would wonder if it can be optimized in such a manner that it is
even able to extract price information and reviews etc

On the side of *local stores and feeds* -
We could have our own specification for the feed .. but this might be too
complicated for small local stores ..
The problem with local stores and feeds would be that they would tend to be
very heterogenous thus we require a search system that is flexible ...
For this I think we should do a full text search(perhaps using pyLucene) on
the databases/feeds we recieve but again question is can we optimize this
kind of search to the level that we can get price info and reviews etc

The next apart of course would be to write the client side for price
comparison and UI

P.S The ideas for price comparison are major thought waves that perhaps
need to be orgainized and understood better. Also please add recommendations
and other such input.
Also although i have experimented a bit with BOSS i have no clue about
pyLucene so please feel free to add warnings about the kind and load of work
involved and *tutorials/links/projects *on the two topics .

Thanks

pyLucene[1] depends on Java, we don't have a good Java support in maemo atm,
so is better search for other alternatives for this job.

Ok, the above looks like a comment of mine :). Actually I didn't
finish this task yet. Once I have done it, I'll report the results
 here.

Fantastico! :)

Currently the state of python packages
and their dependencies is confusing. It would be really great if you
guys had a dependency tree, or some form of canonical list. Perhaps
this page could get fleshed out a little?

 Something like this?

 http://wiki.maemo.org/PyMaemo

Yes. :-)

- They didn't know the auto-builder would let a package go through
  to
extras-devel with dependencies missing.

I think the above two shows that the extras-devel system needs to be
more documented/promoted ?

Which packages got built without their dependencies?

The autobuilder does not check for *runtime* dependencies, only *build
time* ones. This is not a big issue (I think autobuilders from other
distros do the same, but I'm not sure), as long as it is
 documented/promoted enough as Quim suggested.

Build-time dependencies (i.e. build-depends) need to be there for that
package to be built. But the Depends field in the control file should
pull in those packages that are depended upon at runtime.

- Some didn't know where the python-support (= 0.90.0) dependency
actually came from.

This I don't understand. Developers have to have all their
dependencies in order to build the package locally, how would they not
  have all the depdencies?

This can have a lot of reasons, one of them being that they simply
don't have the extras-devel repository on their local sbox
 /etc/apt/sources.list.

And if it is a runtime dependency problem, the build will finish ok,
although the package will not be installable. If this is the case, it
shows yet another QA issue: that the built packages might not have
 been tested for correct installation/removal.

Yes - I agree. This is a quality control issue. The dependency chain
needs to be managed smoothly for users since they should not have to
deal with this.

   * python-mokoui : no idea which package is this. Jeremiah/Niels: can
it be added the your automatic building task?

This package has been sent to the fremantle autobuilder.

I think the original maintainer has said that it should not be
necessary anymore and that the package that broke because of it
will/was fixed (if I remember correctly)

It does not build in fremantle, at least right now. It is called
libmokoui and I am going to try to get the errors fixed.

Thanks for your complete and prompt response Anderson, I appreciate it.
