Hi,

there should be an xterm application available from extras repository
and also in the application catalogue, e.g. this one:

I am a long time linux user and just got my hands on my n800.

How do I get to a command line?

I put the n800 in red pill mode. I can see that I have busy-box
installed already but I don't see how to get to it.

I attempted to install bash but I get a message that there is an
application conflict.

2007-07-10 Thread Jakub.Pavelek
Hi,

Pretty much on spot. No silent updates. For critical updates a new
flashable image would be released. Obviously this is far from end-user's
optimal solution and a better solution is in the works but not deployed
yet.

the app manager will eventually update and you will see it

I am not sure what you mean by standard operations. I want access to standard
linux command line utilities.

When going through the application manager's list of installed applications, I
don't see osso-xterm, and when going through the list of installable
applications I also don't see osso-xterm. I have repository.maemo.org entered
as one of my catalogues.

Re: N800 Leather Case

2007-07-10 Thread Mike Klein
A funny thing I've noticed about the leather cases (and prob' most cases
in general) is none EVER fit perfectly.

On all leather cases I've used for N800 (tested like 4) subtle
imperfections always cause buttons to not exactly be lined up or exposed
fully...not a killer but a flaw nonetheless.

Even a Toshiba laptop bag supposedly MADE for my laptop is a complete
bitch to fit the damn laptop in...sigh. Does anybody use what they create?!?

Get an x-acto and be prepared to make minor cuts to expose buttons
better, etc. Sometimes they cover up with TOO much leather in spots.

Nice black leather? with white stitching and all ports/buttons are
visible. Case flap can even be flipped around to make it stand on desk
without resorting to freeing stand on n800 itself.

Just search on nokie leather and black on ebay and you'll find them.
Sellers are prompt and product is quality.

I want cases to satisfy two requirements most of the time: ruggedizes
 device AND allows in-case usage.

 For when I'm fishing/kayaking I have a nice AquaPac and I bought a
neoprene neck strap/lanyard system...can boogie while I'm paddling so
 it's quite effective...now I just need a2dp.

Re: [Fwd: Re: weird? problem with memory reporting after firmware upgrade]

2007-07-10 Thread Mike Klein
I would doubt any updates are silent.

These kinds of updates must be visible to end user so I would assume
AppManager...but this only shows apps needing updating...not low level
cruft.

So perhaps user would need to be instructed to switch to red pill mode
temporarily to get a certain lib or whatnot.

Then again nokia could certainly pkg fixes as a 1st class app and not
require red pill...which is what they would prob' have to do for ease of
use in general. For critical updates I would have to assume user
wouldn't need red pill.

I am not most knowledgeable on this matter though...speculation.

Re: kind of off-topic, but not completely: some questions about the N800

2007-07-10 Thread Dr . Nicholas Shaw

During the day, while at the office, I leave my N800 on and plugged in.  On some occasions it's on and plugged in 7x24.  I've been running it this way since I bought it in January 8.  I've had no problems and the battery life is excellent.
I generally get an easy 5-6 hours.  Of course, I also turn my display brightness down very low when I'm unable to charge for whatever reason.

Nick.

I purchased a CHEAP (I think $10 or $15) battery from eBay that was
nokia n800 compatible...on full charge I get at best 4 hours rather than
7 of nokia standard. Given it was so cheap this isn't a big deal.

I've found best solution is to use cigarette lighter to power either an
inverter (some come with usb plus 1 or 2 3-prong ac) or usb hub. Since
N800 isn't chargeable via usb (sigh) you need to get a converter on web
which turns usb (full) into mini-usb plus the nokia n800 power plug.
It's a tiny dongle.

Mike,

how does Nokia incorporate/distribute bug fixes in between releases like
the one which just occurred?

Are bug fixes silently downloaded/installed automatically or does the
user have to take some action to install them, for example, by means of
a special repository for Nokia bug fixes? How can I tell if I am getting
the bug fixes in the Nokia firmware?

Best Regards,

Yes there is ...sorta. The phone Nokia 6103 and the n800 use the same
charger. I know because I have this phone (it does gprs networking ) So
the cigarette lighter charger available online or at t-mobile for this phone
works fine with my n800 and the n770 of my wife.

I updated bug descr to indicate latest firmware still has problem...it
seems fix was applied 2 days before release of firmware (something like
that) so I doubt it is in.

Hopefully this is visual only and doesn't cause errors when you get

Re: https client auth failing after firmware upgrade?

2007-07-10 Thread Mike Klein
I didn't restore from backup after firmware upgrade...but yes I tried
clearing all stored data in opera...no go.

Made sure "redirect" was checked in addition to ssl2...tried all combos
and get same results.

CertMgr definitelys shows 2 good (unexpired) user certs signed by CA
name is shows up in my trust store. My web server is DEFINITELY
returning a server cert signed by this CA.

Alas there is no "Tools->Log" in opera ui as there is for
ApplicationManager.

Do we even have centralized logging on n800? I notice /var/logs is
basically empty...I realize memory is limited...but an
aggresive log rotation policy should solve this I would think.

Hi Ryan!
Thanks again for taking this on. This really helps me. On to the
peculiarities of my system, opensuse 10.2. Under the heading:

Set up passwordless logon to N800 SSH

3. Let's test to make sure this works. Run ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED] - it
should log you on and give you a busybox prompt without asking for a
password. If this worked, you're golden, move on. If not, well, I'm not
sure what the deal is. Make sure /home/user/.ssh/ exists on the n800,
maybe.

I had to create the directory /home/user/.ssh and I think (yeah, I know)
the file /home/user/.ssh/id_dsa.pub with vi.

Under the heading:
Prerequisites For Sync Setup:

I'm getting the necessary files from the repository here
.
This was linked from which has links
for several prebuilt distros as well as several other things. I'm currently
gathering the correct files as you listed. I wanted to get completely through
the process before I answered, but this might help someone in my situation.

Thanks Florian, Graham, Ryan, Nils, and all the other developers!

The binary has been downloaded quite often without any complaints or bug
reports about contact syncing, but also very little other feedback. So
either a) people didn't get it to work and are afraid of asking for help
or b) it just works. Of course I prefer the second interpretation...

One user indeed said that contacts worked fine for him whereas he
couldn't get calendar syncs to work [1]. This is the known problem with
the EDS-DBus calendar backend. There are no news about that as far as I
know.

I am about to release 0.6 after testing on my Nokia 770 with the
original IT OS2006. My plan is to compile for the official OS so that it
runs on that and all more recent releases, but because recent OpenedHand
packages of "Dates" and "Contacts" are only available for Bora/OS2007 I
might reflash my Nokia 770 with the hacker edition and stop testing with
OS2006. Is this what all the power users have done already anyway or are
there users left who would prefer my testing on a genuine OS2006?

Flaky connection after upgrade

2007-07-10 Thread Duncan MacCallum
HI,
Previous ver used to give rock solid wifi connection.
However after latest firmware upgrade now find connection speeds slow
and that behind a Belkin preN router connected to 20mb cable
connection.
Skype loads but unable to activate calls. Web browsing can at time be
painfully slow in fact at time notice little difference between wifi
and gprs connection
Connection to my wifi router shows at max but something not getting through...
Unfortunately very much an end user with no previous on linux so
floundering somewhat.
Good point is sometimes all is well, but not often enough.
Just wondering if other are having same problems afters recent upgrade.

Cheers

I'm seeing probably the same issue. I'm having problem e.g. with

"This site has sent an untrusted certificate

"Unable to complete secure transaction

weird? problem with memory reporting after firmware upgrade

2007-07-10 Thread Mike Klein
After reflashing I install my usual 1st class apps: ror, metasploit,
geomapper?, solitaire, j2me, osgi, claws and a few network utils not
with firmware.

My memory usage was at 70% after loading all this stuff per control
panel. I recalled thinking this was good as I had put damn near
everything I wanted and still had breathing room.

I check this morning memory settings and I see I'm at 27% usage?!?

Something weird appears to be going on...also it would appear memory
stats/totals don't add up.

Anybody else seeing this or is my math bad (or I'm otherwuise consfused).

I did NOT restore backup after firmware upgrade and only use mmc1 for
backups and mmc2 for music/videos.

thanks in advance,

Re: N800 Leather Case

2007-07-10 Thread Mike Klein
Yeah...a week after I ordered mine I saw they removed a "button" and now
top flap is magnetic. However with this version I don't think you can
bend flap back and make it "stick" for use as stand...did they put
another magnet on back for this?

My "primary" carry for N800 and mini-bt keyboard (cc-sized...forget
manuf.) is an "under arm" holster with two pockets (one for n800 and
other for keyboard or my 8525/hermes).

Under arm holster is hot as it NEVER gets in the way...but is uber
geeky...but works. During 4th of july in hot sun...I didn't want holster
under "naked" armpit for obvious reasons. So I switched to unit in
AquaPac if I'm near the water or just have unit on neck strap. I feared
in 110 temps that unit in leather case might be a tad much.

I detest cases which snap to belt as often getting in and out of car or
chair the damn things pop off or get hit.

Re: N800 Leather Case

2007-07-10 Thread Ryan Pavlik
BoxWave has both a rubberized N800 skin and a leather case - both of
which allow use with the case on. I have the leather one and it is nice
- even has a magnetically-closed flap to allow the stand to open/be used
with the case on.

Apparently the official Nokia case is due in 2-3 weeks.

 I submitted the following bug:
 https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1638
"The camera app in the latest software, while behaving MUCH BETTER
for taking
still pictures, no longer seems to support recording movies. If this
feature is
being deleted for some reason it would be nice if it were noted
somewhere, like
 in the camera help."
 I received the following reply:
 RESOLVED INVALID:
Camera application did not support video before and does not support
it now.
It's just for taking still pictures.
What the FSCK? The camera application MOST CERTAINLY DID support
taking
movies (albeit at a very low resolution) in the 2006 release.
Yeah, I brought this up a while back, but no one has responded to
ANY of these items. :( - Original Message -

Hi,

I sent a couple of these already, but got no response. Now, I have a
new issue (which is at the bottom).

- Original Message -
Subject: Camera v2.9 loses video functionality?!

Has anyone noticed that the latest version of the Nokia Camera app
doesn't have the video option anymore?

- Original Message -
Subject: Arg! My backup doesn't work!!!
 Date: 07/06/2007 8:05 pm
Ok, so, I made my bsckup before flashing the new firmware... I
checked the
backup directory on the MMC -- everything appeared ok (although, I
didn't
look any "deeper"). Now, after upgrading, the Backup/Restore app
doesn't see
the backup. So, I checked the contents of my backup.metadata file
and, guess
what... It's completely blank (no XML data, nothing).
Now, my question is... What can I do?

NEW...

The Application Manager crashed while trying to install Python 2.5.
Actually, it has crashed on a few different occasions since
upgrading, but not like this time. This time, my desktop graphics
didn't redraw properly and the touch screen didn't work. Upon
restart, the Nokia Logo/Status Bar did it's thing, but then froze
when the Status Bar got to the end of the load animation. The startup
sound played (which usually plays during the "hands" graphic, but
nothing actually happened onscreen -- it is still on the Nokia Logo.
The N800 still goes into power save mode if I leave it alone -- and
comes back on when I tap the screen -- but it's just frozen on the
Nokia Logo.

I guess I'm going to need to reflash again. :(

Has anyone else experience any of these (three) items?

Thanks,

Tim

Re: recommended SD card for N800

I didn't experience filesystem or hardware related issues with my
SD-cards (opposed to MMC-cards, where the filesystem gets corrupted
frequently on N770 and N800, any firmware version) using
RX-34_2007SE_4.2007.26-8_PR_MR0.

My problem is the metalayer-crawler eating up the CPU resources (as
discussed here: https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=978).

The metalayer-crawler process is running with a niceness of 19 and I
applied a custom path. This is the command line (as listed by htop):

/usr/bin/metalayer-crawler -F -c
/home/user/MyDocs/.video,/home/user/MyDocs/.sounds,/home/user/MyDocs/.images

Nevertheless metalayer-crawler seems to block the touch-screen almost
completely for about 10 minutes after system startup.

The filesystem on my card is OK, neither the high niceness nor the
custom path applied to metalayer-crawler affects the touch-screen issue
in a positive way.

The only fix which works for me is to switch off metalayer-crawler
completely (I don't care about the mediaplayer).

Re: OpenSSH on OS 2006 repository problem?

2007-07-10 Thread Piotr Zagorowski
If you have ssh server and xterm installed, you can:
- run xterm
- ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED]
- cp /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.oryg
- add all repositories you want or copy from internet ready file
- or if you have already "extended" version: cp
/etc/apt/sources.list."extended" /etc/apt/sources.list
- apt-get update
Usually if something is wrong with repositories sites/files/keys it
shows some error and it helps with further investigation.

I have run into this problem before and have found it is best to just
periodically purge all but the most "official-looking" repositories I
have in the Application Manager. This is annoying, as then I have to
go back and find and re-enter the repositories that I need.

Thank you Colin, this pretty much points me to all the confifguration
settings I could not find. Synchronization seems to work just right,
and I am sure I'll be able to create a local store for the outbound
messages.

One thing I will have to figure out is turning off the Claws-mail
alerts, since even in offline/disconnected mode, it seems to want to
connect to the IMAP server about every couple minutes or so, which is
annoying.

Thank you for the great response!

I ran into one problem because I had the following in my application
catalog

Catalog name: Maemo
Web address:http://repository.maemo.org
Distribution: bora
Components: free non-free extras
  ^^

The problem was that extras is a non-existent component in
repository.maemo.org. Previous versions of the firmware would just
ignore the non-existent component.

The latest version seems to abort the "apt-get update" process and
leave you with the old package information --- for all catalogs, not
just the one with the bogus extra component.

I figured this out by eliminating all non-essential categories until
the package information was getting properly updated, and then I was
able to figure out that the problem was the extra, non-existent
component. Once I eliminated that, I was able to install skype,
openssh, etc.

Don't know if this is the problem you ran into, but maybe it will help
some others

WTF!?! "Camera did not support taking movies"?

2007-07-10 Thread David Hagood
I submitted the following bug:

https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1638

"The camera app in the latest software, while behaving MUCH BETTER for taking
still pictures, no longer seems to support recording movies. If this feature is
being deleted for some reason it would be nice if it were noted somewhere, like
in the camera help."

I received the following reply:

RESOLVED INVALID:
Camera application did not support video before and does not support it now.
It's just for taking still pictures.

What the FSCK? The camera application MOST CERTAINLY DID support taking
movies (albeit at a very low resolution) in the 2006 release.
