All,

I seem to be having a problem getting the Access Corp www site to send

several email addresses and two different email service providers but I
don't seem to get a response. Has anyone else had this problem. Here is

I have USB host!

2007-11-27 Thread James Sparenberg
Ok. On OS2008 I did the following.

1. Got a femail to femail connector so I can attach keyboard cable to
the IT USB cable.

2. ran this command in a term window (where # is teh command prompt)
as root.

   # echo "host" > /sys/devices/platform/musb_hdrc/mode

3. plugged in the keyboard.

4. Ignored complaints about unsupported device and began to type and
giggle like a madman *grin*.

NOTE: I'm in R&D mode not sure if this works outside of this mode
yet.

PS. I also connected a pen drive... It claimed the device was
ussuported then ... it opened the file manager mounted the device and
showed me the files

In my case, it worked with my Jabra 8010 stereo headset in that I
could hear mono sound from the SCO profile through both speakers. But
full A2DP sterso sound is not quite working out of the box yet. The
pieces are appearently there but not enabled without some degree of
hackery. I had the A2DP working with OS2007 with Kagu so I would
imagine that it would be possible with OS2008 too but I haven't gotten
to looking up how to do it yet.

This refers to GPE-Calendar, with the LCARS theme on the N800, which
displays appointments in white on yellow instead of the usual black on
yellow. The consensus seems to be that GPE-Calendar is referencing the
colours in a way which picks up defaults (or fails to pick up defaults)
that results in unreadability.

Or, of course, it may be LCARS that is at fault.

OS2008-beta1

2007-11-27 Thread James Sparenberg
The only gotcha's I'm finding are,

1. xterm is kinda borked. You can only change background color via
the gui now and they moved the "text buttons" from the right to the
bottom which means that if you are using the keyboard and editing a
file it's barely usable in that 60% of the screen is now taken up by
something other than the term window.

2. There are a lot of programs that are in the repositories but can't
install due to missing libs. Still tracking down the repository
chain of events (for example vncviewer, rdesktop etc)

Still working my way through all of this so that I can be sure that a
bug is a bug before filing.

Real nice job indeed! Everything feels smooth on my N800 with
RX-34_2008SE_1.2007.44-4 even scrolling graphic heavy photoblog entries
like:

http://www.mamicha.org/blog/index.php?post/2007/11/13/La-rigole-de-la-montagne

Thumb can be used consistently everywhere to navigate without going
to the stylus and that's really great. The PDF reader also benefits
from this with easy thumb next and previous page in full screen mode.

I tested my SU-8W bluetooth keyboard and it worked like for
all other previous versions. My globalsat BT-359 bluetooth GPS too with
the experimental port of maemo mapper 2 from here:

http://people.debian.org/~tschmidt/maemo/chinook/

(Gnuite will do an official OS2008 port in the coming weeks)

The real news for me is that my Logitech Bluetooth Mobile Freedom
headset did pair with my N800 (which said profile: HSP) and both
sound/music AND recording with maemo recorder worked. Gizmo/SIP worked
with the bluetooth headset too. I don't use Skype but I don't
see a reason why it should not work too :).

Thanks Nokia!

The firmware is available at the usual spot on Nokia's site ... it is
just a painfully slow download and a much bigger firmware (130 MB vs
90 MB) so someone put up a torrent.

>From the announcement, this version of OS2008 is a beta and for early
adopters who are tolerant of rough edges and are willing to report
them. If you want something rock solid and officially supported by the
Nokia help line, I think you have to wait until the 15th of Dec or so.

Having said that, other than the fact that not all the extra apps are
available for it yet, OS2008 has been working quite well for me.

Like Jonathan said ... It is my impression that it is a little from
column A and a little from column B.

The hardware that the tablets use allow you to balance power
consumption with speed. Now that they are bringing power consumption
down with smarter use of cpu usage, bluetooth and wifi, they can
afford to bump up the cpu power to keep the same expected battery
life. With my usage, I haven't noticed any effect on battery life but
there is a huge difference in speed.

Correction, since I did more tests :
- you can't use symlinks from one card to another
- fortunately, you can move the "map" directory from the internal card
to the external card and Maps application will use external card by
default.

Unfortunately, even with this change, there seems to be a problem on the
server side which is unable to sent the entire data (or something like
that).

I believe the "limiter" has been removed and the N800 can now use the
full CPU. OS2008 has some efficiencies which let the CPU be used as
needed to maximize both performance and battery life... much more so
than in the previous editions.

Bug in Maps application

2007-11-27 Thread Frédéric Crozat
Hi,

according to Wayfinder website
http://www.wayfinder.com/?id=5365&lang=en-US Nokia is supposed to
support "Maps" application shipped with IT2008.

Unfortunately, there is no such component in Maemo bugzilla ATM.

Until this is fixed, here is a nice bug report for Maps application :
-this application saves its maps data downloaded to the internal memory
card (I'm speaking about n800) but it does check if there is enough free
space on it while downloading, which cause the download progress bar to
get stuck at one value and never go beyond (and of course, there is no
"no space available" warning.
-you can't change the default memory card used by this application. This
is problematic : for instance, I have a 128MB internal memory card and a
2GB external memory card and I can't download France maps (300MB),
unless I use symlinks from one card to another.

There are a few quirks but I agree. With OS2008 it is like a whole new
(and better) device.
Everything is blazing fast compared to OS2007 and there doesn't seem
to be any glaring brokenness.
A little bit of overclocking goes a long way :]

The new transparent UI looks great and dragging things around on the
desktop is a breeze.
Photo viewing (with automatic aspect portrait/landscape adjustment) is snappy.
Much smoother media/flash viewing.
Much more standard infrastructure so that you can cross-compile easier.
I love rtcomm and how it integrates all the IM/VoIP under one app.
The mozilla-based browser works very well.

Pretty spectacular guys ... well worth the wait.
Two thumbs up!

I'll keep digging and bugzilla things as I find them ... but it is not
easy work anymore ;]

dual boot with 2007 from device and 2008 from MMC - possible?

2007-11-27 Thread Piotr Zagorowski
Hi,

I've successfully done this:

http://maemo.org/community/wiki/howto_easily_boot_from_mmc_card/

Now, I'd like to test/adjust/play with new OS2008 beta.
My question is: can I use dual boot, one from n800 device with OS2008 and
one from MMC card with existing (I mean currently used, highly customised
etc) OS2007?
If so, will procedure from existing how-to work? I believe I will do some
test anyway, but first would like to ask has someone tried.

thanks

OS2008 on n800 - Nice Job

2007-11-27 Thread nick loeve
Hello,

Been playing with the beta. Looks awesome!

Great work... the changes to make the GUI fit the form factor are very
very nice...

The development of the GUI over the OS releases would be a good case
study for some Interaction/UI students. :)

Cheers

It isn't available yet for IT2008/n800.

Same for other Nokia projects like VideoCenter or Camera :(

Maybe the beta for n800 was not only for contributor developpers after
all ;)

FM radio on N800 running OS2008?

2007-11-27 Thread Laurent MARTIN

Hi!
Now that OS2008 is officially available for our N800 (even if it's a
beta, thanks to people at Maemo and Nokia!), could anyone here let me
know whether or not the FM radio applet is available and working on
OS2008 running on the N800?

TIA. I use it every day, so...
