I looked at that & psp cases, amongst other options. The notebook
deal from Target was the best fit I ran into with about a half inch
of excess in width or length. Plus it doesn't look like a game case
that some bozo might want to steal.

However the notebook dealy not big enough for a
charger or usb cable. I just swap out the card for transfers and plug
it into the car charger away from the house while in the case, if the
charge runs down -- which is rare.

So you just jump on the Nokia-train of not supporting any hardware that
isn't manufactured any more? (even if it isn't really a hardware-issue,
but only a software-issue...) -> That's really pitty! Makes me not want

ATARASHI - n800 optimized ezine is out!

2007-12-19 Thread Carlos Pinto
Hi Folks,
as January will be very busy for me, i thought to publish the first issue
of my "new-media lifestyle" ezine in 800x480 format not just next month,
but now.

This is what you get: 66 pages presenting some new gadgest, new software,
new wallpapers, new websites that fit on your n770, n800 and n810.

You can read the ezine online or download it as ZIP file and then open
it through your browser.
The link is http://www.cyberholic.de/atarashi

To answer a few questions, that already have been posted to me:

Q: Why is it in Flash and not as PDF?
A: Because it has the so called Page-Flip effect and in future issues
will have Video and mp3 implemented.

Q: Can i view it with my 770?
A: I have been informed today that it needs the Flash 9.x Plugin.

If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to ask me.

Hope you like it and thanks for your time,
Carlos

My ruggedizing solution finding a smallish zippered $6 day planner
like deal at Target by Franklin-Coveys #365. Fits in a large pocket.
Finds a easy home in my brief case/day pack.

* It holds the n800 real snuggly, with cushioning in every dimension,
comes with a small pen, a pad of paper which I divided in half to make a
little more room, and a few slots for business/credit cards and some $.

* It cushions drops quite well.
* Google up some screen protectors. The case protects the screen well
if you put the screen on the paper pad side of the case, but you'll
want to protect the screen from stylus scratches.
* You can open the zipper on one end to charge the device in the case.
* The case is snug enough of a fit to not
allow the n800 to slip out an unzipped end.
* There's just enough spare room for the ear piece.
* For quick access, when you put the n800 in the case, lock the touch
screen and keys. Unlocking is much quicker than booting up and saves
battery time over just leaving it on.

Any who, that's worked for me. I'm sure there's other solutions to
ruggedizing use.

The flasher does some basic validation. But it's better to use only official
images from Nokia or Maemo.

Is it possible to ruggedize the N800? I've already destroyed several

general information and questions.

http://maemo.org and there's really only one standard UI library,
which is a modified form of GTK called "Hildon"

No, you can't brick it (AFAIK) with a bad kernel; I've gotten it to a
state where the kernel wouldn't boot it but then the "flasher" utility
you use to install updates or rescue yourself can always restore a
broken kernel, using the one included in a standard OS image published
on maemo.org

Do not wait, go and buy one of the silicone "skins" sold for it. They
make it very slightly larger and the leg to prop it up will not come
out when it's on but it will make it virtually impossible to slide out
of your pocket. I got mine off of eBay for around $3.00 plus $4.00
for shipping. Here's an example (I believe this is similar or
identical to what I bought):
http://cgi.ebay.com/Nokia-800-N800-Silicone-Silicon-Skin-Case-Tube-Black_W0QQitemZ320192302320QQihZ011QQcategoryZ20367QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem?_trksid=p1638.m118

Have fun, and make sure you install OpenSSH server first thing to make
installation of packages and generally mucking around a lot easier!

starting up.

2007-12-19 Thread hendrik
I've just ordered my first N800, and it should arrive in a few days.
I've read this list enough to know that it will do the things I want it
to do (and more) once I write a few minor applications for it. I've
been programming since the 60's, am a long-time Unix and emacs user, and
am currently using Debian on several machines. (I've started writing
the crucial minor applications on a Debian system).

My questions are:

Where do I go to get started as an end-user of the N800?

Where do I go to get started as a programmer on the N800? What's the
recommended UI library?

Software repositories for the N800 seem to be scattered among many
sites. Where should I look? Is there an index somewhere?

Is it possible to brick the N800 by flashing with a bad kernel? Or
does the N800 have a nonreflashable flasher?

Is it possible to ruggedize the N800? I've already destroyed several
Nokia cell phones and a Palm pilot by letting them drop out of
my pocket onto the floor when I bend over. (My Palm is still limping
along with gratuitous blobs of orange pixels and uneven backlighting
after several falls. Kudos to the manufacturer!)

Inside the process causing this issue, from the code? Just close
the files (if the code still retains their FD or FILE pointer).

If you just want to get more file descriptors to the system, either kill
the offending process or echo a larger number to /proc/sys/fs/file-max.
(it can be increased at runtime)

To get the already running processes to re-load the (graphics) files
they couldn't get earlier, you might need to restart them.
