maemo.org Bugday: Dec 15th, 18:00-03:00 UTC

2009-12-07 Thread Andre Klapper
Heja,

I'm proudly announcing the first maemo.org Bugday:

Tuesday, Dec 15th, 18:00-03:00 UTC[1]
   in #maemo-bugs on Freenode IRC

This is a nice way to get involved if you are a fan of the Maemo
platform and the N900, but cannot or do not want to write code for
example.

Bugdays are about hanging out together on IRC, triaging/discussing some
reports in maemo.org Bugzilla, and introducing new people into triaging.
No technical knowledge needed, no obligations. So, step by and say hello
to the Bugsquad[2]. :-)

Re[2]: maemo-mapper crashing

Mine was crashing occasionally when downloading maps also.
One time Maemo rebooted. That must have corrupted the database
file because after that it couldn't read/write it. So I started
a new database and it's been fine ever since. My database was
fairly large, 1.1G, so that might have been part of the problem.

Submitting a bug report doesn't require any Linux/n810 savy. It
more like web surfing. Just got the garage page and create an
account.
https://garage.maemo.org/account/login.php
Then at the top, search for "maemo-mapper".
Once at the mapper page, click on "Tracker" on one of the
menu bars.
On the tracker page, click on "Bugs" line.
Once on the bug list page, click "Submit New" at the top and
then fill in the form.

Put as much detail and information as you can.

-Mike

N900 Questions from a new user

2009-12-07 Thread Tim Ashman
I just received my n900 over the weekend and have been playing around with it.
Like most new devices some things are better, some seem worse. I thought I'd
ask the group a couple of questions that I have to see if anything can be
changed.

1. GPS/Maps seems to suck. First I don't have a phone data plan and I'm not
getting one. WiFi for me. So when I turn on GPS I leave the Assisted part
off (network) I can not ever get the gps to actually lock. I've left it on
for hours without touching it and it never locks.

Also when I start up the maps app it asks me for a wifi connection and I get a
little downloading data indication. I have to cancel this not once but
several times before the app gives up and really thinks I don't want to use
data, or maybe it isn't available.

So, first what is up with the GPS does it even work without the network
connection.

Second, it appears that once again nokia has screwed the pooch on the Map app,
I would like to know if mapper ala (n810) is going to be available or is
already.

2. Camera Flash - When I take a picture using the flash the left half on the
picture is always noticeably brighter to the point that the picture looks
like crap. I've tried this several different times in different lighting
conditions with various results but everytime I can see the problem and it
makes the flash unusable. Is something wrong with my unit or is this just
how it is.

3. Contact Lookup using keyboard - So you can begin typing a contacts name
from any desktop and the contacts app will popup and narrow down your name,
works great the first time. However the second time from any desktop nothing
will happen. I've figured out that the first time this happens the system
opens the contact list but never closes it. It the contact app is open then
this feature doesn't work. So I've been having to close the contacts app
myself everytime so that this feature works. Is this the intended
functionality or a bug.

That is all for now. I'm sure I will have more later.

thank you

tim

It is there - I have it installed from extras-devel repo. A bit flakey
right now, but quite usable already.

Camera never actually left me disappointed - it does very good even in
darkness. Maybe I did not expect too much from it, but nothing like
above.

Works for me. If contact list is open but on bg, it switches to
Contacts app. If a contact is selected in the latter, the feature won't
work but I find that reasonable, that means that I havent' finished
with that contact. If Contact list is closed, it reappears.

But I have 41-10 so maybe a regression.

Contact imports

2009-12-07 Thread Luis Listas
Hello

I was wondering if there was an easy way to migrate all contacts and
calendar entries from Windows Mobile 5.0 to Maemo 5. Can you suggest any
paths?

Thanks,

Known issue: https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5337

It has been suggested (on the forum, I think) that this is related to
the silver finish around the kickstand, but so far I have not seen
anything so terrible as to discard the picture.

Thank you, I'll wait for the update.

Hmm, I just tried taking a couple of pictures to show you, and it worked
fine... Maybe I just did something wrong the first time.

I tried this again. this time I was able to repeat two lookups without
closing. Maybe like you suggested I hadn't selected the first contact or
used it. I'll keep playing with it maybe I will come up with a repeatable
process.

Can´t believe N900 doesn´t support 850/1900 UMTS.. .

2009-12-07 Thread Fernando Cassia
Sheesh, I was ready to order the N900 but then I found it only supports
WCDMA at 900-1800-2100.
Down here in Argentina 3G uses 850 and 1900 Mhz.

Was it too difficult for Nokia to include worldwide 3G compatibility?
Oh well...

Re: Contact imports

2009-12-07 Thread Martin Grimme
Hi,

I can only speak of migrating contacts from Android, and that was as
easy as exporting as .vcf from GMail and importing into the Maemo
addressbook.
So if your WinMo can export .vcf it should be quite easy.
