RE: Fwd: N900 is hot when charged & sucks battery life after updatingto PR1.2

2010-06-08 Thread Aldon Hynes
How hot is it?

I've started running Kernel Power which I really like.
http://wiki.maemo.org/Kernel_Power

Mostly because it gives me the ability to use IPv6. However, one of the
other features it provides is information about the battery.

Specifically, if you run
modprobe bq27x00_battery
it will give you access to data about the battery, including capacity,
voltage_now, current_now and temp

It seems like this might be useful in understanding what is going on with
the battery, if it has been damaged, etc.

For example, right now, my battery is reporting:

POWER_SUPPLY_VOLTAGE_NOW=3979
POWER_SUPPLY_CURRENT_NOW=789
POWER_SUPPLY_CAPACITY=83
POWER_SUPPLY_TEMP=25

Yesterday, when I had drained it, the POWER_SUPPLY_TEMP climbed to 40.

I'm curious about what other people are seeing for these numbers, as well as
what the acceptable ranges should be.

Anyone else running Kernel_Power and care to report on the status of their
batteries?

Search "wayfinder" or "navicore" at talk.maemo.org forums, there are
many threads about it. Apparently licenses were changed to 3 years
expiry when Wayfinder was sold, and they have since effectively gone
out of business, so your only apparent option is to find some
workaround to the license (decide for yourself if it is moral or
legal) or use another program like MaemoMapper.

Hi,

ext khalid khan wrote:

Strangely you had multiple MEM & CPU lines, did you try
to paste the output multiple times from a running "top"
program?

This output would also indicate that you did some extra
activity (hald, maemo-xinput & pulseaudio are active)
while top was monitoring the device:

CPU: 32.0% usr 12.7% sys 0.0% nice 54.9% idle 0.0% io 0.
Load average: 0.87 0.57 0.39
PID PPID USER STAT RSS %MEM %CPU COMMAND
 2853 969 user R10296 4.1 16.2 /usr/bin/osso-xter
  797 659 root S < 16324 6.6 14.6 /usr/bin/Xorg -log
 1091 969 user S10484 4.2 8.2 /usr/bin/hildon-de
  746 1 pulseS < 5016 2.0 2.3 /usr/bin/pulseaudi
  842 769 root S 912 0.3 0.7 hald-addon-input:
 1083 969 user S12560 5.1 0.5 /usr/bin/hildon-st
 2857 2855 user R 736 0.3 0.5 top
   10 2 root SW 0 0.0 0.5 [omap2_mcspi]
  716 659 root S < 2244 0.9 0.3 /sbin/mce --force-
  928 1 user S 2384 0.9 0.2 /usr/bin/maemo-xin
-

It's better if you do it like this:
1. start "top"
2. wait 10-15 secs for things to settle down
3. press "q" to quit "top"
4. tap the arrow icon to change into terminal's
   copy paste selection mode
5. copy top output

step 3 above would make sure that your own copy-paste
activity doesn't anymore change what top shows.

Anyway, at least the above "top" output doesn't show any process
using all the CPU constantly. Battery life can still be ruined
by processes that use even a small amount of CPU, *if* they do it
constantly (also when user isn't interacting with the device)
though.

Another reason for battery drain can be networking related
issues (processes that talk to network too often, don't handle
network disconnects/re-connects properly etc).

> Can over charging cause battery drain in 7-11 hrs?

Device should be protecting itself from over charging. Once
the battery is full, it stops charging and waits until battery
charge has dropped a certain amount until it start charging
again.

Btw. Charging always warms the device (as does using the device).
Is the warming somehow exceptional after the PR1.2 update?

mafw-grilo-source available

2010-06-08 Thread Xabier Rodriguez Calvar
I just uploaded a version of mafw-grilo-source that can be installed
from the Fremantle App Manager in the N900.

Grilo: http://live.gnome.org/Grilo . Grilo is a framework to provide
centralized access to different multimedia sources. Currently, in
Fremantle, it supports Youtube, filesystem, Jamendo and Shoutcast.

MAFW: is the multimedia application framework used to build the
Fremantle Media player.

Now that https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9361 is fixed in
Fremantle 1.2, we can enjoy third party plugins in the official media
player and mafw-grilo-source is an example using grilo and therefore,
providing browsing Youtube, filesystem, Jamendo and Shoutcast.

Enjoy it!

You get bug fixes for a year or two, but that's different than porting a
whole new software release. Or do you get new user interfaces for other
N series phones?

Yes. It's called maintenance, fixing of nasty bugs. Not rewriting the
whole UI.

If that would be the case, Nokia would be very disappointed by these

Maemo/MeeGo is based on open-source and free software, yes, but most of
this free software is written by companies, such as Nokia, not by
teenage geeks with shiny foreheads. This is because most of the work is
boring, endless debugging stuff and no-one wants to do it for free :)

Pressing 'q' quits it. See http://linux.die.net/man/1/top

Please tell us which ones are taking the CPU and we tell you if you can
kill them or what you should do. You cannot just blindly kill stuff and
expect the device to still work.

Re: how to update Nokia N810 to maemo 5

2010-06-08 Thread Samer Azmy
what is the life cycle of Nokia Nx series ? how many years ?!
Can you compare it to the rest of the hardware manufactures ?

can you compare to other Nokia mobile phones ?

it seems that Nokia creates such hardware and make it for geeks to have
kinda of free R&D research community, imagining that geeks do not care about
money, they just care about the toy/gadget

I still appreciate that some1 from nokia gets into this discussion LOL

please when you say Meego is supported on N900, send references and links

kind regards

I've been around since the Nokia 770, so you don't need to tell me...
Technology moves on and if Nokia would stop developing new devices,
competitors would go ahead and get the advantage. If something does not
sell, you have to try something else.

What I've read, N900 is the official ARM platform for MeeGo and
certainly supported. You can install MeeGo platform on N900 already now.

Money comes from sales. How many people would be enthusiastic of buying
something like N810 nowadays? You cannot sell the same device for years
and years, it just gets old at some point.

wayfinder on n800 license expired

2010-06-08 Thread Paolo Casarini

Two years ago I bought the navigation kit for Nokia N800 and last week when I
started the application a popup dialog tells me that the license is expired.
Does anybody know how to solve the problem? I don't remember any limit declared
when I bought the product.

I wrote to the wayfinder support but nobody replies to me.

TIA,
  Paolo.

"top" being started and running in the terminal naturally consumes
some resources from the system, but you don't need to care about that.

Just wait 10 secs after starting "top" for things to stabilize a bit
and then paste the output from top here so that people can comment
on what looks to be wrong.

The main obstacle is that the N810 does not have powerful enough OpenGL
hardware for Maemo 5 user interface. So Maemo 5 would be really slow in
N810, making it worse than the original UI. Nokia is in device selling
business, so making devices worse is not in its interest.. :)
