Defective N900 for free

2017-05-05 Thread Rainer Dorsch
Hi,

my N900 does not boot anymore. Since I do not use it regularly anymore, I
would give it away for fee, I expect only compensation for the actual the
shipping cost.

I replaced the display some years back, so this might not be an OEM display
anymore.

If anybody is interested, please let me know.

Rainer

Location Service XEP-0080

2012-09-30 Thread Rainer Dorsch
Hello,

I am wondering if azimuth

  http://blog.desmottes.be/post/2010/04/25/Introducing-Azimuth-for-Maemo

is only for me not working anymore or if it is broken for some reason (maybe
the jabber.org server was upgraded, etc.) ?

Is anybody using another service instead for location publishing?

Thanks,
Rainer

Navit and Canola on n810

2010-09-11 Thread Rainer Dorsch
Hello,

I was running navit and canola on my N810 today. I was running canola for
music playback and navit for navigation. Unfortunately canola was stuttering,
when navit was updating its map (at least I had the impression that this
correlation exists).

Does anybody have an idea what I could do? Is there a buffer for audio data,
which I could increase?

Many thanks,

I found the problem: for some reason, mplayer pauses sometimes at the
beginning or shortly after the beginning. The space key continues mplayer and
it works flawless then

Thanks for the quick reply.

Are you refering to

?

If yes, I think that problem causes download problems. I can download without
any problem, but I cannot play the files reliably.

To be on the save side, I downloaded the two files (getpass.py and
youtube-dl), but I do not see any change...downloading works, playing not.

Is mytube working for anybody?

Mytube on N900

2010-04-17 Thread Rainer Dorsch
Mihai,

mytube does not play videos very well for me on the N900:

mplayer opens displays the first few frames and sound and then stops. When
mplayer stops. There is some variation:
- very few videos play well
- some videos play a short period of time (second(s))
- some videos sometimes play well
- some videos display only the first (few?) frames, no sound

An example is
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSUkCCTCqF8&feature=PlayList&p=95530EAC51D54487&playnext_from=PL&playnext=1&index=67

Do you have any idea what is going wrong?

Can I get somehow more debug information what is going wrong?

Thanks,
Rainer

GT says QLandkarteM: no device found. Is it connected to the network?

yes it is, in my wifi network.

I found these dirs, but empty.

HmmI have no garmin device. In GT I find the only reference to Export in

File -> Export Geodata

but that wants to create a gpx file (does not sound like geotiff).

I have no problem with that ;-)

I am aware of the page, but I did not find answers on my basic questions
(which are to a good extend GT / M interaction questions than M only
questions). If you think some of my questions are answered on qlandkarte.org,
just write back something like -> documented in qlandkarte.org <- and I
review the page for that question again.

Thanks for providing the nice tool :-)

I have not yet investigated this issue further. I copied in the meantime my
kdepim contacts from ~/.kde/share/apps/kabc/std.vcf and imported it into the
contacts application.

Not sure which distri you are running, but you might have a newer version of
libsyncml. Maybe it would be worth to try if you have more luck with the
basic reading of the addressbook

 syncml-obex-client -b  25 --slow-sync text/x-vcard

Correct.

It says "Booting from mmc (mmcblk0p2 ext2)"

At least this has an effect :-) Default is now external MMC card (instead of
internal one which I wanted to have :-(

I think I have to understand bootmenu.conf and bootmenu.sh better. I think
they are not consistent on my setup, which might cause the problems (?)

E.g. in bootmenu.sh it says

MENU_2_NAME="Internal MMC card, partition 2, ext2"
MENU_2_ID="immc2"
MENU_2_DEVICE="${INT_CARD}p2"
MENU_2_MODULES="mbcache ext2"
MENU_2_FSTYPE="ext2"
MENU_2_FSOPTIONS="noatime"
[ -d "/sys/block/${INT_CARD}/${MENU_2_DEVICE}" ] ||
MENU_2_NAME="(${MENU_2_NAME}

MENU_3_NAME="External MMC card, partition 2, ext2"
MENU_3_ID="mmc2"
MENU_3_DEVICE="${EXT_CARD}p2"
MENU_3_MODULES="mbcache ext2"
MENU_3_FSTYPE="ext2"
MENU_3_FSOPTIONS="noatime"
[ -d "/sys/block/${EXT_CARD}/${MENU_3_DEVICE}" ] ||
MENU_3_NAME="(${MENU_3_NAME}

while in bootmenu.conf I have

MENU_2_NAME="Internal MMC card, partition 2, ext2"
MENU_2_ID="mmc2"
MENU_2_DEVICE="${INT_CARD}p2"
MENU_2_MODULES="mbcache ext2"
MENU_2_FSTYPE="ext2"
MENU_2_FSOPTIONS="noatime"
[ -d "/sys/block/${INT_CARD}/${MENU_2_DEVICE}" ] ||
MENU_2_NAME="(${MENU_2_NAME}

#MENU_3_NAME="Internal MMC card, partition 3, ext2"
#MENU_3_ID="mmc3"
#MENU_3_DEVICE="${INT_CARD}p3"
#MENU_3_MODULES="mbcache ext2"
#MENU_3_FSTYPE="ext2"
#MENU_3_FSOPTIONS="noatime"

Booting from a flash card

2009-07-17 Thread Rainer Dorsch
Hello,

I used the nice wiki page http://wiki.maemo.org/Booting_from_a_flash_card to
make my N800 boot from my internal flash card (internal mmc).

Nokia-N800-23-14:~# df
Filesystem 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/mmcblk0p24096  2404  1692  59% /mnt/initfs
none   51288   424  17% /mnt/initfs/tmp
/dev/mmcblk0p212019360424824  10983976   4% /
none   51288   424  17% /tmp
none  102456   968   5% /dev
tmpfs 1024 0  1024   0% /dev/shm
/dev/mmcblk0p1 3902704   1203160   2699544  31% /media/mmc2
Nokia-N800-23-14:~#

What does not work though is to make the internal flash card (internal mmc)
the default boot device with

chroot /mnt/initfs cal-tool --set-root-device ask:immc2

The N800 always wants to boot from internal flash (flash) instead.

Any hint what I am doing wrong is welcome...

Thanks,
Rainer

Interesting. I had more trouble with the GTK interface and liked the internal
one.

I assume you mean a route?

You need to set a position and a destination. You can click the map and then
in the menu select actions and then you can use the world icon to use the
location you clicked at.

which guy are you using? internal or gtk? I did not get that working with
internal.

I would think that maintaining a custom xml file is worthwile. Could the
nightly build script pull one from a server (e.g. maemo wiki)?

Hi Qole,

thanks for your response and the links.

I will look into the easy-deb-chroot stuff (running Debian since 1996 on all
my systems:-). So far I thought chroot is only a toy and openoffice is far
too heavy for realworld usage.

How enduser friendly is such an installation. E.g. can it be configured that
clicking on a ppt document in the browser opens OpenOffice as viewer right
away? Do I have to start OO always from the cmd line or is there an easy way
to make it showing up in any kind of menue?

Many thanks,
Rainer

I have a localized N800 (German), so I tried to translate back

Let me try how I got there:

Menu -> Settings -> Control -> [section connection settings ] Phone (here
below the bluetooth entry)

In there I can add phone and edit phones, but I cannot delete phones.

When going through bluetooth it works well though.

modest does not update newmail in imap folder

2008-08-17 Thread Rainer Dorsch
Hello,

I run an IMAP server (courier-imap) and connect with modest to it. The server
filters incoming mails and files them in appropriate (hierarchical) folders.

I noticed that modest displays new mails only in the top-level hierarchy, e.g.
when I have

Inbox
Private
- Friends
- Projects
Business

Modest would display me new mail in the folders Inbox Private and Business,
but not in Private/Friends and Private/Projects. Other IMAP clients (e.g.
kmail) display new mail in all folders properly.

Did a miss a configuration option or is this a bug?

Thanks,
Rainer

4 GB MMC for the N770

2008-05-02 Thread Rainer Dorsch
Hello,

the N770 is still as a wonderful device for me when it comes to outdoor
navigation with maemo-mapper. The aluminium case is unmet by its successors

I major shortcoming for me is the 1 GB MMC card which I still have installed.
Can somebody tell if 4 GB cards work with the N770? If yes, is there any
difference when it comes to 4 GB support when I use OS2006 or OS2008HE?

I found on several locations that opensync can sync GPE and a linux desktop
apps like kaddressbook/evolution/ Since telepathy is using the the OS200x
built-in addressbook, I am wondering if somebody found a way (or at least a
plan) to sync the built-in address book with opensync

Many thanks,
Rainer

"Whiteboard" confcall

2007-12-21 Thread Rainer Dorsch
Hello,

I am wondering if there is a tool for Maemo which allows to share
a "whiteboard" on several internet tablets (i.e. do a confcall and at the
same time everybody can draw on and see the same whiteboard). I hope that
this is useful for distributed teams. Since the maemo development community
is also distributed others might have thought about this before

Thanks,
Rainer

Multi Profile Setup

2007-11-12 Thread Rainer Dorsch
Hello,

I am wondering if anybody has experimented with a setup for an N770/N800 which
allows several people to share such a device, i.e. using multiple accounts on
an N770/N800 and depending on who is using the device, login as the
appropriate user and everything is setup correctly (email accounts, rss
feeds, etc.).

Thanks,
Rainer

Re: Problem with maemo-mapper on N770

2007-11-01 Thread Rainer Dorsch
Hi,

yes, that is the procedure which worked for me with maemo-mapper on the
OS2007HE.

When I run the OS2007 one from the command line, I got an illegal instruction
error. That may be explained easily, because the N800 uses a different
instruction set architecture version from ARM than the N770. The N800
processor supports additional instructions. If the OS2007 packages make use
of the new instructions, they will not run on the N770. The best solution
would be (my view) to recompile them in an OS2007 scratchbox with support for
ARM9 (not ARM11). This is part of the ongoing repository mess discussion on
maemo-devel.

Gopinath,

I do not want to stop you, just make sure you know that there is a open source
SIP client for the N800 packaged already

http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/maemo/developers/24935?do=post_view_threaded

I would appreciate to see something (non-Gizmo) for the N770, though.

Re: Subscribe to maemo wiki

2007-10-23 Thread Rainer Dorsch
Thanks for pointing out that issue. I added a comment and two screenshots. It
is easy to reproduce the problem, so feel free to ask for more information.

A few more glitches which I noticed:

-> bugzilla does not work with my maemo.org ID. I had to create a separate
one :-(

-> the wiki page I created https://maemo.org/community/wiki/gtalkonlinux/ was
read protected by default for the public, I could not share the information
with upstream authors of the tools :-(

-> I tried to get the permissions changed. I saved my modifications and I got
a "Server Error" http://bokomoko.de/~rd/savepermissions.png and locked out
myself such that I cannot edit the page any more, even though I am logged
in :-(

I am a little reluctant of just opening bug reports, I think these are so
basic things that the chance is high, that they are working, but I did
something wrong. If you think they are really broken, let me know and I open
the bug reports.

Thanks,
Rainer

Hi Nick,

many thanks for your reply. I created a page for googletalk on a linux desktop
in the maemo wiki. In this page I summarize all the information I found so
far:

https://maemo.org/community/wiki/gtalkonlinux/

Since I have neither tried any of the approaches nor asked if that content is
appropriate for the maemo wiki, I did not yet link it.

Thanks,

STARTTLS not implemented (maemo port)

2007-10-16 Thread Rainer Dorsch
Hello,

I am quite happy with the claws-mail program on my Nokia N770 and I upgrade
regularly to new versions.

When I upgraded to the latest claws-mail version 3.0.2 on my Nokia N770, I
noticed that I could not send mail any more via my exim4 server (running on a
Debian etch machine).

I configured my exim4 mailserver to allow only TLS when plain or login
authentification is used. With the version 3.0.2 (maybe also very few before)
I cannot send mail any more. In the log (of the claws-mail client) I see:

ESMTP> STARTTLS
ESMTP< 502 Error: command not implemented

Does anybody know what is going wrong there?

Thanks,
Rainer

Re: N800 gpsbabel supporting the WBT-201

2007-10-14 Thread Rainer Dorsch
Hi Tilman,

thanks, that is very nice news. I describe what I did (hope the helps others):

First I noticed, that I did not find the package via apt-get. Is gpsbabel not
yet in a apt compatible respository?

I downloaded it manually.

I had to install libusb and libcairo2 manually to get gpsbabel and GTK GRays 2
installed.

After GTK GRays-2 started :-)

I tried to communicate with the wintec device, but got an "error opening
device /dev/rfcomm0".

Do you know if I have to do anything additionally to get bluetooth working?

Hmm...why not downloading them directly to Maemo Mapper itself? In the "Manage
Maps" dialog you can even specify to overwrite maps, which is probably more
useful for OSM than for other less fequently changing maps.

during the install of a package, I accidentially created a menu entry

->Extra-> Multimedia

The plan was to get a menu on the toplevel

->Multimedia

Does anybody know, where I can delete the Extras->Multimedia again?

Thanks,
Rainer

Does anybody know, if there is a SIP application except Gizmo? Gizmo has still
a few seconds break when the call starts, which is more than annoying...

Jonathan,

thanks for verifying that gpsbabel works with the maemo platform.

Do you have a scatchbox environment for the N770 arround? If yes, can you
compile the gpsbabel version for the N770 as well?

With non-Gizmo servers I saw frequently the first seconds missing in a call
(not sure if that is by accident). That rendered it unusable for me. I was
trying with sipgate.de, all desktop VOIP clients worked well with that SIP
server.

Great news, Jonathan.

Does the bluetooth connection work reliably? I have *sometimes* some issues

See the wintec-users mailing list

His patches are in CVS already and work for me on the desktop (and I paypaled
him today! :-). I supply the Debian etch binary linked through his wiki:

http://hexten.net/wiki/index.php/WBT201_Release_Notes

When we can get that working from the maemo platform and integrate it into
maemo mapper, it would be a very nice solution.

I understand now that the N800 supports *only* jingles, but this does not
answer my question.

Is there a known way to get the output of the video cam to a linux desktop
(given both IPs are known)?

E.g. by running the Nokia win app in wine or even streaming raw data to a
linux desktop should work in a 54 mbit/s WLAN...

Good point. Looks like the nokia software for the PC (Windows only)

video conferencing - ekiga

2007-04-05 Thread Rainer Dorsch
Hello,

I do not want to run ekiga on the N800 (although that would probably solve my

Ralph,

thanks for the instant response.

It took a little while until I found out that I have to try to connect to the
net and then try to edit the connection during that trial. Finally it work
and the 770 is connected.

Thanks again,
Rainer

[maemo-users] How to delete wrong preshared key in connection setup

2007-02-11 Thread Rainer Dorsch
Hello,

I entered a wrong preshared key in the connection setup of os2006.2 and the
770 stored the connection (hope that are matching English translations of the
German messages ;-). Now the 770 does not ask me any more if I want to enter
a correct preshared keyand fails with the wrong key.

Any hint how to delete the connection or edit the key (in a config file) are
welcome...

Thanks,
Rainer

Wow, that is good news, thanks for replying. Tried it with sipgate.de, the
first 2 or 3 seconds of the call have been muted, but after that it worked
well (still on the 770).

I have with ekiga on my Thinkpad trouble when using the build in mic and
loudspeakers with echos. Is that solved in the 770 and 800 in hardware or
would we see there the same issue and it would only work with headsets (n800)
or earphones (n770)?

Thanks,
Rainer

HmmI assume Gizmo still ties you to their own sip service and other
services are not possible. Is there any other SIP client for maemo which
allows me to use any sip server?

That is weired. I did that recently and it worked well...I just clicked on the
entry under Extras.

No good idea what to do next, having a terminal is somehow basic.

Anybody else?

I was able to get "Osso Xterm" from the repository listed there installed, I
had trouble with "Osso Xterm (advanced)" though I don't remember any more if
it was a dependency problem or the "Unable to install. Incompatible
package".

After I had Osso xterm installed and dropbear, I got my network working and
added the repositories to the sources.list. I used apt-get to install
packages from this time on and I did not get the incompatible packages any
more. But I remember there was a discussion recently on the maemo-devel list
about that topic...

There are two flavours of osso-term around. For one I also had trouble to
install that due to many dependencies (the more advanced one), the other

[maemo-users] Extending search applett on home view beyond google

2006-09-13 Thread Rainer Dorsch
Hello,

I am wondering, if there is a way to extend the search applett on the home
view beyond the ability to search at google. It almost looks like this, but I
did not yet find the key.

I found

2300_osso-global-search.desktop

but not sure, if this one is responsible for the search applet.

Any comment is welcome.

Many thanks,

proprietary and can only use the gizmo SIP.

I heard of a command line SIP application:

Maybe others know more ?

Thanks,

Re: [maemo-users] PIM suites

2006-09-13 Thread Rainer Dorsch
Hi.

Did you compile gpesyncd separately? It is not included in the package from
kernelconcepts, but required.

Not that I have it working, but I specifically looked for that and gave up the
to sync gpe with opensync.

Rainer

Re: [maemo-users] Underbar in handwriting recognition

2006-09-11 Thread Rainer Dorsch
Tomas,

many thanks for the detailed answer, that should help. Also I think after some
training of myself and changing a few characters, the hand writting
recognition is quite usable.

There might be issues with performance, but if these improve with a SW update,
I am quite happy with it.

Would performance improve, if I reduce the number of shapes per character?
I.e. doing a kind of very unique symbol per character, like (at least the
early) Palms did?

Many thanks,
Rainer

[maemo-users] Underbar in handwriting recognition

2006-09-09 Thread Rainer Dorsch
Good morning,

I am wondering, if anybody is using handwritting recognition.
I am still struggling of getting an underscore The training tool say I
have to enter something like

._

What does the dot in the character mean?

Or do I have to do something (e.g. pressing another button)before I can get an
underbar?

Many thanks,
Rainer

My charger was stolen with my suitcase, so I was hoping to save
battery :-( And I am new to the 770, so I have no experience at all.

That is bad news, because that would mean that flashing my 770 would not fix
the problem that it switches on in an uncontrolled manner when in a
pocket.... try to find out, how/when that happens then.

Frantisek,

Nokia770-26:/etc/apt# chroot /mnt/initfs cal-tool -d
cal_read_block(r&d_mode): size zero, block not found?
disabled
Nokia770-26:/etc/apt#

would you read that as rd-mode disabled?

That is probably correct.

I assume, I can't disable the rd mode without flashing because it is a kernel
feature (I don't have an USB cable right now, but I have terminal/root access
etc...).

You are right, I saw the nokia text maybe for two seconds then the screen

After switching on, it whitescreened and switched off again.

Recharging the device helped for me. Though not sure, if that is your problem
as well.

[maemo-users] calendar/PIM recommendation ?

2006-08-19 Thread Rainer Dorsch
Hello,

I am wondering, if anybody can recommend a calendar which runs on the Nokia
770 and several desktops/laptops. I have a server available on which I could
install (prefereable) debian packages.

Right now, I am running jpilot from my old Palm without a lot of
syncronisation for my calendar, I maintain contacts, notes,... in a plain
text files with cvs syncronisation.

Just curios, what I should start to look at when the new Nokia 770 arrives
hopefully next week.

Thanks,
Rainer

Hmm...how is the os2006 built-in VOIP supposed to be used? With the built-in
mic and speaker? Does this work reasonably (no echos, no broken voices
because the mic switches of frequently to avoid echos)?

[maemo-users] Upgrade to OS 2006 Edition with a Linux Host

2006-08-10 Thread Rainer Dorsch
Hello,

this is probably the wrong mailing list to ask, but it is the best one I know
about. If you know a better place, please let me know and I will ask there.

I am about the by a Nokia 770 (a Sharp Zaurus SL-C3200 is a close second
choice). When I want to upgrade the OS on the Nokia 770, it seems that I need
a MS Windows systems, at least the German Nokia website tells this.

Can the Nokia 770 boot (and maybe install) from an USB stick?

Thanks,
Rainer

PS: Does anybody know, if the Zaurus may be upgraded without a Windows
systemI have none.
