uShare (a UPnP Media Server) works for me, with kilikali on the default

Rhythmbox/Banshee/Muine/a DAAP server on the server machine, and Canola
as the N800 front-end should work, although I didn't have much luck
myself.

You can probably hack an SSH tunnel if you want to export your music

These [Rhythmbox/Banshee/Muine/] are all desktop apps for GNOME; this
isn't what i want. The Linux server is a headless machine. I don't

You still require a browser to control your playlist etc. So as a

I just started to use gnump3d and I have been happy with it so far.
Setup took 10 minutes and I was able to browse to my music and I was
able to play my music.  I have not tried it with video so I can not

seems to be not working. If you found something to stream videos,

mp3s just play from regular ol' http just fine in the media player.

There are a number of jukebox web apps. I am using netjuke, which is old. Of
course, the reliable fallback is directory indexes served up by a webserver.

Surely some jukebox web apps will play in the web page with Flash MP3
streaming. There are even online services trying to make a business out of it
with tools for syncing--say mp3tunes.com and oboe.

> Doesn't for videos though.

Ah, well, I have found that mp4 files muxed by gpac MP4Box (but not ffmpeg or
mp4creator) are playing progressive download via http! If totem browser
plugin were ported, we'd be stylin' and could embed it in a web app.

$ mp4info n800-2.mp4
mp4info version 1.2
n800-2.mp4:
Track TypeInfo
201 video MPEG-4 Simple @ L1, 54.589 secs, 503 kbps, 320x240 @ 29.97 fps
101 audio MPEG-4 AAC LC, 54.464 secs, 64 kbps, 32000 Hz

Not as good quality as mp4, but the browser plays .swf files in the browser
over http, and ffmpeg can transcode to swf or flv.

gallery2 support flash video:
http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery2:Modules:flashvideo

Here is an example:
http://www.4wiseguys.com/G2Bridge/index.php?&g2_itemId=483

You can make a script to transcode anything to your desired format. I can give
you an example.

Thanks Dan, however this all requires you control it using a web
browser; i already have that setup with SlimServer.

i don't want to have to juggle a media+player and the web+browser on my
N800 while listening to music. Its clunky and in today's modern age, we
should demand something sexier!! :)

I have been playing with USHARE and so far thats *not* too bad --
however it croaks on certain directories which i am not sure why. So i
will investigate that.

On the N800 front: Canola and MediaPlayer are both performing well; but
the MediaStreamer refuses to find the USHARE server.

On this journey, it has taught me one thing; this isn't for the faint
hearted; setting up this little device to do something as simple as
streaming from your music collection is not for the casual user. This
is yet another hole in the N800 armour in terms of mass adoption.

canola certainly fits that bill. I was trying to suggest a browser-based
experience--not requiring the media player--with a hint that there should be
a media player browser plugin.

I too will check it out. I am testing gmediaserver (audio only afaik); it was
easy to compile and run. However, I am not getting reliable results. mythtv
is a upnp server, but I only use it as a backend for recording, and its not
setup for sharing my other media. I will explore that one next.

well, don't forget that once canola and a server like ushare are working good,
except for mp3, you need to setup transcoding especially for Ogg Vorbis and
video. ushare calls a upnp server that does transcoding on-the-fly a "media
adapter."

I've started a little research project to figure out the best setup for
streaming media to N800. Check it out at:

http://nedim.cholich.com/2007/06/upnp-servers-and-n800.html

There is a lot more to cover. One thing I would say however so far is that
on Windows WMP works the best.

Also note about MythTV, although it has built in upnp server it does _not_
work with N800 nor many other software upnp renderers. It's real shame since
I have tone of content on MythTV including tv shows and movies etc.

If you all can help with comments on what works and what doesn't maybe we
can have definitive list of server/player combinations.

Another thing is I'm not sure if players share common upnp library or not
and how many players have it implemented separately of the os.

Is it a good idea to limit yourself to UPNP? I have been looking for a
solution to streaming my music across a routed network (and, eventually,
across my VPN). If anyone has a solution for that I am very interested.

At the moment it looks like DAAP may be more likely to provide the solution
than UPNP (although there is no good free daap client for Windows,
unfortunately). My understanding is that daap can do it if the client can be
told the server address -- unfortunately Canola doesn't seem to allow that.

I also found a solution to provide remote daap services over tunnels using SSH
or stunnel (see http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-187145.html)
which I think might work with Canola if only I could find avahi-utils for
Maemo.

So, it looks like daap might work one day. Which is more than I was able to
say when I tried using UPNP.

DAAP is the protocol used by iTunes. iTunes runs on Windows. So do
other DAAP clients that run on Windows, like jTunes, OurTunes, Get It
