sending patches upstream

The things that I've been working on are:

1) Cinnamon environment. I not only have a cinnamon environment
working on my local box, but I've also created a set of packages that
pull in all of the latest cinnamon themes, applets, and desklets.

2) Games: I'm tracking development for raceintospace, golly and
leocad. I've also got a local package of freeorion.

3) Astronomy/Visualization: I've created packages for the top
astronomy programs on sourceforge. These have either eye candy or are
professional tools or both. The things that I've packaged are
virtualmoonatlas, aladin, ds9 and a ton of astronomy related python
scripts. I've also worked on a drop in replacement for pgplot based
on plplot and a Pypi - rpm script. I also have a local package of
elmerfem working. I was going to work on paraview, and there are some
install issues, and I'd like to work on ds9 first.

I also have mesa working so if anyone wants to simulate a star, let me
know. The problem with mesa is that theorists work mainly with
source, so I've been trying to figure out the best way of packaging
mesa to allow for tweaking.

4) opengl for ATI: I was working a while ago trying to get the open
source GPU/glamor drivers working on the newest AMD card, but that
doesn't seem that useful since AMD doesn't seem interesting in this.
There are some bits and pieces in my dev box that might be useful if
someone else is working on this.

I'm also interested in taking requests. If there is some game or
astronomy related package that you'd like to get packaged let me know.

Hi Joseph,

Thanks for your work!
May I suggest you look at the new package requests on bugzilla?

There are almost 500 of them :-).

no, he said for Cauldron after Mageia 3 release. (unless backport, but
cinnamon is not a leaf package, so not there either). you'll have to wait for
at least Mageia 4 ( that is IF this package plays well with gnome and there's
maintenance and such)

The cinnamon conflict with gnome has been fixed in the packages I
have. There is a patch that fixes the problem that I've sent
upstream, and I can package it locally with the patch.

As far as the other packages

peazip - I'm looking at getting that packaged. It's pascal code, but
it open source pascal code that doesn't look too bad.

energytycoon - working on that

openra - the problem with openra is that it seems to require closed
source data files. That doesn't keep us from putting it into tainted,
but it does put it on much lower priority. lgeneral also has that
problem

I've looked over the package requests. I just submitted a few Chinese
fonts. Mplayer2 looks interesting.

iinm you're still a novice packager, so ideally this should be
doublechecked by others(mentor) and since you might have conflicts, there
should at least be approval by the gnome packager... but well, we have
some time for that anyway, since cauldron only reopens in april.

tainted is for patented packages.
nonfree is for nonfree packages, or if they require nonfree files.

in the mean time while cauldron is version frozen. perhaps you can also
help to fix some of the bugs (especially if they are release critical)

also, keep in mind that new packagers are great, but even those need to be
maintained (of course, this only is for full packagers, but you can ask
your mentor to maintain them in your place and when you become full
packager to shift them to you).

You can run urpmq only once with all the args but as the packages are
installed, I would just use rpmquery

urpmi $(rpmquery --qf %{SOURCERPM}\n $@ | sed 's/-[^-]*-[^-]*$/-debuginfo/')

That should make things faster :)

Just a one query:

To install GRUB 2 to the MBR and create a menu you can use:-
# grub2-install /dev/sdX

Does create a menu produce a boot menu (grub.cfg) containing
entries for all identified already-installed distros - just as is
done by the Mageia-3 distro installer?

Yes

And the decision to use it as the default bootloader for Mageia 3 was

Looks as though that decision has been reversed!

According to the posting on 2013/01/04 in Comment 27 in:

  https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8463

Grub2 is not the default bootloader - nor will it be, certainly
for the life of Mageai3 - it is a proposed *option*, under
 test.

Maybe I got it wrong, but I still think that's how it will turn out ;)
