[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 673319] Re: Saving view takes you to back to start page rather than the view itself

2011-11-22 Thread François Marier
On master, the main save button is now called done. Furthermore,
hitting save when editing the view properties takes you to the content
page for that view.

Saving view takes you to back to start page rather than the view
  itself

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
Mahara version 1.3.3, Ubuntu Server 64 Bit OS, Postgres, Firefox,
  Chrome

When finished editing a view it would be great if after you hit the
save button it would take you back to the view instead of back to the
main page. This gets quite annoying when you have several views and it
takes multiple clicks just to get back to where you were. Is there a
quick code tweak I could implement to make this happen?

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 661590] Re: Create blocktype Outcomes for Moodle 1.9 submitted work

I guess we don't really have to worry about Moodle 1.9 anymore, but it
would be nice to get this working with Moodle 2.

Bug description:
Mark Drechsler demonstrates the Moodle plugin for submitted Mahara
views into Moodle 1.9 at http://www.markdrechsler.com/?p=144

As he says, it would be good to have a blocktype to pull the outcomes
  information into a Mahara view.

I believe, even with Moodle 2.0 coming, not everybody will move to it
immediately and thus, this plugin, especially as it submits views for
grading in Moodle, is a great addition for those who are looking into
using Mahara for assessment purposes. Furthermore, please correct me
if I am wrong, but even with the Portfolio API and the Repository API,
I cannot submit views from Mahara into Moodle 2.

Allow views to exist in multiple collections

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
The new collection feature is a great one. However, when a view is
added to a collection it can't be reused; either in a collection or on
its own. As an example, I may have created a CV view which I plan to
use for all my job applications. I plan to create a new collection for
each application as the jobs I'm applying for are in different areas.
I therefore need to have a CV in each collection, and having to create
a new CV view for each collection doesn't fit with Mahara's concept of
reuse of content. In addition, I may wish to share just my CV with
someone, and presently when they visit it they will see the navigation
bar for the collection. It makes sense for views to exist separately
to collections, rather than as part of them.

Bug description:
I'm aware that the roadmap for 1.4 mentions resizing images on the fly
for use in Views, however, I feel that it would be more appropriate to
resize images when they are uploaded as this would avoid using too
much of a user's quota. The way I envisage this is that the site
administrator sets a maximum size and any image larger than this is
automatically resized. Perhaps also there could be a checkbox when
uploading to override this, in the rare case that an image needs to be
  full-resolution.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 688416] Re: Watermarks over images

2011-11-22 Thread François Marier
Watermarks, like DRM, are all about restricting sharing of content.

Users are already able to prevent their views from being copied, specify
(or not) any of the CC licenses, and prevent their views from being
accessible to others. I don't think we need to add watermarks into the
mix.

I think there should be an option to add a watermark to an image before it is
displayed to someone.
Creative commons is all good, but the image can still be copied.
Maybe also have a link to request the owner to release the full
un-watermarked image to a specific person.

not in their insitution. This feature would be useful for safeguarding, for
example a college may not want adult college members to be able to communicate

Upgraded to Mahara 1.40 this summer. Users are taken to a default my
name's blog when clicking on the journal link under the content tab -
with no option to add a new journal or to display any others that they
might have created. If the same users click on the Publish a Journal'
link on the dashboard the button to create a new journal, and any
other journals are also visible. The hyperlink from each of these two
links appears to be the same.

I've encountered the issue when working with staff who had Mahara
accounts before the upgrade, as well as new students - when clicking
on either link, I (the administrator) see the option to create a new
journal and all my existing journals, but others who have a second
journal don't see it when clicking on the journal link under the tabs.

I've found the reference to opting to have multiple journals from the
individual's acount settings but this issue is really confusing our
users who are encouraged to keep separate journals for different
purposes. If I had option to enable multiple journals globally by
default that would help - but users should see the all of their
journals and ideally the same 'create' option from the tab link that
  they see from the dashboard.

Bug #707860 deals with listing of group members. A suggestion was
made: a simplified list like there is in Online users would be useful
  too

The simplified list could be a block that the group admin could put on
the group dashboard instead of the current block that has the large
  icons.

This pertains to the improvement to the online user sideblock where

listed according to friends, groups etc.

Groups may be a bit tricky because users can be in multiple groups.

Bug description:
On bug #707860 the suggestion was made to show all members of a group
at once. In groups that are very large this may not be useful.
Instead, we propose to allow a user to choose how many results he
  would like to see, e.g. 10, 25, 50, 100, 500 per page.

This is not only useful for displaying the number of members in a
group but for any overview page where basically search results are
displayed: pages, collections, group. Thus, this feature would be good
to have available in all these places.

Bug description:
Currently, as Richard told me, group members are listed according to
their group joining date on the membership page of a group with the
admin leading, of course, as she was the first to create the group.

I think it would be good to have an alphabetical listing of group
members (admin can stay as the first if that is important) to make it
easier to find group members esp. in larger groups. The listing should
be according to their last name and then their first name.

If it is important to know the order that members joined a group, we
could have a setting above that allows for alphabetical and
  chronological listing.

Currently there is a block on the home page showing the users that
have come online in the last 10 minutes.

  The problems with this.
The list can be quite large and if your mahara site is running several
institutions then users from other instituions will show as well.
Someone could be logged in for more than 10 minutes and they won't show.

It would be better to only show online users who are connected in some
way to the user - eg friends or in a group they are a member of.

This is similar in concept to the groups block that shows on the home
page where only groups that the logged in user is part of are shown.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 717184] Re: Resize images at upload time

2011-11-22 Thread Steve Bailey
I've managed to get this developed by our local team. There is now a
preselected option to resize any image to defaults set in the
administration pages (we've gone for 1024 x 768), maintaining aspect
ratio, which appears anywhere a file can be uploaded. The upload takes a
little longer but it makes massive savings on space. I've attached a
screen shot for information. Is there an easy way to contribute this
back? I'm not an expert in this stuff but I can ask our developers to
help out where necessary.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 893615] [NEW] Allow teachers to export submitted Pages

2011-11-22 Thread Steve Bailey
Public bug reported:

For quality assurance purposes, assessed work (in the UK HE context) has
to be moderated by an external verifier, who will require access to the
original work. As assessed work is unlocked from editing when released
back to the student (and I agree that this should be the case) it would
be useful for a teacher to be able to export a submitted Page as
standalone HTML. It would make sense for this to appear as a link at the
bottom of the Page being assessed, e.g. next to the add to watchlist
link. The html snapshots can then be archived and/or sent to the
external verifier for moderation at a later date. This would also
preserve the multimedia richness of the Page format, in a way that
screen shots and PDF printouts cannot.

If an individual uses the Share Page to set the access levels for a
Page or Collection, and wishes to only allow for a Secret URL there

An external RSS feed made available via the feed blocktype should open
  in a new window.

I would amend this by saying: The user may want to choose as some
people see it as bad usability (cf.
http://www.useit.com/alertbox/990530.html ) to open new links in a
different browser window / tab. Thus, if possible the regular function
of target= when including a hyperlink could be included and goes
for all links that are associated with this RSS feed, i.e. the feed
address itself and the links to the individual feed items if the
  condensed version is chosen.

Bug description:
Following François' request, I ask my question and give a proposal
  about quota here.

In the master branch you add new quota policy for groups and
institutions. The help text says that the new quota enter here will
affect only new group's member or new institution's member; previous
group/institution's member will see their quota remained the same as
  before.

This is pretty good if the previous quota is higher than the new
policy but what happens if the quota decided by the group ou
  institution admin is higher ?

Normaly Mahara should then update the quota to the higher number.

If it is not the way Mahara behaves it should. If it is already the
case, the help section has to be updated to explain that if previous
quota for already enrolled users will remain the same or upgraded if
the new setting is higher than before.

  Regards,
  -dajan

It would be good for a user to be able to choose her default theme and
not let Lady Fortuna ;-) decide that for her. E.g. if a teacher is a
member of her school institution but at the same time also of an
organizational community that both have custom themes, she may only
want to see her school theme except when she is in a training session
and during a presentation of her work in the community. At the moment,
the organizational community's theme may always be the one that is
visible which can be disadvantageous when she wants to demo her

Bug description:

Is it possible to have all descriptions hidden so that the

would allow the value as and when required.

A couple of scenarios to ponder:

  1. Add a hide / show description switcher that toggles between no
description or the description for each group and page.

  2. Implement the functionality from the other dashboard items where a
click on the group / page title shows the description and a link takes
you to the actual page. - However, that would mean that the group
title is not clickable immediately and it takes one click longer to
get to the group which would be annoying for the groups and pages that
  do not have a description.

  3. Display only XX characters of the description and have a more
button which also takes you to the group / page.

  A seemingly minor point but...

My understanding is that in a computer form correct practice is to
enable users to tab from one entry field to the next ( although a lot
of people don't know this and use the mouse instead).

Try doing this in a Mahara New Journal Entry. Enter a title. Now,
  tab.

Instead of going to the Body field, which is almost certainly where
you want to be now so that you can make your entry, you're at the
Draft Checkbox. To get to the Body field you've got to pick up your
mouse and place the cursor there.

Tab again and you're at the Allow Comments checkbox. Tab again and
you're at the Save Entry button...

It would be quite nice if this could be fixed...

I checked this on master and it is also the case there.

Contact Us emails should only go to institution admins when sent by
  an institution member

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:

Bug description:
Any admin on a site receives Contact Us emails. However, in order to
have a better workflow and to know who is doing what, it would be
better if institution admins received only Contact Us messages that
were sent by members of their institution instead of any message. Many
messages may pertain to things that they don't know about and thus
should not receive messages as then nobody feels responsible for them.

  Thus:
Contact Us message from logged out user - Site Admin
Contact Us message from logged in user No institution - Site Admin
Contact Us message from logged in user with institution - Institution admin
/ admins if in multiple institutions

I would propose not to send the latter message to the site admin to
avoid that admins don't know who also got this email / if somebody
  else already dealt with this.

I would also update the sentence at the bottom to if possible to make
it clear why they get an email:

You receive this message because you are the [site admin / institution
admin for [name of the institution]]. This is an auto generated
notification from [site name]. To update your notification
  preferences, visit URL.

The same should go for Objectionable Content, and the virus messages.
Though for the latter, the site admin should probably receive all
  emails.

Title:
faulty contact us form with noreplyaddress configdirective

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Triaged

Bug description:
I am using Mahara 1.3.3 clean install on shared hosting with
inmotionhosting, linux php 5.3, mysql. Everything works, but my
emails sent by mahara are getting blocked. I had the same problem
with my moodle installation, but was able to configure it with SMTP
email and a defined, working noreply address. However, this is not
  working with mahara.

The mail is actually sent, but is blocked at the destination because
the user's profile email address is being used as the from field,
instead of the noreplyaddress as defined. Since the email is coming
from another domain, but claiming to be from the same domain as the
recipient, it's blocked by the receiving mailserver (rightfully so).

In doing the testing, I was following the troubleshooting info on the
wiki and using the contact us form to send the test emails. Peeking
around the code I see that that is a rather crude form that takes
the email given and passes it on to phpmailer as the from address.
The from email field is autopopulated since I am logged in, so the
noreplyaddress is never used in this case.

After fixing other problems, the contact form submissions still get
blocked (obviously). In a case where the noreplyaddress config
directive is set, the form should be smart enough to substitute that
address for the entered address (or better yet-- apply that address to
the reply-to address, and use the noreply address as the from or
sender fields to comply with proper envelope format and accepted
relay rules) since in effect mahara is using the mailserver as a
  relay.

If that can't be done, perhaps you could include a switch to turn off
the contact form and replace it with a email address url for contact
(mailto) so the person trying to contact the admin can use their own
mail system (less ideal I guess).

Lastly, until this is fixed, and possibly after, the troubleshooting
docs shouldn't suggest using this form to troubleshoot email since the
  form itself is the problem!

Currently, when you export a few pages as HTML you get collection

  collection information as well.

I noticed this issue while trying to implement a PDF export a little

Bug description:
To deter brute-forcing of passwords (and prevent ensuing DoS attacks),
we should temporarily lock accounts once they've had too many (4? 5?)

  Considerations:

  - This should be as fast as possible and ideally not use extra
queries. In a DoS setting, we want brute-forcers to add as little load
  as possible on the server.

  - To avoid adding a locked until field to the user table which needs
to be updated constantly, maybe we should just unlock all users every
time cron runs (every 5 min?) and tell users they've been locked out
  for up to 5 min.

part is tricky because Mahara / MyPortfolio puts the student in the
centre and s/he is the author of all her / his pages. A teacher or
administration cannot put anything on a page that a student can't
remove as he doesn't have the authority on the student's pages.

Thus, introducing such badges for profile pages is not a simple thing
to do. At the moment, the only way I can see this work, besides
Craig's suggestion with the electronic verification [of a PDF file à
la Moodle], would be to develop a database in which each institution
admin can store merit, sports etc. badges (would it be important to
categorise them?). He would then have an area on the student account
page where he can add the badges the student has earned over time. On
the edit page screen, the student would have a new blocktype, e.g.
under General, Badges, which s/he can pull into the content area.
That would work not just for the profile page but for any personal
page on MyPortfolio so that he could also include the badges on a CV
page. If the bages are categorised, s/he can choose which badge
categories to display (if that is necessary). The badges are all
displayed as thumbnails or in a series to scroll through like in the
  image gallery.

As the student cannot choose the badges individually, but displays
them from the central institution database, they are as tamper-safe as
can be because even when the student allows the copying of that page,
the badge block would display the badges of the student who copies the
page into her / his portfolio as the block would always display the
  current student's badges.
