Title:
Command-line script to convert 1.9 text box artefacts to 1.10 text
  blocks

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
In Mahara 1.10 we split the old text box artefact block into two
blocks: note, which is backed by a note artefact type that retains
the full Text box functionality, and text, which is meant to be a
  dead-simple easy-to-use text displayer.

We also added an admin screen to allow admins to optionally go through
and convert all the text boxes that weren't using advanced
functionality (attachments, placement in multiple pages) and turn them
  into text blocks.

On a large client site, this was taking so long, that I decided it
would be better to turn it into a command-line script. I've open this
bug, to upstream that command-line script.

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
Every block currently has a pair of settings on the block config page
to control whether the block is retractable, and if so, whether it
should start out retracted. Because both of these settings have
descriptions below them as well, they take up a fair bit of vertical
space, even though they are seldom-used settings.

I'd like to explore some ways to make these settings more compact so
that they don't expand the config screen so much.

Bug description:
  as per http://mahara.org/interaction/forum/topic.php?id=3705

An external RSS feed made available via the feed blocktype should open
  in a new window.

I would amend this by saying: The user may want to choose as some
people see it as bad usability (cf.
http://www.useit.com/alertbox/990530.html ) to open new links in a
different browser window / tab. Thus, if possible the regular function
of target= when including a hyperlink could be included and goes
for all links that are associated with this RSS feed, i.e. the feed
address itself and the links to the individual feed items if the
  condensed version is chosen.

I would go for #1 only. Also, if at some point we decide to add some
more options (if needed), we wouldn't overload the file upload. Also,
since you can upload files in bulk, it might not be convenient to do the
rotating during the upload.

Title:
Profile pages not shared by default

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Hi everyone,
I raised this with Kristina recently and also added a forum entry, but will
post a wishlist too.

Basically we are finding students who are new to Mahara adding
assignments and resume details to profile pages.

This presents an obvious problem in that many details are
confidential. Students would not share them with all logged in users
knowingly. This practice exists because the page already exists, users
don't need to learn how to create a page - and - it's already shared
so the teacher can see it.

In this way, some students can get away with not learning how to
create a page or share it in order to submit their first Mahara
assignment. Inadvertently they share everything with everyone.

This isn't a fault with Mahara, however from our point of view we need
to do something to prevent students from making this error.

Therefore our conclusion is that sharing profile pages should be opt-
in - not opt out. Or in the current case they cant even opt out.

The wish would be that Mahara had an option for the administrator to
control whether or not profile pages are opt-in or opt-out - and not
mandate that students share their profile pages. They are still
discoverable in find friends, and if they like they can allow fiends
  to see their profile page.

IF helping users understand this ability to share with friends is
important, then Maybe Mahara could have a series of first use pop up
dialogues to help users know what is possible, starting from a privacy
first stance as with other Mahara features.

  Cheers,
  Shane.

  Improvements to notification system

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Fix Released
Status in Mahara 1.10 series:

Status in Mahara 15.04 series:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
This patch implements some improvements to notification settings which
will also allow us to more easily implement further features. Included
  in this patch:

  - Each activity type can specify a default notification method. They default
to 'email' to remain backwards compatible.
  - Each activity type can specify if it is allowed to be set to 'none'.
Defaults to 'allowed' for backwards compatibility.
  - Removed 'required' from notification settings - it didn't make sense, and
the change above deals with this in a better way.
  - The site wide defaults for each activity type can be edited in Site options
- Notification settings. These are applied to new users or whenever a user
does not have the appropriate usr_activity_preference records.
  - There is a separate help next to each activity type to explain what
messages will be affected by the setting.

The following additional changes were made internally to allow the
  above:

  - Most activity types can now be set to 'none'. We feel that only user to
user and system messages should be enforeced and everything else should be
optional.
  - The way 'none' is handled was changed. A missing usr_activity_preference
record indicates that the settings has not yet been set, so the default should
be user. Null method indicates 'none' was selected.
  - The function pieform_get_help was modified to check for element fields
'helpplugintype', 'helppluginname' and 'helpformname' so that the notification
settings form elements could be reused in the site options. (We want to use the
same help files on more than one form, but the help files are saved with the
form name, so we had to allow the form name to be specified for the help).

Activity type plugin authors should be aware of the following changes:

  - 'enablenonemethod' and 'defaultmethod' are values that can be specified
when specifying an activity type. Both are optional.
  - Help files can be specified for each activity type. The help files can be
placed in the plugin's subfolder (e.g. artefact/myplugin/lang/...). Help files
are optional, but should be provided, otherwise There was no help found for
this item. will be displayed.

2015-03-06 Thread Kristina Hoeppner
Currently, when you click the Done button, you are taken back to your
pages overview. If that is not an action that users want to take but
rather want to display their page, we could change the Done button
into Display page. That would be useful for long pages when you don't
want to scroll all the way up again in order to click the Display page
tab. I would be hesitant though to replicate all tabs from the top at
the bottom. If all those links should be present at all times, I think a
different solution should be thought that keeps them available no matter
where you are on the screen like the content chooser panel.

Title:
Where to direct users when they are done editing a pag?

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Triaged

Bug description:
Normally, when I am in the process of editing or when I am finished
editing a page, I wand to see what it looks like without the editing
tools being in the way. I seem to have two choices: Clicking 'Display
page' in the in-page-tab will do what I want. Clicking 'Done' at
bottom of page brings me back to list of pages and I have to find the
page again and click it. This is why I tend to ignore this button
completely. I noticed that new users have trouble remembering the
location of the 'Display page' button.

Idea: Duplicate 'Display page' and place at bottom of page next to
'Done'. Rename 'Done' button to 'Other pages' or something similar. I
could then choose if I wanted to see the page or go and edit other
  pages.

  Available at http://www.pchart.net/
  Documentation (with examples) at http://wiki.pchart.net/

pChart is a PHP framework that will help you to create anti-aliased

  PDFs.

pChart is released under two licensing models. If your application is

Bug description:
I suggest to separate the allowing of public pages from the use of
secret URLs. In an organization that uses Mahara for assessment, you
may wish to prevent users from sharing their portfolios with the
public to avoid letting sensitive information be searchable in Google,
but you may still want to allow them to share their portfolio with an
assessor / expert who doesn't have an account on the site or use it to
create an employment portfolio to share with a prospective employer
who doesn't have access to the system.

Therefore, it would be good if secret URLs still worked even if the

If we should keep the option that a site needs to be locked down for

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1394830] Re: Allow secret URL even when public pages are not allowed

2015-03-06 Thread Kristina Hoeppner
The user option for noindex sounds the best as the site admin or
institution admin can't foresee what a user wants. Though thinking of
smaller children, they may not completely understand what the option is
for and thus, a noindex option could be forced.

This brings up the question also that we should consider public pages
for certain roles, e.g. don't allow public pages for regular users, but
for staff and admin. I filed wishlist item bug#1429325 for that.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1429325] [NEW] Allow public pages for staff and admins only

2015-03-06 Thread Kristina Hoeppner
Public bug reported:

When you use Mahara with a range of different age groups, you may
prevent certain ages from creating public pages so that they don't share
their pages accidentally with the public, e.g. young children who don't
look at the sharing options carefully.

I propose we be more granular in who can create public pages and public
profiles on the institution level:
- everyone
- staff and admins only

Ideally, an admin could overwrite the setting for individual trusted
regular users as well so that they don't need to be given the staff role
as that comes with more privileges.

And now it's looking more and more like being able to create other roles
and be able to manage permissions more like Moodle manages
capabilities...

Curently, roles are hard-coded in Mahara and thus that would need to
change first.

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:

Bug description:
Tested with MNet on Mahara 1.10:

A user cannot choose their primary email address when the account is
  managed by MNet.

  Use case:

  1. User logged in to the system with paula.wal...@nuts.nz as a manual account.
  2. The account was moved to MNet authentication.
  3. User changed their email to paula.ap...@fruits.nz in Moodle. This email
address was added to Mahara.
  4. User changed email domains to paula.ap...@flora.nz in Moodle. This email
address was added to Mahara.

User's primary email address is still paula.wal...@nuts.nz although
the only one in use is paula.ap...@flora.nz. User cannot change the
primary email address or delete obsolete ones because the account is
managed by MNet. MNet is set up to update user information upon login,
but that doesn't seem to delete email addresses that are not in use
  anymore.

The curious thing: In the administration under User search, I do see
paula.ap...@flora.nz as the active email address for the user.

If managed email addresses cannot / should not be deleted, the user
should still be able to decide which one the primary one should be.

We should only export big archiving when server is not busy but we

So we need to work out before an export begins approximately how big

Currently in htdocs/export/lib.php (line 625) there is the following:

// Get an estimate of how big the unzipped export file would be
// so we can check that we have enough disk space for it
  $space = $exporter-is_diskspace_available();

So we can take the value of $space and make a decision on it and bail
out if $space is big and server is busy. Something like:

  if ($space  TOO_BIG  server_busy()) {
  log_info('too busy');
  return true;
  }

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1363742] Re: Submit a group page to a group

2015-03-06 Thread Kristina Hoeppner
If there are several study groups, I would keep those separate and not
have all students in one group.

Deciding who can submit: I would not worry too much about that at the
moment and see if it caused a problem that a student would submit a
piece of work and another student in the same group wouldn't have just
yet. Students could communicate about that. In Moodle, I'm not aware of
a setting that would require all group members to give their OK for
submitting an assignment for example. Anything more complicated could be
added if needed at a later stage.

I would give a different info text though right before the submission so
that it says specifically that it's a group page / collection that is
being submitted and that the other group members won't be able to edit
it either.

Title:
Submit a group page to a group

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Wishlist item reported by Stephen Bright from the University of
  Waikato:

Students work in groups of 3 and want to be able to submit pages /
collections to a group for assessment without having to copy the page
into one of the users' accounts and then submitting that.

I think there are two things to consider:

  1. Submit a group page / collection to the group in which it was created,
e.g. when the instructor is tutor / admin in each student group.
  2. Submit a group page / collection to a different group. That way, student
groups would have their own space and their work could not be changed by other
students who are in the same group.

  Any other things to consider?

there is no notification to user B that user A has updated is journal.

This situation is the same with a journal block, a recent journal

It would be nice either to have the option to add the block to the

watchlist all modifications including a new journal entry in a block
  trigger a notification.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1420593] Re: user leaving group and embedded images

2015-03-06 Thread Kristina Hoeppner
Wouldn't the same be true for any files that you include in a portfolio
that are not in the area where you work, e.g. personal portfolio or
group?

What about taking the approach that the image continues to be tied to
the user, but when he deletes it, it's still available? I think Moodle
does some fancy file saving that allows you to do that. In addition,
there you can say whether you want to link a file from the original
location or rather copy it in the new location.

So would be a matter of checking when removing a user if they have any

In the Moodle software, the images are all managed by a cascade system.

This lets you use a svg file and maintain backward compatibility.

The system also detects if the browser supports SVG. Generally, all

Everything is cached to avoid unnecessary calculation.

So I was wondering if it was planned to add the following components to do
this:
  * A library for browser detection on the server side
  * A function to find the right file extension
  * A library for caching php

Title:
  Improving ADODB speed

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
To make ADODB function faster I found the following information:

--

  High Speed ADOdb

ADOdb is a big class library, yet it consistently beats all other PHP class
libraries in performance. This is because it is designed in a layered fashion,
like an onion, with the fastest functions in the innermost layer. Stick to the
following functions for best performance:
  Innermost Layer

  Connect, PConnect, NConnect
  Execute, CacheExecute
  SelectLimit, CacheSelectLimit
  MoveNext, Close
  qstr, Affected_Rows, Insert_ID

The fastest way to access the fields is by accessing the array
$recordset-fields directly. Also set the global variables
  $ADODB_FETCH_MODE = ADODB_FETCH_NUM, and $ADODB_COUNTRECS = false
before you connect to your database.

Consider using bind parameters if your database supports it, as it
improves query plan reuse. Use ADOdb's performance tuning system to
  identify bottlenecks quickly.

Installing the ADOdb C extension will speed up GetAll() and GetArray()
by 100%, and GetAssoc() by 30%. It will also speed up oci8 select
  statements by 30%.

Lastly make sure you have a PHP accelerator cache installed such as
APC, Turck MMCache, Zend Accelerator or ionCube.

  Advanced Tips

If you have the ADOdb C extension installed, you can replace your
calls to $rs-MoveNext() with adodb_movenext($rs). This doubles the
speed of this operation. For retrieving entire recordsets at once, use
GetArray(), which uses the high speed extension function
  adodb_getall() internally.

Execute() is the default way to run queries. You can use the low-level
functions _Execute() and _query() to reduce query overhead. Both these
functions share the same parameters as Execute().

If you do not have any bind parameters or your database supports
binding (without emulation), then you can call _Execute() directly.
Calling this function bypasses bind emulation. Debugging is still
  supported in _Execute().

If you do not require debugging facilities nor emulated binding, and
do not require a recordset to be returned, then you can call _query.
This is great for inserts, updates and deletes. Calling this function
bypasses emulated binding, debugging, and recordset handling. Either
the resultid, true or false are returned by _query().

It lists those who have requested friendship - but doesn't show how
long ago the request was made.

It would be nice if the info showed [Name], [Reason], [Date]
(currently only shows [Name] and [Reason])

It should be easy enough to do as the usr_friend_request table has a
ctime column (ctime = created time) so we would need to take that date
a format it into a user friendly readable way, format_date() function
  I think

Bug description:
  Usability Enhancement
  Hello,
I've thought this could be better worded for years but I'm only now getting
around to submiting a request. When signing into Mahara via a linked Moodle a
line of text is displayed beside the user profile picture that says You are
logged in from Moodle. This would be much more user friendly - and give people
an indication of what the link actually does - if instead it said Return to
Moodle, making it contextual.

I know that it's possible to edit the code to make this change - but
not every site admin is willing to alter core code (I'm not permitted
to at my current institution), so I'm suggesting that this would be a
useful change to make to core.

  Thanks, Gordon.

Allow a theme to specify that it has *no* parent

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:

Bug description:
Currently *all* themes (except the raw theme) either have another
theme as their parent, or they default to having the raw theme as
their parent. If a theme has no $theme-parent in its themeconfig.php
file, then it gets assigned the raw theme as its parent.

The team that's working on switching our themes to the Bootstrap
framework, say that it would be useful for their development work if
they could make an alternate raw theme that does *not* inherit from
  the raw theme.

So I've implemented a patch that allows a theme to specify
$theme-parent = FALSE in its themeconfig.php, to indicate that it has
  no parent theme.

Actual result: You'll see two newlines in the message for each one in the

This does not seem to happen when the HTML editor (TinyMCE) is active.

Title:
Smart Evidence - Phase 1 - SmartEvidence Module

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  In Progress

Bug description:
This bug is for implementation of the following aspects of bug
  1397759:

2 - Smartevidence artefact/plugin OR Site admin flag to enable
  SmartEvidence.:

  * For this phase, perhaps just dummy stubs to enable smartevidence(?).
If not enough time, for now, a flag in site options page that can be
pulled out later into its own smartevidence plugin.

  * A site administrator can turn on the “SmartEvidence” functionality
for the entire site, e.g. enabling a plugin. Once allowed in general,
institution administrators can decide whether to allow “SmartEvidence”
in their institutions or not. The functionality needs to be turned on
specifically, as it will add a lot of functionality, at least one menu
item etc. to the Mahara instance. Once the functionality has been
turned on and changes have been made either on the site or institution
level, it cannot be turned off anymore.

3 - Institution configuration to enable SmartEvidence for an
  institution.

  * Still need to work out affect on users with multiple institutions
(who are admins in one but not the others).

4 - New Admin menu for 'Smart Evidence':

  * New menu item in Administration – 'Smart Evidence'. With sub-menu
'Page Categories' – like group categories page.

  * Menu will appear only if Smartevidence plugin is installed.

  * For institutions, will appear if institution has switched on the
  flag.

  5 - Page/Collection Category :
  * New fixed system category 'SmartEvidence'.

  * Site administrators can set up categories for pages and collections
similarly to the concept of group categories.

  * The category “SmartEvidence” is provided by default when the site
administrator allowed the functionality in general and can only be
selected and seen by site and institution administrators when they
create institution or site pages / collections as these pages and
collections will need to be set up on the institution or site level.
Institution administrators only see the category when their
  institution allows “SmartEvidence”.

  * Only institution and site administrators will be able to see the
category chooser when creating pages and collections.

  * Pages and collections get categories added so that it will be easier
in the future to categorize pages and collections

display of views by the view's last update date. But the utility of
this is limited because the view.mtime column is only updated when the
view's description or tags are updated.

What we should do is update view.mtime whenever the view's contents
(i.e. its blocks, or its block contents) are updated. Essentially,
whenever a change to view would trigger a watchlist notification, it
should also update the view's mtime.

Title:
Pages that are shared with a group are still visible after the user
has been removed from the group

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
The scenario, as reported by SWITCH, is that there is a group for a
course, which is re-used from one year to the next. Each semester,
students share pages with the group while they are in the course.
However, when they leave the course (and the group) they do not un-
share the pages, and consequently the Pages shared with this group
list gets longer and longer, and it's hard to see the pages
specifically shared by students this term.

The solution we've decided on for this problem, is to add an option to
the Group pages block, to allow it to only show pages shared by
  members of the group.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1419532] Re: Add width and Height attributes to img tag in image blocks so they'll flow to the right size immediately

2015-03-06 Thread Kristina Hoeppner
The problem though I think is that users will not know what the correct
dimensions should be. You would also have the re-adjust them when the
block size changes. Currently, you don't have to provide a width in the
image block and the size is adjusted to fit the block size.

  Hi Sonn,

Behat is having some issues decompressing a file. It relates to this
  bug #1386970.

The tags were added and it was merged, maybe the wrong step definition

possibility the wording has changed since then also.

This is also dependent on the file attachment step.

I have attached a test below to test with.

Ability to display journal entries using mulitple tags

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  Mahara 1.8

  Hi Everyone,
At the moment displaying journals by tag allows a user to choose only one tag.

In a scenario where a student writes lots of journal entries for a
course say Underwater basket weaving, but wants some to be public
too, they would create two pages: one for the unit and one for the
  public.

Lets say they assigned the tags to every post UBW and to a few of
  them they add public.

They create their course page and add journal entries with UBW. No
  worries!

They create their public page for UBW stuff and add the tag which
one? They can't add public because that would pickup any other post
from oter journals tagges public, they can't add journals tagged
UBW because that would add non public posts.

Wishlist item is that: user can display posts with UBW AND Public

  Cheers,
  Shane.
