We also added an admin screen to allow admins to optionally go through and convert all the text boxes that weren't using advanced functionality (attachments, placement in multiple pages) and turn them into text blocks. On a large client site, this was taking so long, that I decided it would be better to turn it into a command-line script. I've open this bug, to upstream that command-line script. Basically we are finding students who are new to Mahara adding assignments and resume details to profile pages. This presents an obvious problem in that many details are confidential. Students would not share them with all logged in users knowingly. This practice exists because the page already exists, users don't need to learn how to create a page - and - it's already shared so the teacher can see it. In this way, some students can get away with not learning how to create a page or share it in order to submit their first Mahara assignment. Inadvertently they share everything with everyone. This isn't a fault with Mahara, however from our point of view we need to do something to prevent students from making this error. Therefore our conclusion is that sharing profile pages should be opt- in - not opt out. Or in the current case they cant even opt out. The wish would be that Mahara had an option for the administrator to control whether or not profile pages are opt-in or opt-out - and not mandate that students share their profile pages. They are still discoverable in find friends, and if they like they can allow fiends to see their profile page. IF helping users understand this ability to share with friends is important, then Maybe Mahara could have a series of first use pop up dialogues to help users know what is possible, starting from a privacy first stance as with other Mahara features. Included in this patch: - Each activity type can specify a default notification method. They default to 'email' to remain backwards compatible. - Each activity type can specify if it is allowed to be set to 'none'. Defaults to 'allowed' for backwards compatibility. - Removed 'required' from notification settings - it didn't make sense, and the change above deals with this in a better way. - The site wide defaults for each activity type can be edited in Site options - Notification settings. These are applied to new users or whenever a user does not have the appropriate usr_activity_preference records. - There is a separate help next to each activity type to explain what messages will be affected by the setting. The following additional changes were made internally to allow the above: - Most activity types can now be set to 'none'. We feel that only user to user and system messages should be enforeced and everything else should be optional. - The way 'none' is handled was changed. A missing usr_activity_preference record indicates that the settings has not yet been set, so the default should be user. Null method indicates 'none' was selected. - The function pieform_get_help was modified to check for element fields 'helpplugintype', 'helppluginname' and 'helpformname' so that the notification settings form elements could be reused in the site options. (We want to use the same help files on more than one form, but the help files are saved with the form name, so we had to allow the form name to be specified for the help). Activity type plugin authors should be aware of the following changes: - 'enablenonemethod' and 'defaultmethod' are values that can be specified when specifying an activity type. Both are optional. - Help files can be specified for each activity type. The help files can be placed in the plugin's subfolder (e.g. artefact/myplugin/lang/...). [Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1423793] Re: Where to direct users when they are done editing a pag?
Currently, when you click the Done button, you are taken back to your pages overview. If that is not an action that users want to take but rather want to display their page, we could change the Done button into Display page. That would be useful for long pages when you don't want to scroll all the way up again in order to click the Display page tab. I would be hesitant though to replicate all tabs from the top at the bottom. If all those links should be present at all times, I think a different solution should be thought that keeps them available no matter where you are on the screen like the content chooser panel. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Mahara Contributors, which is subscribed to Mahara. Clicking 'Done' at bottom of page brings me back to list of pages and I have to find the page again and click it. This is why I tend to ignore this button completely. [Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1394830] Re: Allow secret URL even when public pages are not allowed
The user option for noindex sounds the best as the site admin or institution admin can't foresee what a user wants. Though thinking of smaller children, they may not completely understand what the option is for and thus, a noindex option could be forced. This brings up the question also that we should consider public pages for certain roles, e.g. don't allow public pages for regular users, but for staff and admin. I filed wishlist item bug#1429325 for that. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Mahara Contributors, which is subscribed to Mahara. [Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1429325] [NEW] Allow public pages for staff and admins only
Public bug reported: When you use Mahara with a range of different age groups, you may prevent certain ages from creating public pages so that they don't share their pages accidentally with the public, e.g. young children who don't look at the sharing options carefully. I propose we be more granular in who can create public pages and public profiles on the institution level: - everyone - staff and admins only Ideally, an admin could overwrite the setting for individual trusted regular users as well so that they don't need to be given the staff role as that comes with more privileges. And now it's looking more and more like being able to create other roles and be able to manage permissions more like Moodle manages capabilities... Curently, roles are hard-coded in Mahara and thus that would need to change first. ** Affects: mahara Importance: Wishlist Status: Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Mahara Contributors, which is subscribed to Mahara. User changed their email to paula.ap...@fruits.nz in Moodle. This email address was added to Mahara. 4. User changed email domains to paula.ap...@flora.nz in Moodle. This email address was added to Mahara. User's primary email address is still paula.wal...@nuts.nz although the only one in use is paula.ap...@flora.nz. User cannot change the primary email address or delete obsolete ones because the account is managed by MNet. MNet is set up to update user information upon login, but that doesn't seem to delete email addresses that are not in use anymore. [Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1363742] Re: Submit a group page to a group
If there are several study groups, I would keep those separate and not have all students in one group. Deciding who can submit: I would not worry too much about that at the moment and see if it caused a problem that a student would submit a piece of work and another student in the same group wouldn't have just yet. Students could communicate about that. In Moodle, I'm not aware of a setting that would require all group members to give their OK for submitting an assignment for example. Anything more complicated could be added if needed at a later stage. I would give a different info text though right before the submission so that it says specifically that it's a group page / collection that is being submitted and that the other group members won't be able to edit it either. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Mahara Contributors, which is subscribed to Mahara. Wouldn't the same be true for any files that you include in a portfolio that are not in the area where you work, e.g. personal portfolio or group? Matching subscriptions: Subscription for all Mahara Contributors -- please ask on #mahara-dev or mahara.org forum before editing or unsubscribing it! https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1427046 Title: Improving ADODB speed Status in Mahara ePortfolio: Fix Committed Bug description: To make ADODB function faster I found the following information: -- High Speed ADOdb ADOdb is a big class library, yet it consistently beats all other PHP class libraries in performance. This is because it is designed in a layered fashion, like an onion, with the fastest functions in the innermost layer. Stick to the following functions for best performance: Innermost Layer Connect, PConnect, NConnect Execute, CacheExecute SelectLimit, CacheSelectLimit MoveNext, Close qstr, Affected_Rows, Insert_ID The fastest way to access the fields is by accessing the array $recordset-fields directly. Also set the global variables $ADODB_FETCH_MODE = ADODB_FETCH_NUM, and $ADODB_COUNTRECS = false before you connect to your database. Consider using bind parameters if your database supports it, as it improves query plan reuse. Use ADOdb's performance tuning system to identify bottlenecks quickly. Installing the ADOdb C extension will speed up GetAll() and GetArray() by 100%, and GetAssoc() by 30%. It will also speed up oci8 select statements by 30%. Lastly make sure you have a PHP accelerator cache installed such as APC, Turck MMCache, Zend Accelerator or ionCube. Advanced Tips If you have the ADOdb C extension installed, you can replace your calls to $rs-MoveNext() with adodb_movenext($rs). This doubles the speed of this operation. For retrieving entire recordsets at once, use GetArray(), which uses the high speed extension function adodb_getall() internally. Execute() is the default way to run queries. You can use the low-level functions _Execute() and _query() to reduce query overhead. Both these functions share the same parameters as Execute(). If you do not have any bind parameters or your database supports binding (without emulation), then you can call _Execute() directly. Calling this function bypasses bind emulation. Debugging is still supported in _Execute(). If you do not require debugging facilities nor emulated binding, and do not require a recordset to be returned, then you can call _query. This is great for inserts, updates and deletes. Calling this function bypasses emulated binding, debugging, and recordset handling. Either the resultid, true or false are returned by _query(). If not enough time, for now, a flag in site options page that can be pulled out later into its own smartevidence plugin. * A site administrator can turn on the “SmartEvidence” functionality for the entire site, e.g. enabling a plugin. Once allowed in general, institution administrators can decide whether to allow “SmartEvidence” in their institutions or not. The functionality needs to be turned on specifically, as it will add a lot of functionality, at least one menu item etc. to the Mahara instance. Once the functionality has been turned on and changes have been made either on the site or institution level, it cannot be turned off anymore. 3 - Institution configuration to enable SmartEvidence for an institution. * Still need to work out affect on users with multiple institutions (who are admins in one but not the others). 4 - New Admin menu for 'Smart Evidence': * New menu item in Administration – 'Smart Evidence'. With sub-menu 'Page Categories' – like group categories page. * Menu will appear only if Smartevidence plugin is installed. * For institutions, will appear if institution has switched on the flag. 5 - Page/Collection Category : * New fixed system category 'SmartEvidence'. * Site administrators can set up categories for pages and collections similarly to the concept of group categories. * The category “SmartEvidence” is provided by default when the site administrator allowed the functionality in general and can only be selected and seen by site and institution administrators when they create institution or site pages / collections as these pages and collections will need to be set up on the institution or site level. Institution administrators only see the category when their institution allows “SmartEvidence”. * Only institution and site administrators will be able to see the category chooser when creating pages and collections. * Pages and collections get categories added so that it will be easier in the future to categorize pages and collections To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/mahara/+bug/1409546/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~mahara-contributors Post to : mahara-contributors@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~mahara-contributors More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

But the utility of this is limited because the view.mtime column is only updated when the view's description or tags are updated. What we should do is update view.mtime whenever the view's contents (i.e. its blocks, or its block contents) are updated. Each semester, students share pages with the group while they are in the course. However, when they leave the course (and the group) they do not un- share the pages, and consequently the Pages shared with this group list gets longer and longer, and it's hard to see the pages specifically shared by students this term. The solution we've decided on for this problem, is to add an option to the Group pages block, to allow it to only show pages shared by members of the group. [Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1419532] Re: Add width and Height attributes to img tag in image blocks so they'll flow to the right size immediately
The problem though I think is that users will not know what the correct dimensions should be. You would also have the re-adjust them when the block size changes. Currently, you don't have to provide a width in the image block and the size is adjusted to fit the block size. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Mahara Contributors, which is subscribed to Mahara.
