[Mailman-Users] Mailman 2.1b2 installed and working (almost).

2002-05-23 Thread Rob Brandt

I've gotten Mailman 2.1b2 installed on my new linux server. It's using
Postfix as an MTA. I can create lists, but an error is generated. The
list does exists, and I can edit it and everything. But it seems that
there's a problem with creating aliases for it. See the error page pasted
in below.

I suspect that it's a permissions problem, but at this late time of night,
I can no longer see the forest for the trees. Initially I did get in the
infamous 'wanted uid 99, got 48' error. Miraculously, I remember getting
that when I installed v2.05 last summer, and the solution to run apache as
uid/gid nobody. Here's the error page:

Bug in Mailman version 2.1b2

We're sorry, we hit a bug!

If you would like to help us identify the problem, please email a copy of
this page to the webmaster for this site with a description of what
happened. Thanks!

Dan,

I am really interested in this as well. I would like it if there was a
way to auto unsubscribe after a period of designated time, like join for
a week, month year or indefinetly. If you find anything please let me
know. If we write any code here at affero I'll post it to the list.

You could try 'formail'. Something like:
(formail -kbrt ; echo "The list is temporarily closed." ;echo "";) |
/usr/lib/sendmail -oi -t

[Mailman-Users] List closed option

2002-05-23 Thread Danny Terweij

Hi,

There are some list admins that wants the list closed for a while when they
are on a long vacation. So that no members can post to the list.

I am thinking of the following :

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wants to be closed a while.
So i as a site admin wants to do this :

etc/aliases

Change:
testlist "|\usr\local\vacation\closed"

The closed script must write a message back to the sender that the list is
closed for a while. But how to do this? can someone help me?

Danny.

[Mailman-Users] Forbidden posters doesn't ...

2002-05-23 Thread William Waggoner

Mailman 2.0.8

I put a name into the forbidden posters list (Privacy Options: "Addresses
whose postings are always held for approval",) hoping that I would get a
notice and it would be held if that "person" posted again. Today a new
message came in and it went right through.

I had copied the address directly from the last message that came in,
including upper and lower case. I did NOT include any comments or brackets,
just the email address itself. Is there another trick to it?

The address I am trying to stop is: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
because they send out a small SPAM advert once a month or so just because
someone sent one of their greeting cards to the list once or twice.

newlist -o /etc/mail/aliases (everything gets APPENDED)

NOTE: this will _also_ output the aliases to standard output

Re: [Mailman-Users] Not creating users?? (new install question)

2002-05-23 Thread Mark Rauterkus

Hi,

Grant asked:
> What have I missed that allows Mailman to create users??

aliases.

I do this:

On telnet session:
% newlist -o LISTNAME

Then a set of lines like this appears in the telnet window and an output
file is made in the same directory.

- - - snip starts - - -

## LISTNAME mailing list
## created: 23-May-2002 username
LISTNAME: "|/usr/local/mailman/mail/wrapper post LISTNAME"
LISTNAME-admin: "|/usr/local/mailman/mail/wrapper mailowner LISTNAME"
LISTNAME-request: "|/usr/local/mailman/mail/wrapper mailcmd LISTNAME"
LISTNAME-owner: LISTNAME-admin

- - - end snip - - -

Then, that info needs to be put into your sendmail file, "aliases". Then,
you need to run "vnewalises".

Then it should work.

My question for the *nix pros ---
How do you easily patch the contents of the output file (-o) into the
aliases file? The cut and paste is a drag with pico, and the word wrap is a
pain.

[Mailman-Users] Not creating users?? (new install question)

2002-05-23 Thread Grant Cummings

I have installed Mailman 2.0.8 via the RPM from Redhat on a server running
Redhat 7.1

The install went fine, web interface works, I can set up new lists, add
users from the website, it mails out a confirmation email, BUT when I go to
send mail to the list, Sendmail bounces back telling me it's not a valid
user. Sendmail is at version 8.11.6

What have I missed that allows Mailman to create users??

Thanks!

Robb,

I'm pretty sure this is related to a bug with suexec and cgid in Apache
2 (though i could be wrong). A developer on one of the systems here in
DCU has written some patches that should be part of the apache 2.0.37
release.

In the meantime, these patches are available here:

or you can mail Colm directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED] for more info.

You have to insert it before the list software catches it. It appears

[Mailman-Users] Python Upgrade problem with mailman

2002-05-23 Thread Webmaster

Very critical does anyone know if Pytnon 2.1 will work with mailman
2.0.11, (problems with
my production mailing lists)

Explanation below:

I've install mailman 2.0.11 on Red Hat 7.2 and it was working fine
until
I upgrade to Python 2.1. Once I upgraded to this version everything
seemed fine for 5 hours. I was able to receive messages from my mailing

lists at our University. The Web Interface administrator options for
the
lists all worked fine. Then messages started piling in "qfiles" and it
would not send anymore messages out. I moved them out of the queue and
started moving them back in one at a time and then again the messages
seemed to be sent properly, but then they started piling back up in the

qfiles directory again . Here is the errors I received in the "error"

logfile. I'm not totally efficient on Python yet, so I would like some
help I would appreciate it. (Quite a few messages on CORRUPTED ARCHIVES

 and module regex not found)

tells subscribers how to post, etc... which is what bothers me. I know from
combing through the archives that there is no way to fix this without access
to the config files but is there an alternate solution or does anyone know
if Mm 2.1 will offer an option for editing the whole welcome message?

Thanks!
Benjamin

Create a moderated list (moderator must approve all posts), and then
list the one person who can post in "Addresses of members accepted for
posting to this list without implicit approval requirement".

Re: [Mailman-Users] Trouble with new mailman 2.1 install

Working too late again - I had forgotten that I had uninstalled
python-devel a hour or two prior to this. Installed it again, all is
well.

I got it to work with Python 2.2.1 but this one was built from source
on Solaris 8 and I remember having to uncomment a lot of modules at
the Modules/Setup file before the build. Also, I needed to patch the
Mailman/Bouncers/Catchall.py file because 'regex' didn't seem to be
there to include (maybe I missed something but anyway I didn't think
it worthwhile to figure out how to get 'regex' included if it's
obsolete and only one module of Mailman needs it.) I posted the patch
to the Mailman developers' list earlier this month but I can send it
if you can't find it and are interested.

[Mailman-Users] Mail questions-unsubscribing and mass subscribing

2002-05-23 Thread Dan Crane

I have just started a new list using Mailman, hosted
on pair.com, and I want to know if there is a quick
way for users to unsubscribe, without going to the
admin page. For example, is there a command that can
be added to the email address or subject line that
would auto-unsubscribe a member from the list?

I have looked through the FAQs and documentation and
cannot find any info on this.

Also, if you mass subscribe members (I am migrating my
list from another service) how are password assigned?

Thanks for your help!

[Mailman-Users] CGI-GID problem (wanted 99, got -1)

2002-05-23 Thread Robb Anderson

I've been reading through all the documentation for both Mailman and apache
and can't seem to figure this out. i also couldn't find anything in the
archives

I'm running Redhat 7.3, Mailman 2.0.11, and Apache 2.

i compiled both apache and mailman from source code and made all the changes
to permissions and added the lines to the files as specified in the Mailman
install docs. when i get to the end and create a newlist the message gets
sent out and when i go to the page specified in the E-mail i get the CGI-GID
error page. expected 99 got -1 (reconfigure to take -1?) so i went back
did make clean and then did a ./configure setting the cgi-GID to be -1 and
it tells me no such group exists, so i tried GID apache, no such group
again. i was about to try nobody, which is the group that apache seems to
be running under (it's definitely the user anyway) but that GID is 99.
which is what it expected to begin with.

anyone able to help me or point me towards some Docs that will help me solve
this problem, I'm having no luck finding anything.

TIA
Robb

RE: [Mailman-Users] Read-Only Mailing Lists

2002-05-23 Thread Bill Poff

JC,

I've looked and looked and cannot find "Addresses of members accepted for
posting to this list without implicit approval requirement".

I'm using version 2.1b1 are you looking at a different version?

I feel that all of the "read-Only" parameters should be put in one place on
the menu. There is a lot of confusion among users about the configuration of
a read-only list and this might help answer some of those questions.

At our shop, about 75% of the lists are read-only. I feel that a significant
number of users have/need read-only lists. Let's make it a little easier for
these folks.

great ... how embarrassing ...

just had a look at: Mailman FAQ: http://www.python.org/cgi-bin/faqw-mm.py

which is a different faq than the one I looked at .. and the very first
entry is: 1.11. How do I make the archives searchable

I apologize for taking your time and bandwidth ... and will shut up
again now :/

[Mailman-Users] search on archive

2002-05-23 Thread Martin Stenkilde

Hello mailman-users,

I am new to this list, and hope I am not asking something obvious or
something covered in the FAQ's - but although I have looked I have been unable
to find the answer - so here goes :)

I have configured and is running mailman (what a awesome product) on a
redhat linux box, and its talking toa news server as well ... all that
works perfect.

Question: how do I add a search functionality to my e-mail archive ?
(such as http://www.htdig.org) - any how-to's or ideas are welcome :P

Thank you,
Martin

ps: if such a search engine was already on www.list.org, I might not
have needed to ask at all :)
