Grrr...

You know how it says in the INSTALL file:
"By default, the value is the list `mailman other mail daemon'."

That appears to be wrong. In the Makefile, it only said "mailman".

[Mailman-Users] Block "out off office" autoreply messages

2004-08-23 Thread Luis Fernando C. Talora
Friends,

I´m having trouble with out of office autoreply messages sent to some list.
Some users recieved a lot of them, because of some list member who didn´t
know that you must not use out of office messages if you are member of
mailing lists.

Is Mailman capable of blocking this kind of message?

Thank you again!

[Mailman-Users] Investigating Bounces

2004-08-23 Thread Ed Greenberg
I have several list owners with large lists. They get a bunch of bounces
each time they mail. Occasionally, they get lots more bounces than they
expect.

Is there any way to get Mailman to save the reason for the bounce?
The bounce log contains only the list name, email address and the bounce
score. I can infer whether the bounce was hard or soft by whether the score
increased by 1.0 or 0.5. There is no way to tell if the bounce was "mailbox
full" or "no such user" or perhaps my SMTP server was refused
because it's become blacklisted somewhere. It's not even possible to tell
if the bounce came from the distant SMTP server or my local one.

How do others deal with this situation?

[Mailman-Users] False Moderator Requests?

2004-08-23 Thread Mike Cullum
Greetings,

We have just begun using mailman and are discovering it's mysteries. Please
be patient with ignorant questions!

I have a dozen lists, none actively used yet, that are set up ready to
convert people from our old list processor. This morning each list sent an
email from the "listhame-bounces" address to the "listname-owner" with the
following message:

--
>The [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list has -1 request(s) waiting for your
>consideration at:
>
>http://domain/mailman/admindb/listname

>Please attend to this at your earliest convenience. This notice of
>pending requests, if any, will be sent out daily.
--

When I go to the URL and try to resolve the waiting request I encounter the
following message:

--
>Database Updated...
>
>Administrative requests for mailing list: Listname
>
>This page contains a summary of the current set of administrative requests
>requiring your approval for the Listname mailing list. First, you will find the
>list of pending subscription and unsubscription requests, if any, followed by
>any postings being held for your approval.
>
>For each administrative request, please select the action to take, clicking on
>the Submit All Data button when finished. More detailed instructions are also
>available.
>
>You can also view the details of all held postings.
--

As far as I can see there are NO requests waiting for the moderator and
nothing to resolve.

What's going on?

Thanks in advance for the assistance.

It's not autoresponders generally that are the problem...it is poorly
written ones which don't know how to avoid sending to list messages. Often
it's people using MUA rules or self-written scripts.

You can try with content filters, but the creators of these bad
autoresponders are endlessly creative.

As list owner, you are: unsubscribe the errant user (or if you insist on
being more gentle, mark the user as Nomail). Send whatever explanation you
feel is appropriate.

Not in advance as far as I know. After the fact, the list admin can
always disable delivery to the offending user.

It's a bug in the present version of Mailman. Arrange for each list to have
a real message which needs the moderator's attention, and deal with that.
Things will be OK after that.

You could set the moderation (mod) bit, under 'Membership Management'
for the offending list member(s) until they turn off their autoreply.
There is also a spam filter under 'Privacy options' in the admin web
interface.

That's not necessarily so. Properly written auto-responders do not pose
a threat to mailing lists.

Unfortunately the one people use the most (the one in Outlook/OE) is
about as broken as they come.

Is Mailman capable of blocking this kind of message?
You can play around with the spam filtering to catch a lot of these
messages. IMHO, it's best to just stop munging the Reply-To. See this

[Mailman-Users] From a computer-numbskull who needs a Rosetta Stone

2004-08-23 Thread Dr. Irving David Shapiro
Hi!
I was referred to your site by a nice guy at our ISP who thinks you
might be able to help us. So I logged on. Now I know what it feels like
when you're in Rome but can't talk like the Romans do (to analogize an
old proverb).

Now please don't get me wrong -- I think you're site is wonderful. I'm
just not sufficiently computer-literate to make heads or tails of it.

Anyway, here goes.
We have a collection of some 170 essays that we want to send out in the
form of e-mail messages, starting with our current e-mail address list,
one at a time, weekly. I've attached a generic pdf file (done in
PageMaker, but we'll have it converted to HTML when we're ready to go),
generic in the sense that it'll be exactly the same in each mailing
except that the essay title, the essay itself, and the related quotation
will be different. The TO: field should show only the name of the
recipient and the FROM: field should be Mens Sana Foundation although
the Mens Sana Foundation doesn't have an e-mail address per se -- I do.

Please now focus on the bottom of the attached file. The four buttons
you see will (obviously) be at the bottom of each e-mail message that'll
be sent out during this campaign. The two middle ones are for the
purpose of unsubscribing and subscribing, respectively. So not only
would you have to send out the e-mails weekly (every Sunday night) if we
sign up with you, but you'd also have to delete and add e-mail addresses
to our list as people unsubscribe and subscribe.

Another thing. Whenever someone subscribes, we would want a message
(that we would provide you with) to be automatically sent to him or her.
The same would be true for anyone who unsubscribes (a different message,
or course).

And finally, could every message open with a voice greeting?
OK, having given you the specs, more or less, the big question: can we
do all the foregoing with Mailman? Also, assuming that the answer is
"Yes," given that we're a 501(c)(3) (which means there's never any money
around here to hire help) and given that my grandchildren know
infinitely more about computers and the Internet than I'll ever know but
they never have enough time to help out Grandpa, is there someone there
who'd be willing to take us under his/her wing all the way through the
process until we can do it ourselves without worrying about the outcome?

Gratefully,
Dr. Shapiro

[Mailman-Users] domain equivalence

2004-08-23 Thread Toby Butzon
Hi all,

Here's my situation:

a.example.com runs mailman.
b.example.com hosts 90% of a.example.com's subsriber's addresses
(i.e., 90% of my subscribers have [EMAIL PROTECTED] email addresses).
c.example.com is a legacy system now setup to forward all incoming
mail to the newer b.example.com system. Many users from the old system
still prefer their [EMAIL PROTECTED] address and continue to use it.

So, effectively, a mail account [EMAIL PROTECTED] is reachable as either
   [EMAIL PROTECTED], or
   [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Obviously, if we turn on "subscribers only" posting on a list, people posting
from c when subscribed as a b user gets his messages held for
approval.

Additionally, users can send mail via multiple interfaces -- secure shell into
c (which still shows their from host as c), a webmail system on
b (which uses a from host of b), and remote SMTP clients (and
users can "correctly" set it up to use either b or c). The point of
all this detail is to make the point that users are *not* incorrectly
subscribed; rather, because the configurations are out of their hands, they
become constricted to using one or the other, or wait for moderator approval.

I don't know what the optimal solution would be, but my first guess would be
to add a way to "alias" domains so that b and c are seen as equal by
that particular filtering step. I don't know what other cases domain name
comparisons occur in, but there might be other cases where the same comparison
is desirable, and yet it might not be in all.

If there's already a good way to work around this issue, fill me in.
Otherwise, I'll have to see about coming up with a workaround myself (probably
using the method I just described) -- but before I do, I'd like to hear any
comments you have about whether that's the right way to go about fixing the
problem.

Thanks in advance.

When I send an email to the list I successfully setup, I receive this error:

On Aug 23, 2004, at 8:57 AM, Jeff Barger wrote:

You can play around with the spam filtering to catch a lot of these
messages. IMHO, it's best to just stop munging the Reply-To. See this
page: .

true. if you're coercing reply-to, you're funnelling all of that
traffic onto the list. have fun.

As Jeff noted -- well-behaved vacation bots don't cause a problem,
because they follow the rules and don't send those messages to lists.
The ones that don't -- are broken. And trying to stop them up front
will fail, because they don't follow the rules you could use to catch
them (because if they do follow the rules, they don't send the
messages!). since there are an infinite variation of "out of ..." or
"on vacation" or "away from..." or "etc ..." ways people write those
messages, attempting to string-trap them will simply waste endless
amounts of your time and energy,a dn still fail (leaving you pissed and
frustrated).

Here's how I suggest handling it. In your list policy docs, make it
clear that it's a person's responsibility to use vacation bots
appropriately. my policy is simple: if one shows up on a list, or
sending vacation notices to a list admin or the listserver, that
address is unsubscribed. Immediately. no warnings, no followups. Just
an unsubscribe. it's then the person's responsibiltiy to figure it out
and subscribe again if they want.

If the same address resubscribes, and then we get MORE vacation notices
from it, they're unsubscribed and banned. Users are allowed to make one
mistake and fix it. if they don't, they're not welcome. that gives them
the responsibility ot fix it, and some motivation to do so. if you
don't? they won't.

I wait until the subscription is disabled at which time Mailman sends
me a copy of the bounce message.

I know this isn't necessarily the best solution. For example, the other
day on one list every (I think) AOL subscriber bounced one message and
only one. I'll probably never know why, but I've learned not to obsess

Actually, according to RFC822 (section 3.4.1), spaces are
allowed in email addresses:

Note: In particular, quoting is NOT permitted within
atoms. For example when the local-part of an addr-spec
must contain a special character, a quoted string must be
used. Therefore, a specification such as:

Full\ [EMAIL PROTECTED]

is not legal and must be specified as:

"Full Name"@Domain

Moreover, I've encounted several bone-headed sys admins
that are assigning email addresses that are of this format.

Of course, when I complained to them that they are idiots
for choosing such email addresses, they pointed me to
RFC822. I still think they are idiots...

bin/arch is only intended for importing archives from elsewhere or
rebuilding the archive from scratch (--wipe option). It is not
normally required for day to day archive maintenance.

Presumably at least part of archiving is working since you have a file
for bin/arch to work from (.mbox/.mbox or ?).

Also, at this point your /2004-August/ directory exists even
if it was bin/arch that created it. Do messages (nn.html) get
added? Do the author, date, subject and thread .html files get updated?
How about the /2004-August.txt?

Maybe it's a permission issue?

It depends on what you mean by "superceded". According to STD 1 (RFC

I've been studying RFC2822, and it's even nastier than I
originally thought. :(

Basically, the local part of an email address is called
the "local-part" (sec 3.4.1). The local-part can be one
of three things: dot-atom, quoted-string, or
obs-local-part.

A quoted-string is defined as optional white-space, a
quote, zero or more combinations of white space and qtext
or a quoted pair(s), and finally a quote and optionally
more white space (although there is a note that RFC2822
does not allow white space between the local part and the
'@' character). (sec 3.2.5)

qtext is defined as ASCII characters 33, 35-91, 93-126
(not space, '@' or '\'). (sec 3.2.5) A quoted-pair is a
backslash ('\') followed by any of these ASCII characters:
1-9, 11-12, 14-127 (all characters excluding NULL, CR and
LF). (sec 3.2.2)

This means you can have spaces in email addresses.
Control characters are also allowed (except NULL, CR & LF)
if they are escaped by a backslash.

If the local-part is a quoted-string, it can also span
multiple lines in the headers! So for example, this is
legal:

From: "some really long
 crazy address"@domain.com
Subject: Check out the email address my idiot sys admin gave me!

The From address should be converted to an actual email
address that looks like this internally:

some really long crazy [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I can see some idiot sys admin now dreaming of a way to
assign someone an email address that has a bunch of
backspace characters in it... But how the hell do you
type that into a web form or your email program? If they
really wanted that ability, why wouldn't they escape them
like C does, i.e. "\x08" for a backspace.

If they were going to obsolete RFC822, why would they
leave all this in there??? Who needs control characters
in any email, period?

Pounding head on desk,
John

[Mailman-Users] regular expressions/wildcards in remove_members?

2004-08-23 Thread Adam Steer
Hi All

I'm wondering if it is possible to use regular expressions in
'remove_members'. I have a subscriber who has a curly quote in their
subscribed address - which has thrown the web membership management
interface for the relevant list off the planet, and I haven't been able
to work around it any other way...

The FAQ has an example with a comma - but curly quotes are another
beast entirely

Any clues would be handy!

Thanks

Adam.
