Hi

Good post on Mailman for Panther.

Truth be, I am *so* unimpressed with Apple on their handling of this. May be
it is just a European support issue but they have not one single clue about
how it runs or what happens when it does not - except to sell you their no
guaranty paid for support!

I really get sick of Apple when they make a hullabaloo about woo-woo
Open Source software and then ditch their clients with no support for it
afterwards. Zilch in the kbase last time I looked. You know, for a few
dollars more, they could have made this a truly Apple experience, the
trouble seems to be what with the NeXT guys on one side and the marketing
accountants on the other there is little Apple left! [ ... and all I am
talking about is making pretty and easily customisable ].

I was / am fighting with a Server based version.

Good luck,

John

No. (Not without doing a brute force attack on the sha digest stored

You can set it to something new (through the web interface using the
site password, or from the console).

[Mailman-Users] Installation Error - ImportError: No module named korean

Hi,

'make install' routine is throwing up an error:

Having looked at the archives this seems to be a previous problem,
but should have been resolved?

Also from the archives I have noted that
/usr/local/mailman/pythonlib/ is entirely empty.

My 'configure command is:
./configure --with-mail-gid=admin --with-cgi-gid=mailman
And this does not seem to throw up any errors.

I am installing the latest version - 2.1.5 - from the list.org
website.

Python info:
Python 2.2.2 (#1, Mar 12 2004, 16:44:37)
[GCC 3.2.2 20030217 (Red Hat Linux 8.0 3.2.2-2)] on linux2

I am installing onto a Virtual Server hosted by DSVR in the UK.

Can anyone help??

With thanks,

You haven't created the aliases shown when ran the 'newlist'
command to make a list.

Or, if you are using one of the mail server configurations that
automatically determine the presence of your mailing lists, you
haven't properly configured your mail server. Read the
README.xxx file where xxx is your mailserver. (Also read
the INSTALL document.)

[Mailman-Users] Messages stuck in qfiles

2004-09-03 Thread Hurley, Michael
I'm experiencing some odd behavior with Mailman. All was working fine or so
I thought. I maintain 180 lists and 1000 subscribers.

The system:
SuSE Linux Standard Server 8
Sendmail 8.12.6-159
Mailman 2.0.14-18 (yes, I know it's old, it's what SuSE likes)

The symptoms:
Sendmail passes incoming messages off to the Mailman wrapper, which does
nothing with them. They are piling up (.msg and .db files) in the
~mailman/qfiles dir. There are about three days worth in there.

Anybody know what is up? The qrunner cronjob seems to be running normally, I
can't remember making any changes that would have affected mailman
operations around 3 days ago.

Alternately, is there a way I can flush these messages out manually so they
don't back up too far?

Thanks

[Mailman-Users] Creating an alternate UI to mailman

2004-09-03 Thread Justin Rush
Hi,
I am trying to create a different UI to the mailman interface that meshes
better with the current theme of our site. I had planned on just creating a few php
pages that access the various mailman binaries, mainly just to offer a different
interface to the subscription page, ie. allow users to sign up for multiple mailing
lists at once. I found the subscribe binary, which works fine and even sends a
welcome message out after subscribing a user. However, it does not send out a
confirmation email, which is quite esscential. Has anyone found a way around this?

Hi -
I'm running mailman 2.1.2 on Mandrake 9.2. I copied my lists over from

The lists are all working fine, except no new messages are being added

Now, if I run the bin/arch command on a list, it does update the

Anyone know how I can fix this?

This sounds a lot like a problem discussed last week. See the thread
beginning at
http://mail.python.org/pipermail/mailman-users/2004-August/038917.html
Suggestions were to run bin/check-perms and bin/arch with the --wipe
option. It was apparently fixed by the latter.

Not really. There are certain things (like personalization) that
a site admin can prevent list owners from seeing, and you can set
lots of defaults, but that's about it.

There's no convenient way to go through and have the site admin
to go through each and every option in the package and say yes, I
want them to see this option, no I don't want them to see those, yes
this other one is okay, etc

And yet another option that should be used only when all else

If you are trying to avoid writing any new Python, one trick might be
to have the PHP page submit the original Mailman form rather than
trying to call a binary directly. The PHP script could wait for the
Mailman return page and then create its own results page that is shown
to the end user.

The cleaner method is probably to write a small Python program that
uses the InviteNewMember() method of the mailing list.

As Brad pointed out, you can't enable/disable each of the configuration
options on a one-by-one basis.

You can eliminate entire 'categories' from appearing in the
administrative interface by copying the ADMIN_CATEGORIES list from
Defaults.py into your mm_cfg.py and deleting the categories that you
don't want your list administrators to see. That's an easy way to get
rid of the MailNews Gateway page for example if it is not relevant to
your installation. (It wouldn't prevent the clever/devious
administrator from changing the values, but it removes the temptation
to 'tweak' by pointing and clicking.)
