RE: [Mailman-Users] Newbie questions

2004-10-07 Thread Sheila Hoffman
Mark said This is a per-user setting with a per-list default. The
setting on the user's options page is Get MIME or Plain Text Digests?

Thanks for the pointers Mark. I must be misunderstanding this though. If
it's a per-user setting shouldn't I be able to go into MM Users and
change my own settings? I don't see anywhere to do that. I see where I
can do that in the Admin of my own list. But how can I change my
personal setting in THIS list? I orginally chose digest but I don't want
it in MIME and I see nowhere to edit that preference.

Thanks again for helping a newbie. I've now read through the FAQ.

Sorry my comment was inaccurate. Actually, you can safely skip
the msgerge step when installing. msgmerge is needed for the
translaters but not for the site managers. New Makefile.in
in CVS skips this step if msgmerge is not available or get
some error. You have to install GNU gettext only if you want to
translate and use msgmerge which is included in the GNU distro.
Python gettext.py is included in the mailman distribution.
You can get the latest CVS for the Release_2_1-maint by
$ cvs -z3 -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/mailman \

Well, by deduction and some searching I was able to figure out I needed
gettext. Thanks.
However, it appears gettext needs automake 1.8 and all I can get my hands
on is 1.8b and 1.9. When I try to run make, I get:

You should enter your mail address near the bottom of the listinfo page

[Mailman-Users] Problem with Micrososft Exchange 2003 SBS

2004-10-07 Thread Jan Kellermann
Hello,

please, anybody help.

One of our customers us using a Micrososft Exchange 2003 SBS. Yes, we dont
like it, too.
If this customer send a mail to two lists in to:-field, the mailman
distributes the mail correctly on both lists.
Persons, which are on both lists, get only one email. The problem is, that
the M$-server deletes one mail because they have the same rcpt and
message-id.

We are providing over 200 lists and have no problems at all.
But this customers is sure, that this is a mailman-bug. I need support to
argumentate. Is here anybody who is working with M$-exchange? Or is here
anybody who can proof, that it should be no problem to have 2 mails with
same rcpt and same msg-id?

I found a thread in 2002 describing this problem but not solving. (
http://mail.python.org/pipermail/mailman-users/2002-March/018122.html )

thank you
kelly.

IMO, the real question is why does the customer think it is a problem
to not receive two copies of a message which differ possibly only in
the subject prefix and list specific headers, headings and footers.

Exchange thinks they are two copies of the same message, and in many
respects they are.

If you are going to use software that insists on implementing
Micro$ofts view of how things should work without giving you any
control, then you're stuck with what you get.

Ok, this gets more curious now. I created another list called
Authorized and I put my alternate email address in that list. Then I
changed the test list so so that the accept these non-members had
@authorized. I got one message through but then I could not longer seem
to get into the lists test or authorized via the web interface or via
the command line. So I deleted both of these lists and started fresh.
I created test as a list again but this time I gave my authorized list a
new name, nclack. I then made it so that @nclack was sin the Accept
these non-members. I sent two messages, one as a member of the list
test and then the other as the user I input in the nclack list. I got
no messages at all, so I stopped Mailman and then restarted it. Within
two minutes I had both of my emails. I'm not sure what is going on here
but I found this rather odd.

[Mailman-Users] local network

2004-10-07 Thread Fred Look and Brenda Carson

hi all

has anyone had any experience with contacting the web admin pages using a
local network address

with the earlier version of mailman the users (who also happen to be list
admin ) who were on the local network (behind the router) were able to access
the admin pages by substituting 192.168.x.x instead of the list url and this
all worked fine

after upgrading to 2.1.5 this no longer works as many links seem to be
absolute rather than relative urls

by making an entry in the hosts file of the local machine
192.168.x.xpublic url
we were able to gain access but the authorisation still dosent work correctly
keeps asking for password
 and they cannot add mambers.

any ideas

I can't offhand point to any RFC or other standard practice document
that would help you here, but I can suggest the following argument.

Suppose I am a M$ Exchange user with e-mail address [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I also have a second address [EMAIL PROTECTED] that is set up to forward
all incoming mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Then someone sends an e-mail,
perhaps even using M$ Exchange, addressed to both [EMAIL PROTECTED]
and [EMAIL PROTECTED] These two messages will have the same Subject:,
Date: and Message-Id: headers and my M$ Exchange will delete one of
them as a duplicate of the other. If this behavior is wrong, it must
be M$ Exchange that is wrong in this case since nothing else is
involved other than MTAs which don't change the message. If it is MS
Exchange that is wrong in this case, then why would it not be M$
Exchange that is wrong in the Mailman case?

I don't know if your customer will accept this logic. Perhaps you've
already tried it, but if you haven't, I think it would be worth trying.

Hi,

Ok, you can download individual files from the sourceforge viewcvs
interface. Go to the mailman homepage http://www.list.org/, follow the
links; 'SF Project Page' - 'CVS' - 'Browse CVS Repository' and find
the file for appropriate version. In this case, you must find
message/Makefile.in, Release_2_1-maint. Then click download to get the
latest version file.

It's always possible with enough hacking of the code, but I know of no
