[Mailman-Users] Lyris Vs. Mailman [speed]

2004-10-15 Thread BG Mahesh

hi

I would like to know how many emails can mailman send out in an hour [assume bandwidth
connection is 512k]. This is not for spamming but we have a huge client list and we
need to send out mails. We use lyris but the new version is way too expensive.

Some other questions,

- Is there a maximum number of members per list?
- Can the list hold over 20m users [divided into several lists]?
- If the member email id is bad will some kind of flag be set as "Bad" or "Hold"?

[Mailman-Users] script not found

2004-10-15 Thread Moussa Fall
I am using RH9 with Postfix and Mailman 2.1.1.
No problem for installation and for creating first list (mailman).
After I created a new list, I went to the browser to configure it on the admin page. I
got the first page fine. After selecting the options, I wanted to save them and got on
my browser the error msg "Object not found".
I checked the Apache error log and found the message: "script not found or unable to
stat: /var/mailman/cgi-bin/mailman. I found nothing on that directory.
Any clue to solve this?
Thank you.

See my previous reply to most of these questions at
http://mail.python.org/pipermail/mailman-users/2004-October/040104.html

You probably didn't receive it because I sent it to you as well as the
list (which I'm not doing this time) and if you are set to not receive
duplicates, you wouldn't have been sent a copy from the list. Last I
checked, the message to you (and shiva.kumar) was deferred because my
server was timing out trying to connect to yours.

Sa far as list size is concerned, see
http://www.python.org/cgi-bin/faqw-mm.py?query=list+size&querytype=allkeywords&casefold=yes&req=search

[Mailman-Users] Way to suspend e-mail deliver for 24 hours?

2004-10-15 Thread Mark Epstein
There are times where I would like to suspend e-mail delivery. I would
like posters to post, and get an auto-reply that their mail is being held
for 24 hours to be delivered. I have some basic understanding of Linux, and
don't mind setting up a cron job that activates the suspension/auto reply
mechanishm, and then restores operation to normal 24 hours later
(releasing any mail in the queue). But I don't know how to change list
settings from a shell script, or how to queue mail up similar to the
moderation queue, but instead have it be released by a shell script.

Thanks!

[Mailman-Users] Fw: script not found

2004-10-15 Thread Moussa Fall
I realise that the problem is the following. Whenever I want to go another page my
browser adds mailman in the url. For example from www.dom.ain/mailman/mylist/admin,
after editing options when I want to save changes, the browser points to :
www.dom.ain/mailman/mailman/mylist/general.
Of course, this does not work. When I remove 1 mailman from the url it works. How
can I change that behavior?

[Mailman-Users] trouble with unsubscribed user

2004-10-15 Thread Doug Garaux
I have a MM 2.1.5 install that I've had various troubles with. The list
was manually transferred from another ISP to a new dedicated server
environment. I was unable to transfer the list by documented methods
since I could not access mailman command from a unix shell so I created
the list on the new server and manually dumped all the users from the
old list and mass subscribed them on the new server. As most of the
users don't configure their own settings it was a good enough trade off.
I however have had a few issues. One is a bounce I receive for a
invalid email (invalid user at site..) I manually unsubscribed the user
but MM is still sending emails to this email address. I have no clue
why as I don't see the email under membership management in the web GUI.
The other issue I've had is with the users who were not required to be
moderated. I have unset the moderation box for one email so they do not
have to approve (their own) emails when they post but MM is still asking
for all of their (and all others which is correct behavior there) to be
moderated. How can I verify that this users posts are not requiring
moderation?
The settings from the webgui are basically identical from old server to
new server. The only difference I know of is the old server was a
CPANEL installed mailman instance and the new server is a PLESK
installed instance of mailman.
Thanks!

[Mailman-Users] Configuration back to to ascii config file?

2004-10-15 Thread Mauricio Tavares
Let's see if I make sense. I know I can create a mailing list config
file as an ascii file and then feed it in (I forgot the name of the
command so I am not going to worry about it) to the mailing list to
create its binary config file. When I go to the admin page, I can also
change its settings. But, let's say I come up with really neat settings
and would like to apply them to a few more mailing lists. Is there a way
I can save the configuration of a given mailing list back to an ascii
file so I can do any minor changes and feed it to the other lists?

Hi,
I'm having problems with mail service in the Mail Server. I opened

What I saw was the Mailing Lists is Disabled under the Overview tab but
actually the Mailing Lists is Enabled which is under the Settings tab.
Here is the another problem, when i create a new mailing lists and add
new email subscribers into mailing lists , the mailing lists didn't
work. So what my boss did was he terminal mode to use Unix command to

Re: [Mailman-Users] Listserv

2004-10-15 Thread John Hamlin
I've attached an example excel version of a mailman list. Column E is in
exactly the correct format for a cut & paste insertion into Mailman web
Mass Subscription form. That column can also be saved as a notepad file
and then imported to Mailman. This approach saved my bacon when a former
host went belly-up and I had to move to a new host and recreate
everything from this file, my only backup!

If you are using a Mailman 2.1.x version, each subscriber's entry
can include a full name.

You can list the members using the bin/list_members program
from the shell prompt on your Mailman server. (Use the
--fullnames option to include the members' names.)

If you don't have shell access on the server, you can use a
script to visit the list administration pages and build a
list of subscribers. (It also has a --fullnames option.)

[Mailman-Users] If a newbie doesn't want to handle hardware

2004-10-15 Thread ad

Hi,

I am new to running a list and do not want to handle a server, or an 'always
on' computer. I do not want to handle any hardware - I just want to add people
or drop people, and handle member issues.

Do you recommend a service that is affordable that will let me manage a list
by email and web, but without me having to deal with the server hardware list?

I already know about LSOFT listserv and I seek to shop for price.

[Mailman-Users] Setup Question on changed domain....?

2004-10-15 Thread Dr. Jones
When I set up mail man for a couple news lists, I had a domain
registered through my current ISP. I have since dropped that domain, but
still have the same ISP. When I go to send to any of the lists I am
managing, naturally, the mail goes nowhere since that domain is gone. I
have three other domains registered, though not with my current ISP.

How do I get Mailman to work with one of my other three domain names, so
that the mail lists will resume working?

[Mailman-Users] Newbie Question -- Attachments (again)

2004-10-15 Thread Newman, Linda (newmanld)
I have read through the FAQ and tried to locate every piece of information I
could about MIME types and attachments, esp. reading 4.39, and I'm still
confused, so am hoping that others can provide some simple clarification.

What I'd like to do:
   1) Prevent all attachments from going through. (Note that if my settings
below are too broad and will result in rejecting messages that aren't really
attachments, let me know.)
   2) Accept html, or real text format formatted messages without
translating them to plain text. However, if this means that other formats
such as pdf, word, etc., would also have to be accepted, than I'd give up on
html.
   3) Send a notice automatically to a sender if their attachment has been
rejected.
   4) Send the remaining plain text part of the message to the list without
the attachment.

My current 'Content Filtering' options (see below) are rejecting attachments
and html-formatted messages. The entire message is rejected -- even if
there are remaining plain text parts. RTF formatted messages are, however,
converted to plain text. No notice of a rejection is sent to the poster, so
I've configured the last option to send the message to the e-list owner, so
that the owner could manually notify users.

Note that I don't seem to have access to the unix shell.

My current list Content Filtering options are as follows:

Should Mailman filter the content of list traffic according to the settings
below? -- Yes

Remove message attachments that have a matching content type.
Remove message attachments that don't have a matching content type. -- I've
listed two types -- text/plain text/html
Should Mailman convert text/html parts to plain text? No
Action to take when a message matches the content filtering rules. Forward
to List Owner
Thank you for any clarification!

The distribution file tests/msgs/nimda.txt is identified by McAfee
(scan engine 4320, definitions 4398) as containing Exploit-MIME.gen.c.
It doesn't really contain the worm, but judging from its name and
location it is designed to be detected as a test of something.

[Mailman-Users] RE: Newbie Question -- Attachments (again)

2004-10-15 Thread Newman, Linda (newmanld)
Follow-up to my earlier question (below).

I went back and put back in the defaults for "Remove message attachments
that don't have a matching content type." These are now set to:
multipart/mixed
multipart/alternative
text/plain

Attachments such as word documents and pdf documents are still being
rejected, which I'm pleased about. HTML-formatted messages are now being
converted to plain text (despite answering that question 'No' -- see below),
and this is better than the messages being rejected. Messages that have
attachments but also have remaining plain text parts are now being sent to
the list without the attachment, instead of being rejected completely, so
this is better. I'm left wondering:

1) What kind of attachments are allowed by 'multipart/mixed' and
'multipart/alternative'?

2) Why are html formatted messages still translated to plain text even
though I've answered 'No' to the option "Should Mailman convert text/html
parts to plain text?"

Again, any answers or information are appreciated.

Re: [Mailman-Users] Configuration back to to ascii config file?

2004-10-15 Thread Jeff Pflueger
So then: Are the command line scripts the best way to create a duplicate
set of configurations, mailing list lists, and list members on another
mailman running on another server, or is it possible (and preferable) to
figure out which mailman files should be copied over to the second
server to create the duplicate settings, lists, and members?

If I were automating this process would I rsync the specific files, or
write a cron script to run the various python scripts, send them over to
the other server and then have the other server run a cron script to
import the settings, lists and members

Thanks,
Jeff

You can do this, but I don't think you can get a reject notice to the
poster in this case.

This will only work if the entire message is filtered and nothing is
left for the list.

Right.

>listed two types -- text/plain text/html

This won't work. It's too restrictive it will only allow single part
messages whose content-type is text/html or text/plain. You also need
to allow the text/plain and/or text/html parts from multipart
messages. Thus you must add to the above types

multipart/mixed
multipart/alternative

Also, you may wish to add

message/rfc822

to allow text/plain and text/html parts from some forwarded messages.

Note that allowing these types does not allow the entire multipart
through, it just alows its sub-parts to be examined rather than
deleted.

Further, note that if the message contains a multipart/alternative part
with both a text/plain alternative and a text/html alternative, only
the first alternative which is always supposed to be the text/plain
part.

To get HTML through to the list you either have to disallow text/plain
or make sure the HTML is not in a multipart/alternative part with a
text/plain alternative. This is difficult if not impossible to do with
some MUAs.

No they're not. Se my remarks about multipart/alternative in my reply
to your previous post.

Allowing those types does not allow any attachment type per se. It just
allows the sub-parts within the multipart message to be examined
rather than the whole multipart part being deleted.

BTW, I didn't mention previously, but you might consider passing
multipart/related as well although it probably won't work as you would
like. Multipart/related is usually used for things like entire web
pages and might include a text/html part and various image/gif and/or
image/jpeg parts that are referenced by the HTML. If you wanted to
allow something like this, you'd get the HTML without the images, etc
which may or may not be something you'd want on your list.

>2) Why are html formatted messages still translated to plain text even
>though I've answered 'No' to the option "Should Mailman convert text/html

They aren't. The text/plain alternative is being selected in favor of
the text/html. See prior post.

RE: [Mailman-Users] Newbie Question -- Attachments (again)

2004-10-15 Thread Newman, Linda (newmanld)
Mark -- I really appreciate your answers to my questions.

I now have the following 'pass types' allowed:
  multipart/mixed
  multipart/alternative
  text/plain
  text/html
  message/rfc822

This appears to handle plain text messages, and forwarded plain text
messages, while still dis-allowing attachments that are word files or pdf
files, executables, etc. It also continues to translate html messages into
plain text, but if I understand your answer below, this is because the first
part of a multipart/alternative message is usually plain text, and so that's
what mailman accepts. So, it appears that if I want html formatted messages
to also be on this list, while of course also still allowing plain text, I'd
have to either
   a) find an MUA that doesn't send html as multipart, but just as html
(suggestions?)
   b) not do any filtering of attachments.

Let me know if I have mis-understood.

Right. It isn't translating HTML to plain text. It is selecting the
text/plain part over the text/html part from a multipart alternative
message.

BTW, i left out a phrase in

>Further, note that if the message contains a multipart/alternative part

It should have said "only the first alternative ... is retained for the
list", but you seem to have understood it anyway.

You appear to understand perfectly. Regarding a), Netscape/Mozilla for
example allows you to choose whether to send HTML vs
multipart/alternative in various ways - globally, by address book
entry, by domain, by asking.

As far as I know, M$ lookout (er.. outlook) express allows you to
specify plain text in address books, but if you want to send HTML, it
always sends multipart/alternative. I think outlook (not express) may
send HTML only, but I can't tell you how to set it up. Normally I'm
only interested in setting things to not send any HTML.

This is a different question. The original question was how to transfer
the settings from one list to another. Your question, is if I
understand, how best to back up a Mailman installation on another
server.

I'm not sure of the best way to do this. You could just sync the files
in the lists/ and archives/ directories. This may be sufficient, but
you may also want to consider qfiles/

[Mailman-Users] Moderators notice of new request Problem

2004-10-15 Thread Frederico Figueiredo
Hello,

I am using Mailman 2.1.5 on my host service.

Just added and configurated a new mailing list but I am having a problem
I can't solve.

I want to receive email notifications of new subscribers so that I can know
of what is pending for approval. I have checked with "Yes" the options:

1. Should the list moderators get immediate notice of new requests, as well
as daily notices about collected ones?

2. Should administrator get notices of subscribes and unsubscribes?

3. Send mail to poster when their posting is held for approval?

But still, I am not getting a notification. I only receive notification of
new subscribers and unsubscribers (once I have approved this in the "Tend to
pending moderator requests" dialog).

Can anyone help me with this?

Thank you,
Fred
