For the first two, see the FAQ at

To add to the ban_list of all lists see

[Mailman-Users] How to change configs for ALL lists?

2010-01-11 Thread Bernadette Mooney
was: Re: [Mailman-Users] unsubscribing addresses from domain in one fell swoop?

We had the same thing here - 900 lists, 120,000 subscribers - but while
the 400-odd bulk-unsubs went well, cleaning out the 'pending' 700 or so
authorisation requests was a little more problematic. However, 'tis
done now.

The current question is: How can I change the configuration of ALL lists, to
add a line like
"ban_list = ['^[a-za-z0-9@[nn]astymail\\.org'
or
"header_filter_rules = [('Subject:.*\\*\\*\\*SPAM\\*\\*\\*.*', 3, False)]"
or
add an extra address to the ban_list line?

config_list? with_list? but how?

And no, I'm no programmer, just a little quick'n'dirty shell scripting is as
much as I can handle. :(

Search the web for "email to rss". There you'll find things like

(this is not a recommendation; it's just the first google hit from the
above search).

Short answer: yes.

Longer answer: if the laptop isn't powered on and on the network with a
publicly-routable IP address 24x7, then it's, shall we say, sub-optimal.
You'd be better off talking to the folks at about

As long as it is Mac OS X, it is possible, even with a non-Intel
processor. See the FAQ at .

Also see the installation manual at
 for an idea of what's
involved.

In general you also need a fixed IP address with a domain name and
proper reverse DNS in order to be able to reliably send mail. However,
if you are using this for an outgoing newsletter only, it is possible
to set up and use Mailman without a web server and without incoming
mail and with outgoing mail going through your ISP, although the ISP
may limit how much mail you can send. In this environment, you would
have to interact with Mailman entirely via 'terminal', and it would
probably be just as easy to send your newsletter as an ordinary email
with Bcc: to the recipients.

You don't - you use the services of whoever hosts your list. This
list is about the software (GNU Mailman) that underpins that service.

Contact the administrator of your service (possibly Dreamhost).

My guess is that your list members are sending their posts to
listname-ow...@... instead of to listn...@... (or possibly to
listname-boun...@... if you receive the mail as an unrecognized bounce).
Then you do lot include the list address in your reply either.

As to why your members are not addressing their posts properly, I don't
know. Perhaps the FAQ at may help.

OTOH, it is possible that your list members are moderated and you have
your list set to discard posts from moderated members and also to
forward auto discards to the admin so that posts from moderated members
get forwarded to you only.

[Mailman-Users] WBAR listserv

Hello,

I'm writing on behalf of WBAR Barnard College Radio. We use your service (
lists.wbar.org), but have been having some problems. Our former webmaster
left the group without giving us any information or passwords, but managed
to make me an admin on our listserv prior to this. However, he didn't give
me any passwords and my attempts to contact him has been met with no
response; therefore, can you help me retrieve or reset the password to our
listserv?

Thank you!

[Mailman-Users] Sending mail from 1 member to all members

2010-01-11 Thread Harry Fogarty

I am having an issue of sending mail from one user to all the users of the
mailing list. It seems like the main mail from a user comes to me which is
the admin and then when I reply to that email it only goes back to the
sender. How do I get this to go to all members of the list so that everyone
can be involved in the questions that are being asked by the user.
