[Mailman-Users] Constant Mailman error messages

2022-12-23 Thread PCZero Support
I have a hosting client using MailMan with about 10,000
subscribers. He sends mail only about once or twice a year and it is
an announcement only list, no discussion, he is the only one who
posts. Recently he posted and now I am getting constantly flooded
with the following message.

I have killed the mailman running processes and rebooted the
server. The error message continue. What is causing this error and
how do I stop it?

[Mailman-Users] Malfunction of our mailing list

2016-12-18 Thread support

Hello everyone.
The normal operation of our mailing list was such that when you post a
message, you get yourself a copy of the message. Currently, when you
post a message, you receive no copies. You do not know if the members
got the message.

Can you help me? Please

[Mailman-Users] post to mailman from mailman-owner

2012-02-04 Thread ThirdRock Support
I have an old Mailman installation (2.1.14) using postfix virtual domains.
There was a problem with permissions, and so a lot of messages were shunted.
I fixed permissions, and mailing lists are working, but list moderator
requests are not being sent.
My 'post' logs a are filled with messages saying:

Feb 03 22:39:34 2012 (30455) post to mailman from mailman-ow...@mydomain.com,
size=1694, message-id=,
1 failures

This message repeats every few seconds.
My mailman managed alias file does have what I think are the correct
entries for the mailman list:

# STANZA START: mailman
# CREATED: Thu Jun 23 22:10:23 2011
mailman: "|/mailman/mail/mailman post mailman"
mailman-admin: "|/mailman/mail/mailman admin mailman"
mailman-bounces: "|/mailman/mail/mailman bounces mailman"
mailman-confirm: "|/mailman/mail/mailman confirm mailman"
mailman-join:"|/mailman/mail/mailman join mailman"
mailman-leave: "|/mailman/mail/mailman leave mailman"
mailman-owner: "|/mailman/mail/mailman owner mailman"
mailman-request: "|/mailman/mail/mailman request mailman"
mailman-subscribe: "|/mailman/mail/mailman subscribe mailman"
mailman-unsubscribe: "|/mailman/mail/mailman unsubscribe mailman"
# STANZA END: mailman

Can anyone point me in the correct direction to fix these problems?

Thanks
Paul

[Mailman-Users] Quick question

2009-11-09 Thread Support
I'm trying to add a active email link in the non digest footer but having
trouble doing so. Is this possible?
Basically I manage around 15 lists and want people to be able to opt out of
the list by emailing me directly at
a certain email address. I can get the email address on there but its not
active. I want people to just be able to click
it (my email address) and type remove and hit send.

Thanks,

Joe

Hello John,

this really sounds like you'd need a campaign software software :-)

Have you ever heard of "openEMM" http://www.openemm.org/ ?

May that's what you're looking for.

Hello Emmi,

do you want to remove the list completely or just from the listinfo-page?

The remove the list completely (with all members etc.) you type

rmlist on the console.

I don't know if it is possible to "hide" a list on the listinfo-site -
someone else here might know ;-)

Hello Mark, hello Patrick,

I read the article again and found the solution here:

http://www.python.org/cgi-bin/faqw-mm.py?req=show&file=faq04.029.htp

I had to do a "withlist -l -a -r fix_url" cause obviously after fixing
apache, configuration of mailman was touched (by me?).
Now the lists appear again and I also tweaked it to ssl-support :-)

Thanks for your help! Very good support on this list!!!

Best wishes,
Ivan

[Mailman-Users] Lists not shown on "listinfo"-site

we had some problems with apache2 and mailman - after upgrading the
server the lists are not shown anymore on the listinfo-site

Under /var/lib/mailman/list my lists are still there - i guess the
databaseconfig isn't read properly or could it be missconfiguration in
apache2?

Thanks!

Hello Robert,

when you click in the "member-administration" (I translate from the
german interface, so it may be named different in the english gui), you
can add you members - copy them fist into a text file and pay attention
to add only one e-mail adress per line - that's the way to add a mass of
adresses.
There is also the possibility to add directly from a file - but I think
it won't work with excel, maybe .csv-format or .txt ...

Good luck,
Ivan

Hello Robert,

maybe you have the setting, that you (and maybe also anybody else) does
not recieve a copy of the own message sent to the list - you can check
this in the first option of your membership administration.

[Mailman-Users] Mailman web-frontend on different server than mailserver

2006-06-12 Thread IT-Support @ AStA TU Darmstadt
Hello,

i have a tricky problem:

Our mail- and webserver crashed and after a restore apache isn't running
yet - it will still take some time to fix it on the origin server (so
the web-frontend of mailman isn't working)- so we set up apache on a new
machine.
The problem is, that after the installation of mailman on the new
machine, mailman logicly looks on the localhost for lists etc.

What I want is (if possible) to use the mailman installation on the new
server, but to take the lists and configs from the origin server - if
this isn't possible - I would try to transfer everything to the new
server - but the problem is that I CAN'T TRANSFER the mailserver!!!

Incoming mails are still recieved by the origin server (postfix) an I
don't know how to tell postfix/mailman that mailman now is on a
different server in the LAN an it has to pass over all mailman commands
to the new server...

Any suggestions?

Thanks a lot!

Ivan

[Mailman-Users] Locating Private Members

2005-11-21 Thread Web User Support
I've had an inquiry from a list-administrator about identifyng private
listserv members (who don't show on at /roster). Is there a way to identify
those users other than by going through each alpha-numeric section of the

Thanks in advance for any help with this.

It's set to admin-only and she *is* one of them. I also re-set her admin
password, but without success.

[Mailman-Users] Cannot View Subscribers' List - Mailman 2.1.5

2005-10-18 Thread Web User Support
Hi,

This is my first time posting to this list; I hope someone can help me.

One of our clients is unable to view their subscriber list via the listinfo
page; the result insists on a "valid email address". The client *is* using
a valid address and I have confirmed that she has the correct password. I
have also failed to log in via our master user-name and I have re-set the
password.

Does anyone have any ideas about solving this?

Many thanks,

Geoff

[Mailman-Users] SPAM relayed mail through Mailman.

2005-05-15 Thread Colorado Tech Support
Hi, I'm pretty new to this, but I've got a problem.

Last night, a SPAMer was able to relay 250 mail messages through my
server and I can't figure out how they did it.

Here's my configuration:

Fedora Core 2 - kernel-2.6.10-1.771_FC2
apache - httpd-2.0.51-2.9
mailman-2.1.5-10.fc2
sendmail-8.12.11-4.6

Here's what I know...

My sendmail is configured in a way to only allow relaying from IP
addresses within my network (the 192.168.blah.blah range).
I believe this is configured correctly because I get "RELAYING DENIED"
messages all the time from SPAMers trying to relay through my server.

The only reason I know about the attempt is because I received over 100
bounced messages to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" from the target of the
attack.

The bounced messages all contained the original message (which came from
[EMAIL PROTECTED]).

My /etc/log/maillog file shows all 250 sendmails being relayed (here's
just one):
maillog:May 14 21:02:52 nameofmyserver sendmail[14830]: j4F32px8014830:
from=<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, size=2408, class=0, nrcpts=1,
msgid=<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, bodytype=7BIT,
proto=ESMTP, daemon=MTA, relay=mail.popcap.com [69.25.140.155]

My mailman settings don't allow anyone from any groups to send
mass-mailings without approval. (I verified this all this morning.)

So, I guess I have two questions:
1) How did they do it?
(and more importantly) 2) How do I stop it?

Thank you all for your time!

Jon

2005-04-06 Thread Obantec Support
Hi Denis

think its fixed now. i did install FC3 rpm's via yum but when i checked cron
i could see no entries so as on RH8 i ran the crontab code Big mistake!
anyway stopped mailman (/etc/rc.d/initd/mailman) removed the cron entries,
started up mailman (it put new entries in cron and it all looks cool.)

Illegal command: /usr/lib/mailman/cron/disabled

i put a link in /bin/mailman to /usr/lib/mailman/mail/mailman

and from bash with mailman i get Usage: mailman program [args...] so it
seems to find mailman ok.

but

Cheers,
I've eventually tracked it down to a sophos installation script. sophos,
was being installed in the wrong place and that was affecting the file
ownerships

No longer are they being owned by mailman, but by root. I can fix the
problem by resetting the ownership of the files to mailman and
re-running check_perms -f to fix any stray permissions, but its
frustrating for the list users who have to wait for this to be done.

There's nothing within Mailman that would cause this kind of
behaviour.

I've checked the cron scripts on the machine and can't see anything
that
would affect the files in that part of the file system.

I don't know anything about your OS. I'd recommend you use the
mailing lists, newsgroups, FAQs, etc... that are appropriate to what
you're running.

I can tell you that the problem may be a logfile rotation script,
or some other sort of cron job, or maybe it's being run indirectly --
some other cron job runs some other command which results in the kind
of behaviour you're seeing.

Has anyone else seen this problem and do they know the cause of it?

You could search the archives of the mailman-users mailing list,
such as described at
<http://www.python.org/cgi-bin/faqw-mm.py?req=show&file=faq01.018.htp>.
I've heard of these kinds of problems before, but I don't know if
they occurred on the same platform that you're running.

[Mailman-Users] mailman complaining about script permissions after running normally for a period...

2005-03-04 Thread it support
Hi,
I've had mailman running quite happily for a period of time on a redhat
9 machine and made sure that when I set it up that the groups were all
correct and for a few weeks messages were going out to the list. Then,
periodically (every few weeks) I get the following message in the logs
and mail is not delivered.

Mar 4 10:46:42 david postfix/local[31297]: 01DE533DC8:
to=<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, orig_to=<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, relay=local, delay=27,
status=bounced (Command died with status 2:
"/usr/local/mailman/mail/mailman post noticesp". Command output: Group
mismatch error. Mailman expected the mail wrapper script to be executed
as group "mailman", but the system's mail server executed the mail
script as group "nobody". Try tweaking the mail server to run the
script as group "mailman", or re-run configure, providing the command
line option `--with-mail-gid=nobody'. )

I've tracked down the problem to the ownership of the files are
changing. No longer are they being owned by mailman, but by root. I can
fix the problem by resetting the ownership of the files to mailman and
re-running check_perms -f to fix any stray permissions, but its

[Mailman-Users] mailman processing queued messages - not working

2004-12-21 Thread NetC Network Support
Hi,
Our mailman installation is not processing queued mail. Postifx
delivers it (relay=mailman) and it ends up in the qfiles directory.
After that, nothing happens to it.

System info:

N.B. Lock files get created (qrunner.lock) with a timestamp of 21st

Dec 21 12:05:02 2004 (20191) Could not acquire qrunner lock
Steps I have tried: (all unsuccessful)
- sending test messages
these hit postfix which delivers them to the mailman q
the web interface does not show any pending administrator requests
these lists all require approval
- restarting the qrunner process
- running qrunner by hand - no error output
- removing the lock files
- restarting cron
- removing all qfile directory contents and sending test messages
I must be doing something wrong. Everything was working until 5:05pm
Friday (now 12:15pm Tuesday AEST). Nobody changed anything that I know
of.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

*bounce_score_threshold 2.0

**bounce_you_are_disabled_warnings 1
**bounce_you_are_disabled_warnings_interval 3*

[Mailman-Users] terse phrase update fails MM2.1.5

2004-07-25 Thread Obantec Support
Hi

I set the original terse phrase via the admin web page but decide it was a
bit bloated, was in the form

Server News (Server News for users on ServerX)

i changed it to

Server News

Applied changes and post to list. to my surprise i still get To: Server News
(Server News for users on ServerX)

I tried to set it to blank but no joy. Still sends original value.

is this a bug in 2.1.5 in the terse phrase.

Hi Mark

I think it is how some mailing lists are not 100% used the way i understand
them to be used.
You hit reply all and yes OE sets up my address;list address (not CC) but
this means i get 2 emails!

if you hit reply and substitute my address for list address then i would
only get 1 email (my subscribed email).
Some users send with the From: set to the list name to avoid this. ( i see
quite a few double emails).

I still believe that the first email to a list should when it arrives at the
users inbox only show From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] and To:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

not From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] and CC:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

take my original post to this list the headers are

From: "Obantec Support" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

No Cc: header added by mailman

Yes i had DNS not setup quite right. a rough CNAME for the list which made
mailman web pages work but resulted in dropping the lists part of domain
when passing thru mail server.
Added A record for web and MX for mail and its all ok.

Ok what i mean here is when I post to the list i only want list members to
see To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
what they are seeing is To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] CC:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
what i want is like this list where when you post all you see is To:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

[Mailman-Users] how to stop lists.domain.com becoming domain.com

2004-07-23 Thread Obantec Support
Hi

I am just in the process of adding mailman-2.1.5

Now i created a list and change mm_cfg.py so that

DEFAULT_EMAIL_HOST = 'lists.domain.com'
DEFAULT_URL_HOST = 'lists.domain.com'
VIRTUAL_HOSTS.clear()
add_virtualhost(DEFAULT_URL_HOST, DEFAULT_EMAIL_HOST)

added aliases and i can access the admin via www
host name this list prefers is lists.domain.com

and i subscribed myself and another email address ok.

Now when i post the email From: loses the lists so [EMAIL PROTECTED]
becomes [EMAIL PROTECTED] but footer keeps full url.

1. how do i fix From: changing?
2. how do i prevent To: showing sender and CC: showing list (minus the
"lists" part of domain?

[Mailman-Users] configuring mailman NOT TO handle bounces??

2004-07-19 Thread Fran - HIS Support
Hi guys,
I have a list owner I just migrated from Majordomo, who'd like
go get the bounces to his email address instead of letting Malman handle
the bounces.

I checked, I could not find any obvious solutions in the list bounce
handling.
Even redirecting the list-bounce mail alias would not do it I suppose.

Is there a way to configure Mailman do do that?
Thanks for any help.

[Mailman-Users] virtualhost 99% working but!

2003-09-11 Thread Obantec Support
Hi

mailman 2.1.2
figured out how to globally add mailman script alias so each domain can get
to lists.domainX.com/mailman/ but pipermail always seems to use
default_url_host as the lists.domain.com to access pipermail. So the link
List_Archives is always lists.domain.com/pipermail/listname not
lists.domain1.com/pipermail/listname

i have 5 domains setup and all the web access pages for admin lists etc seem
fine.

Re: [Mailman-Users] Footer message in html email

HTML in email sucks. If I want to see a damn web page I'll go to
the URL. Most people use HTML to dress up spam or otherwise hide the fact
that they had nothing worthwhile to say anyway. I filter ALL HTML out of
any mail I get. Its extremely unprofessional to use.

Re: [Mailman-Users] Upgraded then ... "Too many recipients tothe message."

2003-07-14 Thread Customer & Technical Support
That parameter is described and coded poorly. It is extremely
misleading. The number that one SHOULD have to put in there is the max
number of address allowed. However the number you need to enter is one
number MORE THAN that number. Max addresses should be max addresses! It
is very easy to set this wrong. The instructions and the description don't
logically follow with the code. During the next update of MM this should
be fixed. Either the name of the parameter should be changed or the code
behind it. That way it will be what it says it is. Many of our clients
had this issue.

[Mailman-Users] 2.1.2 Questions

2003-07-13 Thread Customer & Technical Support
I am using 2.1.2 after coming from 2.0.13. I like a lot the new options
that were set 'features' in the older version. However the programmers
added a LOT more of the same old type of 'features' in the 2.1.2 version
and have not allowed for optioning them out. I'll try to describe as best
I can what I want to do.
Basically I want to run a list with none of the stock MM web pages. One
of the biggest things I don't like is that almost every page gives a link
to places that users have no place being. Case in point is the newly added
confirmation page and the following admin approval page if your lest is set
to confirm and approve. Each of these pages lists the link to the admin
control panel page. That is a major security flaw IMHO. Why even list
that in the general population of your site. I don't want all kinds of
users and guests to my site to know the links to my admin pages. Doesn't
that make sense? I THINK in 2.0.13 the confirm was a simply email that the
pending new user replied to and they did not go to a series of web
pages. I may be wrong but I don't recall this at all. Anyway it would be
good to have it so all of these pages can be modified.
The best case scene for me is to have a mailto link on one of my web site
pages where potential subscribers can click to start the process of signing
up for the list. I know how to do that and I know the syntax to use. The
list would be confirm and approve. The user would get an email with a
simple line that say something about replying to confirm and possibly an
address to report if he thinks he is being subscribed in bad faith. No
long list of MM links to my site since I do not want to use them. Once the
new user responds they will get an email (again with no list of links) that
tells him his subscription is pending approval. The admin gets notified
and goes to approve. No web interface at all and no mention of it. Can
someone help me with this. Any patches of edits to the code to make this
happen would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
DB

Re: [Mailman-Users] Digest Question...

2003-07-12 Thread Customer & Technical Support
Brad,
I understand that these are my options and I appreciate your
feedback. What I need though is help with the second of these options. I
would like to edit the ToDigest.py file so that is simply does not add the
text and link in question. I think that would be the cleanest fix, however
my python knowledge is very VERY limited and I cannot see where this is
done so I don't know what to comment out (if it is that simple). Any
additional feedback from list members is invited.

Thanks,

You can modify your input filters so that you reject all messages
that are not in plain text format (or whatever), or you might be able
to configure it so that mailman will drop any attachment portion and
allow just the plain text part through.

[Mailman-Users] Digest Question...

2003-07-11 Thread Customer & Technical Support
Hello all...
I finally got lucky enough to get MM 2.1.2 installed on my server. I like
it a LOT better than the 2.0.13 version. It has all of the features I
wanted added in. However it does one thing I don't like at all... In the
digest version of the list I get a link after a lot of messages similar to
this one.

An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
URL:
http://www.mydomain.com/mailman/private/listname/attachments/20030710/492d2165/attachment.htm

I searched the archive and saw one thread about this. The 'fix' was to
turn of the plain (vs MIME) for digest. That (IMHO) is not a fix but a
work around. I want to keep plain format and not add the two lines listed
above. basically I want to just delete/trash/nuke any MIME on the posts to
the list. Can someone please advise what I need to edit (in ToDigest.py
if I am not mistaken) to get rid of this?

Thanks,
DB

Re: [Mailman-Users] Version 2.1.2 on Redhat Linux 7.3

2003-06-01 Thread Tentra List Support
It is possible - I have it running on two different RedHat 7.3 servers.
You cannot, however, use the RedHat rpm for Mailman 2.1.2 from RedHat 8
or 9 and you will have to build Mailman from source (mailman.tar.gz) .
The version of python you have (python2-2.2.2-11) is probably current
enough and Mailman has to be configured with that version and not the
python-1.5.2-43 version. The thing to do would be to download
mailman.tar.gz from www.list.org and extract it and read the INSTALL
file. Hope this helps.

Re: [Mailman-Users] Installing Mailman

2003-05-27 Thread Tentra List Support
I am afraid I'd have to agree with Dirk. I think most of the subscribers on
this list REALLY like to help others - I know I do. But this is not a Linux
tutorial mailing list and a basic knowledge of Unix is necessary. This IS a
situation where you should either hire someone or get your hands on a Linux
test box and have LOTS of time on your hands to experiment.

[Mailman-Users] Mailman 2.1 w/ RH 7,2 virtual hosts

2003-03-31 Thread support
I have searched the archives and docs... But I am really stuck on chuck.

Is there a pretty concise how to for installing Mailman on a Redhat 7.2
box using named based virtual hosts in a chroot environment with
safemode on?

What I want to do is install mailman (rpm or ./configure) on the server
(I have root access) allow all of the domains on the box to use it as
their own. (kind of how squirrelmail does for accessing domain mail).

Does any one have a step by step proceedure for accompishing this task.
I have tried a number of things for other os's etc. but nothing seems to
work.

If anyone has this config working let me know!!!

Then I also have an ensim box I need to do the same things to. But I can
probably figure that out if the first one works.

[Mailman-Users] list.org down ??

2003-03-14 Thread EnviroLink Support
Hi -

I've been subscribed to this list for a few weeks, with the idea that I
might switch from Listproc to Mailman in the near future. I've noticed,
like others on this list, that the list.org website has been inaccessible
for the past three days (at least). Nslookups from several different
servers yield a "*** Can't find list.org: No answer" message. I can
access all other websites that I've tried for several days.

Does anyone know why list.org is down? This certainly makes me hesitate
before making a decision about using Mailman.

Thanks-
Marla

Re: [Mailman-Users] A Known bug with confirmation string & excessive bounces

2003-02-18 Thread VLists.Net Support
Altho I haven't seen the problem on any of the lists I run on my own
server, I have experienced this exact problem on both mailman-users and
mailman-developers lists here.

What gets me about this is that altho it says I'm generating excessive
bounces, I get the bounce notification just fine. But when I hit the URL,
it gives me an invalid confirmation string. Also, I appear to be receiving
email from both lists just fine until I get these notices.

I might suggest that a change be made to the code that when these excessive
bounce notices are sent, that the most recent bounce message be included
with the notice. There is no reason for my mail to bounce. I've NEVER had
mail bounce before. I suspect that the bouncing mail is probably really
an address above or below mine in the database and that the excessive
bounce process is off by one in the subscriber list when it decides to cut
someone off, and as a result I get cut off instead of the address next to
me which is the one that's really bouncing. Having the most recent bounce
included in the notification would allow me, as a user, to take steps to
prevent the bounces in the future, and prove whether it really was me or
not that was bouncing. Otherwise this is a fairly unfriendly action being
taken by mailman, imho.

Someone asked about the content of the qrunner log and another some other

The archives are a bit behind. The last seven messages to the list have

[Mailman-Users] master-qrunner.pid

2003-02-02 Thread VLists.Net Support
We've had several instances lately where Mailman 2.1 just dies silently and
no more mail goes out. I've resorted to putting a cron job in that
restarts mailmanctl but when that happens I get the following returned...

Shutting down Mailman's master qrunner
PID unreadable in: /usr/home/circle/usr/local/mailman/data/master-qrunner.pid
[Errno 2] No such file or directory:
'/usr/home/circle/usr/local/mailman/data/master-qrunner.pid'
Is qrunner even running?

Sure enough, the pid file is missing, and the restart has no effect. I
have to actually stop mailmanctl and then start it. Not a restart, but a
stop/start process. Then everything in the qfiles/in gets processed and it
goes on its way again for a few hours until it dies.

I'm running Python 2.1.3 and Mailman 2.1 Final on FreeBSD 4.4

Any ideas?

[Mailman-Users] Re: senddigests -> LookupError: unknown encoding

2003-01-24 Thread VLists.Net Support
After playing with this a bit, I've found that it's specificly because of
the Windows-1252 charset not being recognized. The linefeed/tab in the
header didn't make any difference as it choked on another message that
didn't have the linefeed/tab, but was also Windows-1252 charset.

Now... a new problem has cropped up. One of my list members posts to the
list using the TWIG webmail program and that program does not add
Content-Type: header at all. Therefore when her mail message, which is
actually US-ASCII plain text, is digested, it comes out with...

non-text attachment stripped

and no message body at all. That's kinda wrong because 1) it was text, and
2) it wasn't an attachment.

Both of these are bugs that need to be addressed pretty quickly, if possible.

I would not have made a virtualhost for mailman.

Lets assume you have want mailman for all hosts then keep virtualhosts as
before and simple add required additions

so in your case (assuming www convention)

VirtualHost www.mydomain1.tld>
ServerName www.mydomain1.tld
ServerAlias mydomain1.tld

just for completeness but not necessary howerver i prefer to add it. (you

missing ServerAlias but DNS ok as it finds your server. (you can add an A or
CNAME for mailman subdomain if you are still going to use it.

Work on that later get interface up first (IMHO) post a new question once
web up.

Partly the missing ServerAlias but www.mydomain1.tld/mailman/listinfo/
should work since mailman is script alias for the cgi-bin under mailman dir
and listinfo is the script it runs.

in my opinion the URL http://mailman.mydomain1.tld/mailman/listinfo/ would
be over long and ugly.
but would work with mods i suggested.

Ok, I think that worked.

I noticed that adding the cron job was IMPERATIVE but I never thought
that it would hinder subscriptions. It says YOU'LL BE SORRY IF YOU DON'T
which I took as not completely necessary.

DEVELOPERS: Why don't you just add the cron jobs as a NECESSARY part of
the installation. I've noticed that a few other people may have had
similar problems. Or in FAQ add "Syslog says subscription email sent
but, I'm not added to the list, why?" Answer "Install the cron job"

thanx for you help.

Hi,

Im running mailman-2.0.13, RH 7.2, Sendmail, apache1.3.26, UW-IMAP,
python-1.5.2

I created a test list and tried subscribing via the web interface. I get
an email requesting that I reply as confirmation. I reply but don't get
a confirmation email back and my email is not listed as a member. I
look at the mailman logs and just see 'pending' for my email. I look at
the /var/log/maillog and I see this

So, using html email this problem is overcome by hiding the
overly long url in the source code; but, then, there are those
who complain about html email, or, use inferior mail readers
that don't have a clue how to read html.

This url is too long: click

Hi,I am using Mailman 2.0.6-1 and
Sendmail-8.11.6-3.  My users are complainingabout the line wrap
problem when send mailing mail to the mail list with along URL.  It
seems line wraps text lines that are longer than 80 characterswith no
white-space.  If you include a long URL in a email message itusually
gets split onto separate lines and the typical email reader withinBCA
(exchange) marks the first part of the link as clickable when usually
itisn't.  People have to paste the whole link back together manually
in a webbrowser input dialog to get it to work.First, I thought it
maybe a Sendmail problem. So I tried send a mail viaSendmail with a long
URL and it appears to be fine.  The long URL did splitinto two lines,
and the second line is still highlighted as a href link, sothere was no
problem.  By clicking the link, the browser would bring up thecorrect
information.  However, sending an email to the mail list is a
  different problem.  For example,http://labtest.ca.boeing.com/~psim/NewRtPlatform/test_plate_form_notes.07_18_02.html
will show up with 2 lines and the second line would be ml andwouldn't be
highlighted as part of the URL that is clickable.Any
clue? Thanks for any help.  We had this problem for about a
year.  I finally got achance to look into it now.  Mary

Substitute the server name where list is run for: YOUR_DOMAIN
Substitute the member's password for: YOUR_PASSWORD
be sure to leave a "space" after unsubscribe in the body of message.

Re: [Mailman-Users] Can I pay for Technical support? re: MailMan?

2002-08-13 Thread Support Desk

No insinuation was made, that GPL "prevents" paid support.

There are hundreds, probably thousands of companies world
wide, whether on the NYSE, or small business operators,
who host sites & already have Mailman installed. Anyone
who thinks they can "host" from their basement, using DSL
or Cable, is sadly misinformed, when for a couple dollars
a week, they can obtain 100Mb or more, and run Mailman
and a dozen other software packages, host their site, email,
etc, and receive "support" from the hosting provider.

Compared to "paid" support from the big guys, which can be
$25 or more "per incident" it's more reasonable than attempting
a do it yourself project using a slow, unreliable connection. Anyone
willing to pay for support, should get their full money's worth, and
receive a reliable connection, bandwidth, space, software, etc.

Re: [Mailman-Users] Can I pay for Technical support? re: MailMan?

2002-08-13 Thread Support Desk

Ha, ha.. This is open source, not microsloth, there is
no "paid" support option..

Personally, I find DSL and Cable lines too unreliable.
The only "paid" support you can get for Mailman is by
hosting your site on one of the thousands of real
full time hosting providers who offer Mailman as part
of their hosting packages. Many offer accounts for
only a few dollars per month, with 99% + uptime.

"Access" providers, who "give" you free space with
your account, do not guarantee uptime, their "hosted"
sites are generally slow, because 98% of their bandwidth
is dedicated to "access" not "hosting" .

A search for "host mailman" on Google will give you
hundreds of hits of hosts that have Mailman installed.

[Mailman-Users] Failure to exec script. WANTED gid 0, GOT gid 12. (Reconfigure totake 12?)

2002-08-12 Thread Support

Hi,

I set up mailman 2.0.12 on RH7.3 running sendmail.(sendmail running as
root, apache as nobody, mailman running as mailman)

i created a list, allowed FollowSymLinks in pipermail alias in apache,
added the appropriate aliases in the /etc/aliases file, and added a
symlink /etc/smrsh/wrapper -> /home/mailman/mail/wrapper

When i try to subscribe a test user to the list I get a subscribe
notice, I reply, then I get an email with this error.

I looked this up in the mailman archive and they say that it's a postfix
problem where postfix executes the wrapper as the owner of the aliase
file(root)and the remedy is to change the owner to mailman but,

1- im not running postfix
2- is changing the owner of /etc/aliases to mailman a good idea?

is there another way of solving this

RE: [Mailman-Users] Mailman don't send subscription confirmation email

2002-07-23 Thread Support

Ive been having trouble with that also, among other things.

when you create a list via $prefix/bin/newlist

it runs you thru a little questionaire. what is the list's name, who is the
admin?

it then tells you to add this the your /etc/aliases file.

###-- Mailman List Aliases

## test mailing list
## Created: 18-Jul-2002 mailman
test: "|/home/mailman/mail/wrapper post test"
test-admin: "|/home/mailman/mail/wrapper mailowner test"
test-request: "|/home/mailman/mail/wrapper mailcmd test"
test-owner: test-admin

make sure you have this, and you have a symlink in
/etc/smrsh/wrapper -> $prefix/mail/wrapper (this hint is in the docs
somewhere)
you can add the wrapper with this command

shell> ln -s $prefix/mail/wrapper wrapper

---My problem is I get the confirmation message. I reply to it but don't get
added to the list

anyone know why.

thanx

Hi...

I been install Mailman 2.0.11-1 downloaded from RedHat
rpm's database, on a RedHat 7.1 server with sendmail
and iPop3 (Imap), I made test sending and reciving
mails trought shell's users and it works, but when I
tried to subscribe to Mailman list, the server doesn't
send me any mail for confirmation.

I tried make it work, changing the aliases but even it
doesn't work.

I have my /etc/aliases like this.

mailman: postmaster
mailman-owner: mailman

Is this right? or I need to make some changes...

Re: [Mailman-Users] Re: Double Opt-In?

2002-07-15 Thread Support Desk

Well, Will, here's said article you were so "unable" to
"connect to" http://www.spamfaq.net/spam-evils.shtml#opt_in
which, for anyone with lots of time on their hands, who have
nothing better to do than read lengthy diatribes by radical
anti-spammers, it's one in a long list of timewasters, but,
for a concise, to the point, understandable, definition which,
probably fits the scenario Michael was asking about see:
http://www.ibizbasics.com/online030601.htm

Anyone going to a list sign-up form, and submitting:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] would yield **you** being
"opted-in" (subscribed) whether **you** wanted to or
not, or whether it was actually **you** who submitted
form. But, with "double opt-in" you would **only** be subscribed
**IF** you replied to a confirmation, hence, the term
"double opt-in" or as you prefer "confirmed opt-in".

However, if a robot snakes it's way through the web,
and harvests your email address and then adds it to a
list or lists, without asking, then, you have neither "opted-in"
nor "confirmed" since you were gratiously, and possibly,
maliciously added by the robot with no verification process.

Therefore, your optin, er, I mean opinion; that ALL opt-in
that is "actually" opt-in is "confirmed," is not logical.

Re: [Mailman-Users] Subscribe/Un-Subscribe via e-mail, not web

2002-07-09 Thread Support Desk

Actually, a form like that could be dangerous; unscrupulous
bum could subscribe enemy to multiple lists at once, and
although the actual subscriptions would not activate, due
to Mailman's required confirmation process, it could easily
harass the receiver, and the list manager, for lists that
require manager approval, or that send the manager
notice of new subs/unsubs. That said, here are some links:

Build a custom script for managing subscribers:
http://subscriber.newfieldcash.com/ this is especially useful
for lists that are on mutiple servers, running multiple
listserve clients
and is not specific to Mailman.

Or, if you'd rather not spend $35 here's examples you
could probably hack to suit your request, if you have more time

Subject: [Mailman-Users] Questions regarding Listserv service

I am on the market for a new listserv service and I had a few questions I
could not find answers to in the website:

Is Mailman accessible from email?
What do you mean "accessible"?
Mailman is a mailing list software which when properly installed on your
server,
delivers messages to subscribers VIA email.

Do you mean, can subscribers send commands to the robot via email?
YES...
mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subect=help

Do you mean, can the administrator manage the list via email?
NO, administration is via the web interface: or ssh
http://mail.python.org/mailman/admin/mailman-users

How does a user unsubscribe from email?
Access your list web page:
http://mail.python.org/mailman/options/mailman-users/cprg--at--cprg.net
or by sending email from the account you wish to unsubscribe
mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subect=unsubscribe

Can the administrator bulk upload email addresses to the list?
YES, via the web interface.

Can a user reply both publicly and privately?
YES, list administrator has the option of setting where replies go to,
if "to sender" replyer needs to "Reply to All" to send public reply,
if
"to list" replyer needs to paste the address of "sender" in the "To:"
box in place of the "List Address" of the reply.

Is there digest and index capability?
YES (Pipermail)

Are there ads on Mailman? If so, are we paid for these ads?
NO ads are included, but list owner may put own ads in the list
header,
footer, or listinfo page, and elsewhere.
Thanks for your help,

[Mailman-Users] Mailman, Virtual Hosts and SUEXEC

2002-06-26 Thread Support Desk

I've heard from numerous resellers, who are unhappy that there
is an incompatibilty when Mailman runs in a virtual
hosting environment under SUEXEC.. Every reseller, every
customer of reseller, every domain on a machine has the
admin url of the server root domain. This is exposing the
customers of the resellers to the source of the hosting,
and is causing an uproar.. The server owners run suexec
for security, so, it's either expose the machine to hackers
by running mailman and others as root, or expose the
identity of the server owner to the customers of the resellers,
and there HAS to be a way to make mailman
run under suexec and still allow the url admin be the virtual
host, like it is without suexec!
Please, is there any solution to this?

NO! the question is how do you edit the MAIN listserv page where the lists are
populated not the main page of a specific list.

for example
http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo

THAT PAGE

not

http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/c++-sig

i think we all know how to edit a page like that.

http://YOUR_DOMAIN/mailman/istinfo.html
IS a list specific page (DUH!)

It IS the "main" page! (DUH!)

It is called the "General list information page" ... (DUH!)

It is FULLY customizable! You don't like the pretty blue
and beige color scheme? Change it! You don't like the
Python Goat? Delete it! (DUH!)

You customize it for your own list through admin at:
http://YOUR_DOMAIN/mailman/edithtml/YOUR_LIST
http://YOUR_DOMAIN/mailman/edithtml/YOUR_LIST/listinfo.html
You type in or copy & paste your code in the box, and save it;
this changes the look of the page, if you want the page
to follow the look and feel of your site, if you want to add
a background, other links, buttons, scripts, add banners,
change colors, add a pic of your girl friend, or whatever!
you do that here!
Note that any tag is a Mailman tag, and you
may or may not wish to leave specific tags there. Just use
caution, maintain chronological backups of your changes
in case you screw anything up..

Do I need to give you a guided tour?
Now go to your list admin
and L@@K on the right side, you see:
"Other Administrative Activities" under there is a link:
"Edit the HTML for the public list pages " Click it! Then click this link:
"General list information page " Now, edit anything your little
heart desires! Then click [ Submit Changes ]

Do you understand what I'm sayin'?

Now, I need a drink... No charge for the guided tour.. ;-)

Re: [Mailman-Users] Customization of "main" Mailman pages

2002-06-26 Thread Support Desk

http://YOUR_DOMAIN/mailman/istinfo.html
IS a list specific page (DUH!)

It IS the "main" page! (DUH!)

It is called the "General list information page" ... (DUH!)

It is FULLY customizable! You don't like the pretty blue
and beige color scheme? Change it! You don't like the
Python Goat? Delete it! (DUH!)

You customize it for your own list through admin at:
http://YOUR_DOMAIN/mailman/edithtml/YOUR_LIST
http://YOUR_DOMAIN/mailman/edithtml/YOUR_LIST/listinfo.html
You type in or copy & paste your code in the box, and save it;
this changes the look of the page, if you want the page
to follow the look and feel of your site, if you want to add
a background, other links, buttons, scripts, add banners,
change colors, add a pic of your girl friend, or whatever!
you do that here!

No charge for the guided tour.. ;-)

Re: [Mailman-Users] Digest mode bug in 2.1b2

2002-06-25 Thread Support Desk

Many admin settings and details are here:
http://www.imsa.edu/~ckolar/mailman/mailman-administration-v2.html

For your specific question, this is not a bug, Mailman is not just
another out of the box, ready to go, software; there are many ways
to customize it, but you have failed complete your customization.

Edit your list information pages to remove those links you do not
want YOUR subscribers to use:
http://YOUR_SERVER/mailman/edithtml/YOUR_LIST
which is accessable through your admin panel, contains "options"
http://YOUR_SERVER/mailman/edithtml/YOUR_LIST/options.html
remove or the digest button and mime/plaintext
options rows, and any other options you have disabled.

You may wish to include a notice on list info page, and in footer or
header informing subscribers that NO digest is available, although,
some would question whether this is wise, it IS your list, to run the
way you see fit.

Although a few of your subscribers may send a help command to
the robot, and receive the command list, if you include the notice,
and they send a digest command anyway, then it's their fault for
not reading your new custonized documentation.

 <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=help>

substitute the name of domain where your list

I.E.: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subect=help>
will invoke an autoresponse from the mailman-users list.

It's a good idea to include some links in your monthly

[Mailman-Users] How to speed up Mailman?

2002-06-18 Thread Support

Hi,

I'm sending my large newsletter with more than 10 recipents at the
moment.

The traffic my machine produces is very low, so I think Mailman is sending
the mails very slow. So the first question is, how can i measure how fast it
is? Or how many mails are already sent.

I'm using sendmail on a Debian system. When i try hoststat i get a very
large list ...

I would be very happy about your help.

Thanks,

[Mailman-Users] Problem running Mailman on my Debian webserver

2002-05-28 Thread Support

Hello,

i installed Mailman on my webserver with apt-get install mailman

Everything works fine, i'm able to create new lists and so on.

My problem is that i'm not able to get access zu the directory over the web.
For example i create a list "testlist", then i get a mail with links to
listinfo and to the webconfiguration, but when i try to visit this links i
get a 404 from my server.

When i use lynx directly on my server when i'm logged in over ssh,
everything is ok ...

in short:
this works: http://localhost/cgi-bin/mailman/admin/testlist
but not this: http://mydomain.tld/cgi-bin/mailman/admin/testlist

firstly the link in the mail was also with localhost but then i changed
mm_cfg.py

What did i forget or what is wrong?

It would be very nice if someone could help me.

Thanks,
Florian Kubis

Hi

When i run newlist it does not prompt for which virtual_domain the list is
for.
I am using VIRTUAL_HOST_OVERVIEW=1 but it creates the lists under
DEFAULT_HOST_NAME with
DEFAULT_URL

Looks like another hack needed to make it useable under virtual domains.

[Mailman-Users] mailman loops because of & in an address

2002-04-23 Thread Antenna Support

Dear people,

We just experienced a loop: a message was sent many times because it
wasn't deleted in the /home/mailman/qfiles directory
The error mailed was:

/usr/bin/python -S /home/mailman/cron/qrunner

sh: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: command not found
c... User unknown

It appeared that there was an address added to the list:
m&[EMAIL PROTECTED]

The loop could only be stopped by removing the .msg and .db file in the
qfiles directory. I also removed this address from the subscribers.

Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening again?

We run mailman 2.0.6 on Redhat Linux and it seems on first sight an error
in the combination python/mailman.

Thanks for bothering,
