[Mailman-Users] Please help, big problem with members being automatically unsubscribed

2014-01-08 Thread Ricardo Kleemann
Hi,

I'm trying to figure out what is happening that my lists are having
significant numbers of users unsubscribed automatically, even though I
turned off bounce processing.

It seems that the members being removed indeed have a number of bounces,
but if I turned off bounce processing how could this be happening?

Thanks for any suggestions

Turning off bounce processing will prevent new bounces from being
processed and disabling delivery, but members whose delivery is already
disabled by bounce will still be sent their warnings and ultimately be
unsubscribed by cron/disabled.

See the script at http://www.msapiro.net/scripts/reset_bounce.py for a
way to reenable delivery for all disabled by bounce members.

I suspect you got a lot of bounces. Then mailman automatically
unsubscribed your members because of this.

You have to check your mailman logs and SMTP server logs, why you got
bounces from all addresses in your lists.

The setting in Defaults.py and mm_cfg.py is according to manual.
Every time people reply to they need to manually change the reply to

It is not clear to me what the issue is. If it is a mailman issue, it
is possible that the list is set (on General Options) to reply to a
fixed address, and the address in incorrect. If so, change it. It is
also possible that the list's host_name attribute (near the bottom of
General Options) is wrong. If so, change that and also see the FAQ at
http://wiki.list.org/x/mIA9.

If neither of the above fixes the problem, then some MTA is probably
rewriting the domain of the To: header in the post. This could be
either a DNS or MTA configuration issue.

Just in case anyone doesn't realize it, it is not necessary to provide

include in the input only the things you wish to change.

Similarly, there are some email clients that change the From to say

Search through the FAQ Wizard, the documentation, and the archives of
the list for personalization. In particular, what you're looking
for is Full Personalization.

Similarly, there are some email clients that change the From to

That's a Microsoft problem. We can't fix that. See FAQ 2.3.

Search through the FAQ Wizard, the documentation, and the archives of
the list for personalization. In particular, what you're looking
 for is Full Personalization.

Look in the $prefix/data directory at a file named sitelist.cfg
This documents the personalization option.

The best way I've found to set this is as follows:

In the $prefix directory:

This creates a file that contains [almost] all current configuration.
bin/config_list -o data/YourListName.cfg YourListName

Then edit data/YourListName.cfg and on the end, add:

# Personalization option. See sitelist.cfg for documentation.
# legal values are:
#0 = No
#1 = Yes
#2 = Full Personalization
personalize = 2

Then install your modified option file:
bin/config_list -i data/YourListName.cfg YourListName

This should result in the To: header having the recipient's address
instead of the list's address.

Why? There are many different reasons why you might want this, and the
best solution for your situation will depend on the why.

The Reply-To field points to the posting address of the list, which I would
like to change.

There is no option or list setting to change this. The Reply-To: for
digests is set to the list address in Mailman/Handlers/ToDigest.py. If
you want to change it, you have to change the code.

You can also:
A) Make your list a moderated-post list so that replies to the digest
don't get sent out to the rest of the list.
B) Use Privacy Options - Spam filters to reject replies that quote
your list's digest subject (e.g. listname digest).
C) You can set an explicit reply-to which applies to all sent messages
not just the digests, see the General Options section on the admin page:

[Mailman-Users] Please help

2004-10-05 Thread Layne Meier
I am very new to Mailman - we've been a long-time user of Majordomo. I
like the idea of being able to manage lists with a web interface,
rather than something such as Webmin.

I installed Postfix, Apache and Mailman on a test system (Sun Sparc,
Solaris 8). I got all to compile and install properly.

However, and I have to apologize because I know you all have probably
discussed this a million times over by now, but I can't get Apache to
work and recognize the cgi-bin directory.

Here's a cut and paste from my httpd.conf file...
ServerName...
ScriptAlias /mailman/ /usr/local/mailman/cgi-bin
Alias /pipermail/ /usr/local/mailman/archives/public/
Logs and ht directory...
Directory /usr/local/mailman/cgi-bin/
  AllowOverride None
  Options None
  Order allow,deny
  Allow from all
/Directory
Directory /usr/local/mailman/archives/public/
  Options Indexes Includes FollowSymLinks
  AllowOverride none
  Order allow,deny
  Allow from all
/Directory
When I try to access my site via http using a URL similar to this:
http://www.mysite.tld/mailman/create

I get a 404 File Not Found error
Not Found
The requested URL /mailman/create was not found on this server
Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated.

From the INSTALL document:

8. Common Problems

Problem: All Mailman web pages give a 404 File not found error.

Solution: Your web server has not been set up properly for handling
Mailman's cgi commands. Make sure you've:

  1) Configured the web server to give permissions to
 $prefix/cgi-bin
  2) Restarted the web server properly.

Consult your web server's documentation for instructions
on how to do these things.

Yes. I've stopped and started Apache - several times in fact. I read
through the INSTALL, README and README.POSTFIX file several times
before I even began the installation process, and followed the INSTALL
file along during the install.

I think I may be on the right track. A smart person (not me) would
have looked at the Apache error log to see what was wrong. Apparently
I didn't have my syntax exactly correct in my httpd.conf. That was
part one. After I fixed the syntax, stopped and restarted Apache, I
tried to access the CGI-Script again and this time it came back and
gave me an error on my webpage that the script was executed as group
daemon rather than group nobody. In the process of fixing this.

Mailman gives you to option of converting HTML-formatted messages
to ASCII text, and it gives you the ability to either strip specific
attachment types you don't want or to only allow certain specific
certain attachment types through.

Go to the Content Filtering page for your list. If you have
enabled content filtering, there are two blocks of fields which can
be filled in. The first block is for removing attachments of a
specific type. The second block is for removing all attachments
which are not of this type. One or the other of these blocks will
have had some information filled in -- by default, that is the latter
block.

If the latter block is filled in for you, then make sure that
text/html is included in this list. If the first block is filled
in, then make sure that text/html is *NOT* included.

Then, you need to make sure that the radio button for convert
text/html to text is turned off.

Then, you need to make sure that the radio button for convert
text/html to text is turned off.

But also note that if content filtering is on (filter_content = Yes),
then any multipart/alternative parts that contain for example a
text/plain sub-part followed by a text/html sub-part will ultimately
see only the text/plain part on the list even if both text/plain and
text/html are allowed. The only way to get the text/html sub-part to
the list in this case is to allow multipart/alternative and text/html
and NOT text/plain which is probably very bad as it would require
everyone to post in HTML.

Ways around this are to turn off content filtering completely or to
post HTML as HTML only and not multipart/alternative.

Quoting from the content filtering page: quote
After this initial filtering, any multipart attachments that are empty
are removed. If the outer message is left empty after this filtering,
then the whole message is discarded. Then, each multipart/alternative
section will be replaced by just the first alternative that is
non-empty after filtering./quote

Not sure if this will work with your version of Mailman, but see
http://www.python.org/cgi-bin/faqw-mm.py?req=showfile=faq03.032.htp.

You may also want to install an anti-spam processing system on

MTA, or you could try the alternative at

This was an old problem that was supposedly fixed in 2.1.4 - so it does
seem that you might not be running the latest Mailman.

Of course it could be a problem with the way that the Mailman 2.1.4 was
installed on the system. did you install it from source (and were all
the python packages you listed already loaded when you did the install -
in other words you didn't upgrade or install any of the python packages
after the Mailman install)?

Re: [Mailman-Users] PLEASE, help...

2004-03-06 Thread ricardo
Hi Jon,

Have the client delete all his cookies (or just the
cookies for the host running Mailman. Then restart the
browser and see if the problem goes away.

I tried that myself, still doesn't help.

This was an old problem that was supposedly fixed in 2.1.4
 - so it does seem that you might not be running the latest
 Mailman.

But that's strange. I installed (I think I upgraded) mailman to 2.1.4 from
a tarball I downloaded in late December.

Of course it could be a problem with the way that the
Mailman 2.1.4 was installed on the system. did you install
it from source (and were all the python packages you
listed already loaded when you did the install - in other
words you didn't upgrade or install any of the python
 packages after the Mailman install)?

I don't quite remember. Do you know where the bug was fixed, which module?
Is it possible to simply replace a particular module? I didn't want to
have to try and re-install mailman, I have a lot of lists running and
didn't want to risk messing with anything.

Is it possible to tell me which module(s) were affected in fixing this bug
so maybe I can take a look? Is there a patch for it?

thanks

[Mailman-Users] Please help me RTFM

2004-03-02 Thread Charles Gregory
Hallo!

I'm trying to setup and run the standard mailman included with
Red Hat Linux 9. This is an 'RPM' install, so I don't have the
source code files to read the 'README's. Supposedly, Mailman has an
easy to use web based interface/control panel? I would appreciate
it if someone could help provide a link to a simple 'howto' for setting up
the initial web interface on RH9/Postfix. Presumably once I've got *that*
running, the site-admin pages should be fairly straight-forward.

Please reply directly, I am not on any mailing list for mailman (yet).

Thanks.

[Mailman-Users] Please Help!

2004-02-20 Thread Mike Burns
I host websites with EhostPros.com. They use Mailman and something has broken on
their end (I assume) about three weeks ago. I run a soccer email list with about 500+
subscribers for a local soccer league. People started complaining that they were not
getting the messages I was posting. In fact, I wasn't getting the message that I was
posting. After going round and round with my webhost provider, the talked me into
deleting my virtual server and setting up a new one. I did so and after much testing
realized that the accounts able to post to the list but no receive from the list were
Yahoo.com address and Hotmail.com addresses, possibly more.

Has something changed that would disallow receiving mail with these web base email
providers? I checked and the spam blockers are not filtering the messages out, they
just are not arriving at all. As you can imagine this is a big problem as a large
majority of my members subscribe to these webmail services.

Any help for a semi-techy soccer player would really help!

Thanks

Write a small robot script to access the admin website and do the check
boxes for you. Linux has some very nice scripting tools that will help
you out (links and wget come to mind).

I've used them in the past to do load testing on web-sites. I setup
them up to walk entire web trees multiple times. The principle is the
same so with a bit of patience you should have something that will
hammer away on the admin pages for you in a few minutes.

If no one is willing to hold your hand on this, then you might want to
look through the archives of the list. This has been discussed in detail
over the years here. Some folks have gotten it to work - though the
automation part is totally up to you.

If nothing else, the archives will point out the folks that have worked
on this problem in the past, which should give you a touch-stone of
folks to email directly.

On a lark, I just did a quick search on the Courier-users list and found
a few nice threads from folks who installed Mailman with Courier and
have written some nice scripts to automate the list creations...
  http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=6037217

Enjoy.

[Mailman-Users] please help - big problems

2003-07-22 Thread Mandy Meinhoff

dear mailman-users,

i thought mailman is a real stable mailing-list software. though, i
switched all the lists of my users from majordomo to mailman caused of
security-reasons.

now, i do have 2 big problems:

1st - some mails (i do not really found out, wich ones, but i think they
are html-mails) of users with big lists seems to irritate mailman, so that
mailman don't send any mail, also the mails of the other lists are not
sent

2nd - two mailing lists crashed completely, when i try to access them via
web i get an error message. cron sends me this one:

raceback (most recent call last):
  File /mailman/cron/senddigests, line 65, in ?

self.Load()
File /mailman/Mailman/MailList.py, line 910, in Load
raise Errors.MMCorruptListDatabaseError, e
Mailman.Errors.MMCorruptListDatabaseError: bad marshal data

these lists also don't work, if i use config.db.last

3rd - sometimes just the approvement-messages aren't send.

i'm using mailman 2.0.13 on linux. DO ANYONE have any idea? could
upgrading to mailman 2.1.2 help? does anyone know another real stable,
safe and secure software?

please send your answer as cc to my email address. thanks.

Then create the 'master' mailing list called 'mailman' as instructed in the
INSTALL document in the release.

[Mailman-Users] Please Help Diagnose

2002-05-30 Thread Stephen J. Hyland

Here is the text of the failure message I get after MailMan gives up:

This message was created automatically by mail delivery software (Exim).

A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its
recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:

  pipe to |/usr/local/cpanel/3rdparty/mailman/mail/wrapper mailowner

I'm not administrating MailMan, I'm just setting up a mailing list on my
hosting company's server. Is the problem one of setting up the list or of
configuring MailMan in general.

Is anyone else seeing this problem? Is there a fix? I just got 27 copies of
the same farging message.

Gracias in advance for any insights.

2002-04-11 Thread ViroGen
Title: Please Help

I am using RH 7.2, mailman, and sendmail as my MTA. I can get to the mail list online and am able to signup. When I hit subscribe.. I never get an email. I see no errors in my mail log.. No entries at all from mailman in there either. Sendmail is working, I can send a message to myself.. I get no errors on the page when I try to subscribe. I have rebuilt the install several times, no luck. Check_perms came up with no problems...

[Mailman-Users] please help :)

2001-03-26 Thread Aleksandra Witkowska

Dear List Users/Admins,

I'm in a bit of a quandary as to how to solve a problem regarding a list
admin tool. I'm working for a non-for-profit technology community trying to
help a team build a user-friendly admin tool for signing up for our
community.

We're trying to make a tool that tracks people who sign up and gives them a
login as well as signs them up to a list or two (at their discretion of
course :)

Now, I am not a Unix-program, but I have administered Mailman lists through
the web-interface admin tools. I would like to know a few things if
possible.

First off, we're sending commands to the list via-e-mail when a person
registers, but we've run into a couple serious hitches.

1.)Is there were a way to set nomail at the same time as subscription in the
same e-mail? Or another way to do this? For example (in the e-mail body to
the list):
 subscribe myPassWd nomail

I know the body above _doesn't_ work :(, but I have some hope for a
variation, since there IS the "subscribe myPassWd digest" possibility, which
means that Mailman CAN set SOME options during subscription. Perhaps there
is some way the admin can customize the list that I am unaware of... if so,
how?

2.)Can a request email include ANY kind of notice to the list admin? Like a
"comments" line?
subscribe myPassWd
// set this person to nomail when approving

This way the admin goes in and sets the option if mailman can't.

I apologize if these are very basic questions, but I'm not a true list admin
(but a web programmer here :)

Thanks in advance for any light on this issue. If you can even point me to
some references/sources on this subject that would help too,

Aleksandra
