[Mailman-Users] Host name problem

2005-09-28 Thread Gregg Leslie
I've recently set up mailman under SuSE Linux 9.3. When I was testing the
new machine, I had its host name set to linux.reporterscommittee.org. Now
that it's ready (more or less) for prime time, I've changed the host name to
www.reporterscommittee.org. But all the lists still want to use the linux
address instead of the new www one.

When I log in to admin pages, for instance, I get redirected to the linux
address, and the page heading says linux.reporterscommittee.org Mailing
Lists.
And all the list information sent to subscribers includes the linux address.

I've confirmed that the word linux does not appear anywhere in the mm_cfg.py
file or the sysconfig/mailman file, and it doesn't seem to be a problem with
postfix (and all the other servers running), which works fine under the
renamed setup.

Am I missing something obvious? Or do I have to kill all the lists and start
over?

[Mailman-Users] Host name problem

2003-09-04 Thread George Booth
Mailman Version: 2.0.13
OS: Redhat Linux

Hi Mailman users,

Currently, we're migrating from Majordomo to Mailman, and have run into a host
name issue. The email server we use has one domain, while we use an aliasing
system for our email addresses; for instance, my alias is [EMAIL PROTECTED], but
this mail would be forwarded through our LDAP system to
[EMAIL PROTECTED], which is also the server our Mailman lists are on.
This causes a problem with list names and the admin email addresses for each
list. Changing the host name for each list to [EMAIL PROTECTED], which is how
our system needs to operate, causes the problem of having
[EMAIL PROTECTED] to appear, which needs to remain as
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

In order to get [EMAIL PROTECTED] to work, we would have to add, for
over 1000 lists, that alias into our routing system, from which our LDAP draws
information. That would be for listname-request, listname-admin,
listname-owner, etc. We would rather not have to go through that. It would be
much simpler if there were a way to modify the default message that Mailman
sends out when someome subscribers, when user password notifications go out
once a month, etc.

Is there, perhaps, a central location that I've not run across as yet to modify
these emails to provide for 2 different host names (one for the list address,
one for the administration addresses)?

I'll be happy to clarify any part of this that I may not have made clear. :)

Thanks,

George

found the problem, it was me.

I had DM (who I masquerade as (null for no masquerading) (see also

[Mailman-Users] Host name this list prefers

2002-06-01 Thread steven

Hi,

How do I get the field labelled Host name this list prefers on the
admin page mailing list administration
General Options Section to correctly handle a sub-domain (aka three
part machine name, e.g. foo.domain.com) so that mail sent from
adminstrative aliases comes from
[EMAIL PROTECTED] instead of [EMAIL PROTECTED] ?

right now, if I use a subdomain/3 part machine name for an existing
virtual host (which is listed in all the appropriate files to give the
virtual host full permissions in sendmail.cf) it defaults to the domain
of the server's real domain.

i.e. if I enter 'foo.virtdoman.dom' in the host name this list prefers
the emails incorrectly come 'From:'
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Yet if I use only 'virtdomain.dom' in the host name this list prefers
then the emails do come from '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' as I would
expect.

Is there a config I've missed to allow the from address to use a
sub-domain/3 part machine name in the From: field? Is it a bug? Is
it a feature?

Is there a particular item in a .py file I could edit to allow this?

tia,
~steven

Actually, make this change in /home/mailman/Mailman/mm_cfg.py

Specifically, set DEFAULT_HOST_NAME to the desired name... such as:

Hi Richard,
Thanks for the tip it works great!
When receiving mail from the lists, why does the To: header reflect the
real host name e.g. To: [EMAIL PROTECTED],
instead of To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Where lists is the hostname
i want to appear. Is it sendmail's masquerading option
or mailman's?

If you have change the value of DEFAULT_HOST_NAME in
$prefix/Mailman/mm_cfg.py then you will also need to add the following
line
to it AFTER the assignment redefining DEFAULT_HOST_NAME:
MAILMAN_OWNER = 'mailman-owner@%s' % DEFAULT_HOST_NAME
If you do not, then MAILMAN_OWNER will pick up the 'old' value of
DEFAULT_HOST_NAME from $prefix/Mailman/Defaults.py rather than the
'new'
value you have assigned in $prefix/Mailman/mm_cfg.py.

No! You should NOT edit Defaults.py. You will regret doing so when you come
to install an upgrade to Mailman.

If some variable (MAILMAN_OWNER for example) in Defaults.py is defined in
terms of some other variable (DEFAULT_HOST_NAME) in Defaults.py and you
redefine the other variable in mm_cfg.py then you should also redefine to
first variable in mm_cfg.py.

With the example variables, if you redefine DEFAULT_HOST_NAME in mm_cfg.py
then also redefine MAILMAN_OWNER in mm_cfg.py; in fact you can use the same
assignment for MAILMAN_OWNER in mm_cfg.py as is used in Defaults.py but it
will pick up the redefined DEFAULT_HOST_NAME from mm_cfg.py and hence end

Title: [Mailman-Users] host name

Actually I may have a little bit more of this answer. While I edited the files others mentioned above to get it so it gave my correct machine name, since I use virtual hosts for multiple domains on my machine I had to find a way to have them masquerade as if they belonged to that domain.

All I had to do was to put the domain the list was associated with in the web admin page at:
http://www.yourdomain.com/mailman/admin/listname

At the bottom of that page youll see:

??Host name this list prefers.
? Base URL for Mailman web interface.

So I just put the appropriate virtual domain in those fields and the lists have been giving out the correct information on all e-mail and web interfaces since then. All editing the files that were mentioned before did for me was to change whatever showed up in any new list before I edited it.

Hope this helps too.. Works for me :)

[Mailman-Users] Host name sent in email confirmation wrong

2001-11-28 Thread Bill Moseley

I have my lists all setup to use the full name of the host.

  DEFAULT_HOST_NAME   = 'mardy.hank.org'

This is the same host as simply hank.org. I just tried to subscribe to a
list, and the confirm mail came like this:

  Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The list settings have not changes (they still say mardy.hank.org).

The problem is I have all mail to @hank.org to one address in sendmail's
virtusertable, so it needs to go to mardy.hank.org to not get bypassed by
my virtusertable entry.

So, the question is, why did mailman set the reply to to simply @hank.org
instead of @mardy.hank.org? What settings should I look at?

So you changed it in your ~mailman/Mailman/mm_cfg.py file but did you go
into the web-admin and change it on the General Options page for the lists
that already exist?
Host name this list prefers: mardy.hank.org

Nope, that's what I meant when I said:

The list settings have not changes (they still say mardy.hank.org).

Should have been

The list's settings have not changes (they still say mardy.hank.org).

I assume the settings are in the .db file for each list:

 strings config.db | grep hank.org
http://hank.org/mailman/s
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
mardy.hank.org0

Hum.
