Re: [mailop] Recommendations for host with good IP reputation or use external SMTP?

2022-11-02 Thread Al Iverson via mailop
I mentioned this to Ian offline, but I'll mention it here, too. I
would be happy to try relaying for small hobbyist senders; feel free
to reach out if you're interested. (And if you asked before, but I
demurred because I wasn't ready, now I think I'm ready.) I've got my
own SMTP server handling 1:1 mail for my domains and some newsletter
and discussion mail, and I rarely have any deliverability issues. So,
relaying through a server like mine could help in a scenario like
this.

Cheers,
Al

I get so much spam from DO that I've blocked all of their ranges, with
no user complaints so far. I would not dream of putting a mail server there.

There are plenty of smaller places with a clue. I like Tektonix, small,
good customer services.

Oddly enough the first line of support person said that DO would be able do
that. However, that would require Vade getting in touch with the abuse
address. They suggested using a service like sendgrid and sent an article
from the Digitalocean site titled "Why you might not want to host an email
server."

After some further discussion there might be a workaround between the two
companies' supports so I'll give that a try today.

Thanks for the tip on SPFBL's service. I'll look that up.

I'm surprised and disappointed that Digital Ocean won't do anything to
vouch for "yes, this customer is using this IP, and has been for $TIME".

I'm new to this list, so is there a thread in the archives that might
discuss VPS hosts with clean IPs?

There are occasionally threads about small email servers. See the
recent "the oligarchy has won" thread and the recent T-Online / Orange
default block threads.

Is it better to use an external SMTP provider whose whole biz is
having clean IPs?

That depends, what do you consider to be "better"? Do you mean less of
your time / effort? Or do you mean fighting for the right to self host
email?

Aside: Check out SPFBL's allow list service. I spent the one-time $3
per IP to list my two VPSs. I consider the price low enough that it's
reasonable for me as an individual to be able to do. Read: It's within
my reach.

I don't like the idea of needing to pay, but I think it is a small
amount that demonstrates that I'm serious about trying to run a good
mail server. At least more so than those that won't pay.

I personally have good luck with IONOS hosting for $10/month.  When I
first started I had problems with AT&T but I was able to resolved and
since it's been quiet.

I see a lot of crap plus pop3/smtp/imap login attempts from Digital
Ocean for what it's worth.

I have my actual mail server at home and use the host instance as a
smart host to relay email in and out bound.

It appears you’ve come to the right place if you run a two user email server
and want to stick it to the man.
