See RFC 1123 section 5.2.1.  It is mandatory to resolve a CNAME in the
MAIL FROM and RCPT TO commands in the SMTP session, and it is fairly common
to resolve them in the addresses in the message header so they match what
is in the envelope.

Or to put it another way, if the domains in your mail are CNAMEs, don't be 
surprised
when they get de-CNAMEd.  That's not all that common but it is also not a bug.

FWIW, that's a normal Sendmail behavior.

It is arguably correct, given a pedantically narrow concept of what 
CNAME records are supposed to be for. Since the CNAME overrides any 
other record with the same label, it SHOULD be possible to canonicalize 
domains in all circumstances.


(Yes, I am quite aware of the edge cases.)
