RE: MI Open Workspace error

1999-08-25 Thread Peter Walsh

Don't workspace error messages include a line number, that tells you where
it failed? This means you can just count down the lines in the .wor file to
see which particular command it doesn't like.

Title: RE: MI Open Workspace error

Hi Drew,

A suggestion, do you have labels that are based on a expression?  If you do then these labels may be looking for a column name that no longer exists.  The easiest way to check would be to go into layer control and then check the layers where the labels are activated and then go and check the label options to see what expression is used to determine the labels.

You need to check the column called "ID".

I just finished HALF BUFFER that builds (on lines and plines only)
rectangular buffers on the chosen side (right or left depending on line

You had me worried for a moment until I saw that Oracle was involved. And
given that Oracle's 8i is essentially cleaning the internet table for data tied
to the recent availability of interMedia (images, video, audio, and point
geography), I would not worry too much.

Did you know that you can essentially dump your TAB file sets into Oracle 8i?
Its true! Get Oracle 8i Workstation (one standalone seat) for $395 and get ALL
the goodies. including the Spatial Cartridge. And if you are really on a
budget you can get needed DEMO CDs for $5/CD. And keep an eye on Oracle for
other news around end of this month. You might be surprised.

Alan and Sarah,

There's a mapbasic developped by Jacques Paris that will do just that. You
may
have to change the line direction of some of your objects in order to draw
the half
buffer on the right side, since the application will ask you if you want the
half
buffer on the right or left side of the polyline. Mind you, there's a
mapbasic that
will allow you to do that to!

PRESS ANNOUNCEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OPEN TECHNOLOGY FOR A "SPATIALLY ENABLED WEB" ANNOUNCED

Wayland, MA, USA, August 18, 1999: Maps and map queries will become a much
more important part of the Web thanks to two key interoperability standards
passed by members of the Open GIS Consortium (OGC) on August 13 in
Southampton, England. The standards will make it much easier for
businesses, citizens, and governments to find, view, pan, zoom, overlay,
and query geographic image data and map data on the Worldwide Web.

The new OpenGIS Grid Coverages Specification and OpenGIS Distributed
Catalog Services Specification, combined with the already available OpenGIS
Simple Features Specification and technology from OGC's Web Mapping
Testbed, provide the means for unprecedented interoperability between
systems that use geospatial data. In OGC, "Grid Coverages" refers to
satellite images, digital aerial photos, digital elevation data, and other
kinds of data represented in a grid cell or "raster" coordinate system.
"Simple Features" refers to "vector" geodata, digital map information
represented in polygons and lines. "Catalog Services" refers to a common
architecture for online automated directories of geodata and geoprocessing
services, rather like "spatial search engines."

Cadcorp (UK), ESRI (US), Intergraph (US), Laser-Scan (UK), Oracle (US), and
PCI Geomatics (Canada) made up the team that submitted the OpenGIS Grid
Coverages Implementation Specification in response to an OGC Request for
Technology (RFT). PCI Geomatics took the lead in this effort. A grid
coverage interface provides basic image access capability for purposes of
viewing a grid coverage and performing certain kinds of analysis, such as
histogram calculation, image covariance and other statistical measurements.
(Interoperability for a wider range of image operations awaits the OpenGIS
Image Exploitation Services Specification, which is in progress in OGC's
Technical Committee.) The specification supports the GeoTIFF file format,
various color models, variable value sequencing and pixel ordering, and all
standard grid geometries and spatial referencing systems (consistent with
geometries and spatial referencing in the OpenGIS Simple Features
Specification).

In Southampton, Cadcorp was applauded for its demonstration of a client
application panning, zooming, and querying grid coverage data on multiple
vendors' servers through interfaces on the client and servers which conform
to the new OpenGIS Grid Coverages Specification.

Bob Moses, President of PCI Geomatics, said, "The simple maps and Earth
images you've seen on the web up until now don't really show what's ahead.
Geospatial technologies are so specialized and hard to integrate that they
haven't been part of most peoples' information environment. Now that's
going to change. We are adding 'where' to the kinds of questions the web
can answer."

The OpenGIS Distributed Catalog Services Implementation Specification
specifies standard interfaces for online geospatial resource discovery and
access services. Submitters of this specification included: Blue Angel
Technologies (US), ESRI (US), Geomatics Canada (Canada Centre for Remote
Sensing (CCRS)), Intergraph (US), Marconi Integrated Systems (UK), MITRE
(US), Oracle (US), U.S. Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC), U.S.
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and U.S. National
Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA). Other contributors included: Compusult
Limited (Canada), GEODAN IT bv (Netherlands), HJW (US), Joint Research
Centre - European Commi

MI SUM: MapBasic Communicating over Windows Network

1999-08-25 Thread Bill Thoen

About a month ago I asked for advice on how to communicate over a
Windows network to feed data to a mapbasic application. Thanks to
MapInfo tech support, Antoine Gilbert, Robert Crossley, Trey
Pattillo, John Brosowsky, Christian Singer, William Forde, Mike
Saunt, Dmitry Bogdanov, and Sam Kome, I have some useful
suggestions for others who may travel this path.

There are several approaches. I'll first cover the bad ones so
you don't waste your time on them. Then I'll touch on the better
ones; some I admit I don't fully understand, but I'll present
them as best I can. For my app, I chose to use VB to drive
MapBasic via DDE and the VB app communicated between multiple
running network applications using the Win95 Winsock API with UDP
calls.

First, here's the bad ideas: MapInfo tech support suggested
Network DDE, but only as a maybe, since no one there had any
direct experience with this situation. (This problem really does
go beyond MapBasic's scope, y'know) The consensus of others who
actually use MapInfo for hard applications was to avoid Network
DDE. It's an old idea that has now fallen out of favor at
Microsoft. "Here be dragons", in other words.

Next I thought I could have my application read an Access
database that was being concurrently populated by the other
programs running on the Windows network. This was also thought to
be a bad idea. Trey Pattillo, having been there and done that,
said so in ALL CAPS!!! Robert Crossley also thought this was a
bad idea opting instead for Oracle's "trigger" mechanism to drive
events. This isn't the first time I've heard that MapInfo gets
poor marks on the "works and plays well with others" score from
programmers, and the archives here are full of it.
MapBasic/MapInfo tends to burn people badly who try to apply it
to multi-user database access applications and don't understand
its limitations. (and the MapBasic docs are NOT helpful here!)

The general opinion among those vets who have been there is that
MapInfo behaves poorly in multi-user database access situations.
The claim is that if it edits a single record, it locks the table
so that other applications cannot edit *any* record in the
affected table. (However, I have found that when MapInfo commits
these edits, or if it is simply reading without making edits,
then the table is unlocked, allowing others to edit the table.)
Although this implies that there may be a solution for a
workaround, I think it's fair to say that if you plan to use
MapInfo in a mutli-user database access environment, there are
alligators in these waters lurking beneath the surface like
little patches of bad-assed water. I'll be touching on the
multi-user access problem in my next summary... There is hope;
stay tuned!

Now for the better ideas. They all involve using more robust
software than MapBasic (VB, Delphi or C++) and pumping data into
MapInfo via integrated mapping (OLE) or DDE.

Christian Singer suggested that one could use "named pipes" on NT
systems. He says, "This mechanism is part of the WinNT API (does
also work with UNIX systems) and are somewhat easier to implement
than TCP/IP sockets. Win95 support is limited to the client side
functionality. To make use of named pipes you would have to write
a DLL or EXE module (preferably in C/C++) that is run
concurrently with MI and communicates with your MB app the usual
way ("integrated mapping"). Related Win32 API calls are:
CallNamedPipe() / CreateNamedPipe() / TransactNamedPipe() /
WaitNamedPipe()."

Dmitry Bogdanov also suggested a "pipe" approach. In his words,
"Service and client communicate via pipe - read MSDN or VC++ 5.0
help to learn how to create pipes and monitor them, and how to
create services..."

William Forde's second opinion was that DCOM was an alternative
choice to socket services, and that the client using this method
could then send info to MapInfo via DDE. (this went a bit over my
head, as I am still a bit of a knowlessman on the subject of
DCOM.)

Mike Saunt threw out the idea of using OLE automation. MapInfo
can receive OLE messages via the RemoteMsgHandler( ) function so
if each MI client registers itself with some controlling
application (not a Mapbasic one, I assume) then they can
communicate that way. Sam Kome also suggested this route. He
adds, "...you can have two way communication with an MBX by
setting up a bogus MB menu item that calls an OLE subroutine (a
public class in say a VB app). Run the menu command when you want
to send the other app a message (like, "look in gfLatitude").
Then use RemoteMsgHandler/CommandInfo to intercept messages from
the other app. It's almost like event driven programming."

In the end I took the route suggested by John Brosowsky and
William Forde, because it was simple, and totally in sync with
the current worldwide (and non-Microsoft) rage. That is, to use
TCP/IP services via the Winsock API available in Windows 95. In
fact, since my need is even simpler, I could use UDP protocol.
This is fast, simple and well-supp

You likely face the issue of setting parameters within the receiver itself.
Therefore you will need to get a hold of the "manual" of these control and
response strings. Uploading data for way point or other issues you very likely
will need to use their software.

As to the post processing of the Garmin data be cautious in your assumption.
This is neither simple nor direct generally and if I have my facts right, the
model of receiver does not have the capability to output the needed "raw" data
necessary. The necessary raw data to enable post processing requires a verbose
mode to gain access to the pusedo-range strings. As the data is verbose, it
will quickly fill available RAM space on the receiver itself. The only way
around this is to log the data in real-time to another device. This is the
rule rather than the exception.

When , receiver is capable of providing the raw pusedorange the output it is
typically binary and there for you'll need translation from a proprietary
format to a open format like RINEX. RINEX is the open methodology for
differential post processing.

Once you create the post-processed NMEA strings then the Blue Marble software
included with your Professional should be able to import.

Or you might want to consider contacting Red Hen Systems and use either FarmGPS
and/or EzDIFF. (970)-493-3952.

MI Labels

1999-08-25 Thread jane . toon

Could anyone point me in the right direction.

I am trying to write some mapbasic code to label points. These points make up
many
seismic lines and i would like to be able to find a way of labeling only every
10th, 50th
or 100th point and also rotating all the labels so that they are at 90 degrees
to the angle
of the line.

I have tried to do this using the CreateText command but the labels appear very
messy
and not well positioned to the points even after playing around with the anchor
and offset
values. This is also very slow as i have large numbers of points to label.

I would prefer to use automatic labeling as this is much neater and quicker, but
i can't see
how to sample the labeling to defined intervals or how to rotate labels
depending on the
varying angles of each line of points.

Thanks in advance for any help and apologies if i've missed the obvious !!

Subject: MI Buffers

Hello fellow listers,
Could anyone tell me if it is at all possible to set a buffer so that it
only extends out from one side of a polyline. I am trying to set buffers of
varying sizes along watercourses. The buffer distances I am setting are
different on opposite sides of the watercourse hence the desire to be able
to set different distances.
Can it be done ???

MI New cool internet mapping site !

1999-08-25 Thread Dany Bouchard

Dear fellow mappers,
We have just completed an interesting internet
mapping application for Canada, including national topographic database at 1: 50
000 and 1: 250 000 for all major urban areas in the country (over 10 GB of
data!). The site is the Directory of
Federal Real Property of the Treasury Board of Canada, which includes
mapping of all owned and leased properties in Canada. You are welcomed to visit this site at: http://www.tbs-sct.gc.ca/dfrp/
Select the Map menu and click on

RE: MI MakeFontSymbol

1999-08-25 Thread Sue Port

Hi David,

We had the same problem here at one stage where all the MapInfo fonts changed
to black squares. I'm not really sure why it happens, but one of the causes
was not rebooting the PC after installing MapInfo. However if this isn't the
case, you can fix it by re-installing the fonts through the Windows control
panel or by just re-installing MapInfo.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Sue.

RE: Access and MI

1999-08-25 Thread Eric Maranne

I built an application 'squeletton" that let's you open MI windows in
ACCESS. An Access table is used to define MI table description (location,
nickname, index field name) and its link to Access (table name, related
index, form to open on request, etc). With this, you can select a record in
an access form and pop up an MI window zoomed on the corresponding selected
object; or, all the way round, select an object (or a collection of objects
in MI) and pop up an access form with related records. It's possible to
record MI selections into Access, etc ...

It's quite straightforward, and I didn't plan to sell it; on the other hand
I do not have the time to produce a suitable documentation to post it on
the list' FTP site. Depending on your skills in ACCESS, I can post it to
you (it's worthless if you can't do any VBA dev), in exchange, I'd ask you
to write the adequate english doc ... Is it an interesting deal (well of
course, if someone is making a few billion $ out of it ... please drop me
one or two..) ?

Objet: Access and MI

Hi Everyone,

A request for help with external databases. The problem I have is that I
have an external database in Access which I would like to be able to
associate with a mappable MI table. I can update the area column in the
external database with information from my table in MI, however what I
would
really like to be able to do is to select a record in the external database
table and be able to find the selection in the Mappable table. Ie. how you
select a record in a browser and can then find the region etc it refers to
in the map window.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

cheers
Jacqueline.

RE: Deleting replicate data points in MI 5.0 table

1999-08-25 Thread Sue Port

Hi Tim,

One way to get rid of your duplicate points would be to do a SQL with a "group
by" and re-generate the points through the "Create Points" command.

1. Do the following SQL statement:

Select {Tag},Format$(CentroidX(obj),"#.") "X",
Format$(CentroidY(obj),"#.")"Y"
>From {Table} Group By {Tag} Into NEWTABLE

where {Tag} is the unique column name and {Table} is the table name.
The format$() function is needed to stop rounding errors.

2. Do a "Save Copy As" for the NEWTABLE table.

3. Close the NEWTABLE selection table.

4. Open the newly created NEWTABLE table.

5. Use the "Create Points" command to generate new points from the X & Y columns.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Sue.
