Re: Coordinate precision problems MI5.5

1999-11-24 Thread Mark_Pollard

Hi Steve

The reason that these cannot be accessed is that the data was originally
generated at the definition of 6 decimal places, so the data stored in the
tables is only to the accuracy of the original inputted data. The bounds
statement is only good if you want to add new data to the table, allowing a
greater accuracy or if you need to make changes to the data set, only these
new elements or the effected elements will use all 8 decimal places.

hope this helps

cheers

Please note the 7 decimal places on the Long (X) and 8 decimal places on
the Lat

148.982 , -35.4421 , 148.98170700 , -35.44214200

The value in the last column {Decimal (14,8)} was generated using the

Update TabName Set col4 = objectgeography(obj,2)
Please note that the last 2 numbers in the MID have been set to zero or 178

It would appear that despite the fact that the original layer was bounded

Using [F7] on the selected object does give the correct number of

MI MAPX: Need to display feature collection FAST

1999-11-24 Thread Ian Johnson

Dear MapX gurus

I have a (major) speed problem using MapX version 4 and hope that
someone can give me the solution that seems to be hiding from me!

I am trying to convert a mapping application from MapInfo Pro (used as an
OLE automation object) to MapX. The core of the application involves
making a series of SQL selections from a number of open MapInfo tables
(which are quite large - potentially hundreds of thousands of records -
and are not themselves displayed), and displaying the selectons as a
series of layers on a map. The selection criteria may be updated quite
frequently (perhaps every few minutes, perhaps several times with a few
seconds between each update) and the map redrawn. Speed is obviously of
the essence.

Using MapInfo Pro, I simply add the queries as layers to the map and they
plot almost instantaneously - the whole process of querying and replotting
the map takes at most a few seconds.

In MapX I use Search to create a features collection, create a new map
layer, and then add the features collection to the map layer (code below).
My couple of seconds has now turned into several minutes (with about 8000
objects in the selection) and that's just for one miserable points layer
-- there could be 10 or 20 layers, including complex line and area
features. The speed is -- perhaps unsurprisingly -- reminiscent of the
speed of creation of objects in MapBasic.

Although there are a couple of tweeks I can apply, such as using
BeginAccess/EndAccess, I am not anticipating that this is going to solve
the problem. What I really need is a substantially different way of doing
things.

So, can anyone help with a way of displaying a selection or feature
collection as a new map layer without having to insert the objects into a
new layer. Thematic mapping with non-selected objects rendered invisible
is not really an option, because one could be waiting minutes while all
the invisible objects draw.

I hope there IS a solution ... Help!

Ian Johnson

function DoLocalSQLselect(WhereClause :String;
  Var tmLayer:LayerInfoRecType;
  GeneratedLayerName :String): Integer;

{ DoSQLSelect: Runs an SQL selection to create a collection of features
   and add the collection to a new layer}

Var i:integer; unusedParam: OleVariant;
 ds, ftrs, Lyr, NewLayer: Variant;

Begin
TVarData(unusedParam).vType := varError;
TVarData(unusedParam).vError := DISP_E_PARAMNOTFOUND;

{Select features from a table in the overview map}
  lyr := OverviewMap.Layers.item(tmLayer.SourceDatasetTable);
  {Make the MapInfo table fields accessible to search}
  ds := OverviewMap.Datasets.Add(midatasetlayer, Lyr, unusedParam,
 unusedParam,unusedParam, Lyr.Name,unusedParam,unusedParam);
  ftrs:=OverviewMap.Layers.
 Item(tmLayer.SourceDatasetTable).Search(WhereClause);

{Create a new map layer as layer 1 on the main map}
NewLayer:=MainMap.Layers.CreateLayer
   (GeneratedLayerName,'',1,unusedParam,unusedParam);

{Insert selected features into new layer}
(** THIS NEXT STATEMENT TAKES _FOREVER_ ***)
For i:=1 to ftrs.count do Newlayer.AddFeature(ftrs.item[i]);

End { DoLocalSQLselect };

MI VM Slope Analysis

1999-11-24 Thread p . graham . mky

A question to all you Vertical Mapper experts.
When performing a slope analysis it would appear that VM calculates slope
(degrees or percent, it doesn't matter) by dividing vertical displacement by
slope distance.
Whereas, in Australia we calculate slope by dividing vertical displacement
by horizontal distance.
Is this normal or is VM incorrectly calculating slope?

RE: MI-OS projection & creating points

MapInfo can handle national grid easting/Northing coordinates without
converting to latitude/longitude. When you use the "Create Points" function,
simply choose "Projection", then "British Coordinate Systems" and "British
National Grid". This coordinate system is already set-up to work in metres.

Your problem may be getting your data into 2 neat metre based Easting and
Northing columns.

> Column A
> 5205 7171
> 5214 7170
> 5204 7161
> etc...

Is there just this one column of coordinate data? Is there another with a
two letter code (like "TQ" for the London area)? If this field is all there
is then I would assume they are expressed to 100m resolution and need to be
multiplied up to convert to metres.

If you can described your coordinate data fully, I'd be happy to guide you
through the coordinate preparation and create points process.

RE: MI Integrated mapping with Delphi

1999-11-24 Thread Trey Pattillo

If you go to my website www.wap3.com and then to the downloads area you can
get the source code and examples for using D4 and MapInfo. This is all
based on MI v4.x, can't afford the upgrades.
===
"Creating and Calling Delphi DLL's"

This is the full source for Delphi 4 [may work in 3] to create a DLL
Includes an example MB showing how to call DLLs.

CONCEPTS
1) passing strings and numbers in functions and procedures
2) "modal" dialogs [having D4 create a "input dialog"] [MB goes to sleep]
3) "modeless" dialogs which is a "form"
The example uses a memo box with OK & Cancel buttons.
There should be enough info to really get you going with Delphi.

=

"Integrated Callback" Delphi 4 and Visual Basic 5

These are example programs [with source code] on how to do "call backs"
using Delphi 4 and VisualBasic 5. There is a file named "_HowTo.txt" that
explains the steps required to build the call back from scratch. You can do
it the hard way or modify the source code, which ever you're more inclined
to do.
VB5 is a snap, 3 lines of code.
D4 was a bit more difficult, after 7 weeks of surfin' and reworkin' I
finally gave birth to this puppy! FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS ! ! !
This is modified from D3 so it should be fully compatible, except that the
menu names etc. are a little different and located in different places.
Don't ask for help on D3 I missed D2 & D3 upgrades.

===

"OLE Automation for Delphi 4"

This zip contains full source for use Delphi as an OLE Automation Server. I
created from a request on the MapInfo-L Mailing List and to show how to
accomplish this method. The last examples I had, MI4.5, said to use a
"picture box" which is not correct, at least for Delphi.

Hope this helps..drop an email if I can be of help [when I have time]

MI-OS projection & creating points

1999-11-24 Thread Map Library

Hello Everyone!!
I have a database of points (1000's of them!) with a column defining
geographic location using Ordnance Survey Grid References. Here's an
example:

Column A
5205 7171
5214 7170
5204 7161
etc...

I would like to use MI's create points function on this dataset but it
seems to me that x,y coordinates are required using degrees (lat/long).
The dataset
that these points will be overlaid with will hopefully be the OS-Panorama
data (I'm still waiting for a price quote!!!) and I am also hoping that
the
projections will correspond!!! Is there possibly a Mapbasic utility that
will batch process the OS grid reference into lat/long? I'll take other
suggestions too. Before we have some poor student input this data (175
pages) we would like to know if it will be possible to create points.

Thanks for your wise council.
Sharon

MI RE: Getting Co-ordinates

1999-11-24 Thread Crompton, Mark

Hi Paul,

Check out MapBasic Help for SEARCHINFO. They have a sample there that
clicks on a point and gets Lat/Long [CommandInfo()]. When the user selects
the tool on the dialog, you need to close the dialog down. When the
selection is made, bring the dialog back and re-populate it with the same
data that was there before it was closed (i.e. remember what was there).

Hope that this helps,

Dear all,

Using MapBasic I have created an application for adding/editing/deleting map
data. For adding and editing data I have provided a dialog which prompts the
user for the relevant table information including a co-ordinate set (X,Y).
If the user doesn't know the exact location, then I have been asked to
provide a button which the user can click, and take them to the map window
containing the table, and extract the co-ordinates from the map.

So far the button in my dialog is defined as having a handler routine which
it calls. Its in this routine where I have already been able to determine
the MapWindowID for the first instance of the table, and set it as the front
window.

Can you please advise me how I might achieve the rest of the above?. How do
I switch back to the map window, recognise a mouse click on the map, and
then refer back to my dialog?.

Re: MI What was the name of the Lotus demographics product that flopped?

1999-11-24 Thread Joshua Ostroff

I believe it was MarketPlace. They folded the consumer version in the
midst of that uproar, but kept the business version (MarketPlace Business),
which is now marketed by iMarket.Inc and provides about 11 million US
business sites in a Dun & Bradstreet file, which can be selected by various
criteria such as industry, size, etc. on a per-record basis. Or you can
just aggregate data - for example, Pizza Parlors by ZIP - and export that
data for free. MPB costs about $500/year for quarterly updates, with a lot
of enhancements available at extra costs. Hope this helps

MI Looking for European city points

1999-11-24 Thread john . vitiello

Can anyone direct me to a source for cheap/free city points for Europe? I have
the European capitols that were included with Mapinfo 4.1 but I need the top 200
or so cities(by population) for Western Europe. Accuracy/supplementary data are
relativly unimportant. The same for Asia would also help down the road.

Thanks,
John Vitiello

MI Use of Text Files in GIS and Cartography

1999-11-24 Thread Ted Florence

Please excuse cross-posting of this message.

I am looking for information regarding the use of geo-text files in GIS
and cartography. What I mean by a geo-text file is either a
comma-delimted or spreadsheet file that contains a series of X,Y
co-ordinates along with a series of attributes (or none at all) for the
purpose of plotting points at the locations specified by the X,Y
co-ordinates. For example, a file might have a series of X's and Y's
representing specific locations of stores or other physical landmarks.
What we are hoping to do, is create a filter for MAPublisher that will
import one of these files and create points in Illustrator and FreeHand
along with an attribute table comprised of the attributes in the
original text or spreadsheet file. These files could presumably come
from a GPS collection process or simply a spreadsheet file containing
the required columns.
What we are after, is an indication from users as to where these files
typically come from and in what format they typically are kept so that
we may investigate and create a suitable MAPublisher tool.

If anyone can shed some light on this for us it would be much
appreciated.

Thank you and regards.

Hi all

Does anyone have any sources other than Mapinfo for Australian street and
census data? I am compiling a list of sources and need more than one option.
Will post with results.

Thanks,

MI Thinking SpatialWare

1999-11-24 Thread Mike C Kallas

To anyone that is a MI SpatialWare expert - Looking for some help.

This is what I want to do -
I have approx. 5000 Central Office points that are my targeted CO's for
xDSL build.
I also have a Dunn & Bradstreet file, Customer File, and a WireCenter
boundary file.

Using the Dunn & Bradstreet file and the Customer file individually, I
need to find the distance of each of the businesses from D&B and each
Customer from the corresponding Central Office. These files are point
files.
Looking at the D&B points, I need to capture the just the D&B
(businesses) within the associated wirecenter.
I'm working off the CLLI (WC_Code) from the CO and WireCenter files.
My result would give me a CLLI or WC_CODE, appropriate CO, D&B Name, and
distance in Feet (with option for meters) then, do the same thing for
the Customer data.
This was I will have a large result set for Businesses and Customers and
I could query this data to find distances.
For instance, Select * from Business data where distance is less than
12,000 ft. (meters)
I would have one Central Office (CO) point per Wirecenter boundary.

Yes, I am new to the SpatialWare side of things, but willing to SQL.
Thanks

Re: MI free image viewer

1999-11-24 Thread Andy

Try using LinkPlus.mbx from SpatialPlus, and use your web browser or a small
image viewer (IView32.exe is my favourite) to view images.

Re: MI Populating an object's column with the Easting and Northing value s of the object

1999-11-24 Thread bryan_d

I'm sure this works instead and is simpler (I just checked it was OK on my
machine with MI4.5)

Bring up the map basic window (or in your application). Type the command
"set coordsys table  "
where table name is an open table in Brit. Nat. Grid.
centroid(x) and centroid(y) should now work

Re: MI free image viewer

1999-11-24 Thread Gareth Hardman

Karl,

There was a particularly good example of this kind of app brought to the
attention of mapInfo-l a while ago (May 1999??).

If you contact Ahmet DABANLI, Environmental Engineer, GIS Specialist,
Ankara / Turkiye (E-mail : [EMAIL PROTECTED], web
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Gird/4434) he will probably be able
to help you out.

This app enables you to link any of your documents, multimedia, or programs
to any object in the table.

Its pretty good!
